He was pretty educated for a conservative and could write very well, but other than that, he was a butt sucking dickweed.

Buckley, an intellectual without empathy, his compassion, that of a vivisectionist, the frozen phallus of the patriarchy, I wager he was a great lay.

/I lose the bet, but he's gotten better since his demise, no question*.

Really?  Because I seem to remember Buckley said the same thing to Chomsky in their famous televised debate.

Oh absolutely yes.  But he was a Conservative who used big words, and was therefore regarded as a hero.
When Conservatives ran out of big words, they turned to Ann Coulter.

I've found this rather generous when applied to him. Buckley certainly *sounded* like one, though.

Buckley was a humorless AssHole. His idea of a joke was to make it as bad as possible and then get off on how awkward everyone was upon hearing the joke.

WFB's smile was horrible.  When it happened you could practically smell the sulfur and hear the cries of the damned.

Based on his speech patterns and mannerisms, I'd say Buckley was the proto-Thurston Howell.

Buckley is the only person the Simpsons don't need to parody. The pretentious accent, the smug pompous manner, the consciously flamboyant vocabulary, the hissing contempt, the leaning ever further and further to the right in his chair. The very last word in self-parody. I never found him anything but dull, or unintentionally funny. Mostly dull.

He and Grumps are two sides of the same coin.

Buckley's smile says it all. It is the very definition of the pseudo-aristocratic,
"I don't give a good goddamn about you, your opinion, or your pathetic little lives. I was born rich and entitled and my entire reason d'etre is to stay that way, or at least appear to."

Marx was tough as nails, smart as a whip, had been through every conceivable social situation, and had zero patience for fools. He had the perfect devastating retort for every occasion.

I'm glad I never met him. Scanty Em is...fragile, he's very fragile.

Sure, Groucho was famously with, but he was really smart, too. Self-educated. Just a very intelligent man.

Groucho could be a real prick too.  I think he could take it.

2017-11-06 08:42:17 AM
My father placed great importance on vocabulary, grammar and oral communications when I was growing up. So, naturally, he had pointed me to WFB. For a young, white boy of upper middle class means, it was pretty natural. I loved how he used words to put people down and made himself look better than everyone simply by being in total command of the conversation.

Than I grew up and saw, for myself, just what a complete asshole he was. That and the whole conservative movement. This was the time of the Contract for America, the Monica thing... all of that sh*t.

In comparison to today's Alt-Right "Conservatives", sure WFB can seem like a wiser old Grandpa. But, he was always a rakish dickbag.

His word of the day is: Pedant.

Yeah, and a shiatty novelist, iirc, unless I've got the wrong Buckley.

OneFretAway: Groucho could be a real prick too.  I think he could take it.

He was acerbic. From what I've seen, he was aware of some things in his later years.

1. He was far more entertaining than anyone who would interview him.
2. He knew far better what people wanted to hear than any interviewer.
3. He was old, and didn't do interviews for fun, or to stroke his ego. It was work, he had a job to do, and he was a perfectionist.

As a result, the vibe he gave in any interview was, "You've introduced me, now shut the f*ck up and let me talk. Respond with monosyllables when I cue you. Otherwise, butt out until I'm through."

This was not vanity or ego. He was absolutely correct. Blunt but correct.

When Dick Cavett interviewed him, he told the audience to stop applauding, "You're just wasting time when I could be talking."

God I love that man.

Those Blackford Oates novels were probably some of the worst trash ever written.

This is the place where I always ask: Who is the Buckley of today? Who are the conservative intellectuals of today?

I usually get shiat as the answer. shiat or Krauthammer, not necessarily in that order.

I wonder about that too, and the answer is that I don't think there are any.  The closest public intellectuals are probably Krauthammer and Bannon, if you can believe that, and Bannon is a gross old racist rumpot, more Barnum than brains.

The right is almost completely bereft of intellectualism.  I know of a few in academia, and their conservatism is tied to their very narrow fields of thought and research and doesn't translate to the bigger picture.  Mostly Economists.

Rakish dickbags were in style from the 1940s-1970s. They replaced, and were in turn replaced by, earthy dickbags.

The latter, I believe.  I'm sure people were quaking when he threatened them in that Mid Atlantic nonsense.
