Many, many years ago, my grandmother declared at Thanksgiving that "Nixon didn't do anything wrong, he was framed" and when I challenged this assertion, I was banished to the children's table until she died.

Take your annual vacation over Thanksgiving, like me and my wife. Problem solved.

So, mission accomplished?

I avoid most all family squabbles by being 5,000 miles from most family on the holidays.

/it is remarkably effective

Growing up with divorced parents, the holidays were always a hassle of keeping score on which parent I went with for Thanksgiving v Christmas, and that continued briefly after I left home.

Then one year in my twenties I realized there was no penalty for answering the question "who are you going to see at [holiday]?" with "neither" and I've never looked back.

Thanksgiving? We either rent a cabin in the woods and cook the full spread in a camp kitchen, or we do a spread at home. In both cases we invite friends who don't otherwise have family in the area and we have a fantastic time that celebrates the holiday.

Christmas? Spend at home together with the family I chose to build.

If any political arguments ensue at either of these, it's commiserating on the state of the world today.

If we do any travel at all, it's between those two holidays. And to be honest both of my parents seem relieved at this, because any visit we make is outside of the peak stress points of the holiday season.

Ignore it, just like you do with the Pol tab.

I guess I'm fortunate that none of my immediate family are stupid sputttering right wing Fox News bots.

Just ask questions.

When you hear, "Trump is gonna build the wall" you ask, "Is it done yet?"

When you hear, "Trump is gonna repeal Obamacare" you ask, "What will you do for health care then Mom?"

When you hear, "I'm so tired of having to defend all this Russian BS" you ask, "Is it taking all your time?"

When you hear, "I'm glad Trump is reversing O'bummer's land grabs " you ask, "Is that where the new coal mines are going?"

Etc. You can do that all day but you're not arguing, just asking questison.

I moved from IL to SD this year. My Illinois buddy is coming here for Thanksgiving, partly to entertain his wife but I think more so to escape another holiday with his 24/7 FOXNews swallowing parents.

I'd be happy if far and farkers could avoid turning every tab and every thread into the Politics tab at this point.

OR: just have an intimate Thanksgiving with your significant other(and kids only if applicable). You already get along (probably).
Plus when you get all drunky, your bed is just over there.

I just start pointing and hooting as loudly as possible whenever someone expresses an opinion I don't 100% agree with. I give it a good two minutes to really send the point home.  Works like a charm too, I haven't been invited to family get-togethers or even dinner with friends in years!

In SD? I moved here from Ohio and the derp that I've heard from some people in this state makes my head hurt. Arguing with my fiancé's parents about Trump was especially disheartening. Rapid doesn't seem as bad as Pierre, though.

This'll be the first Turkey day we do as just the immediate family this year, and not even all of us (eldest moved to Ken-farking-tucky last month).  Looking forward to it!

I'm more concerned with non-political fark threads turning into the politics tab.
