Like so many great Australian rockers, the Young brothers are Scottish immigrants. But they are very much celebrated still in Australia, particularly their early albums with Bon Scott at the helm. The world knows Highway To Hell from that era, but to this day it's It's A Long Way To The Top (When you Wanna Rock'n'Roll) which is our de facto national anthem down here. And of course we know Back in Black and Thunderstruck but they're just not as good as the early stuff, even if they outsold the early stuff by twenty to one around the globe.

The role of George Young was directly critical to many great Aussie bands you won't have heard of and he indirectly inspired many more and it's certainly a big loss, even if he hadn't been up to much in recent years.

You evil, evil person.  I laughed.

Have you seen Stevie Wonder's new album cover?  Neither has he!

Ouch! Frenzal Rhomb wrote a sort of tribute to Malcolm Young a decade ago, pre-dementia, it's my favourite Frenzals song. Their song is a brief and loud discussion about how weird a life it would be to have played in ACDC and written Highway to Hell but to be almost unrecognisable in public because everyone is so focused on your younger brother's guitar skills and stagecraft.

Flash and the Pan is one of my favorite groups of all time. When I divorced, we fought over who would get custody of their albums.  Dark, apocalyptic, and brilliant songwriting.

The cover of "Lights in the Night" (the original LP version -- it doesn't come through on the CD) was one of the best album covers of all time.

Well, Australia lost the Easybeats guy, but they still have Tame Impala and King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard.

It's like losing your Ferrari and getting two Ferraris as an insurance replacement.

Nicer stuff. Youtube "Rattlesnake", "Robot Stop" and "Gamma Knife" for maximum Psychedelia.

As an Easybeats fan, I can safely say that Australia knows their psychedelia.

Yep. All the early stuff was the best, and I doubt they'd ever made it like they did without George's mentoring

I have tried listening to Tame Impala and just can't get into it. I did love the Hoodoo Gurus, however.

Hoodoo Gurus are great. Heck, Midnight Oil in the 80's was great.

As far as Tame Impala, I prefer their earlier sound (Innerspeaker), although all their albums are quite nice. I always loved the song "Lucidity", a nice Yes meets Nazz kinda sound. King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard I think are currently the best band out of Australia and I've yet to hear an album from them that didn't rock my face off.

Couldn't be bothered linking, but Richard Thompson does a great cover of that in his "1000 years of popular music"

My SO is Aussie, so we caught the Oils in August. Played like 6 tunes from 10,9,8, and generally kicked major ass, excepting PG's expected antics. Living End supported and killed as usual. Street/Smith opened, and still a meh from me.

...the greatly underrated Dave Graney's various bands (Moodists, Coral Snakes, Yellow Mist), the brief career of The Sunnyboys, Eddy Current Suppression Ring, Ed Kuepper's post-Saints stuff, I enjoy the broadly-loathed Frenzal Rhomb, Christine Anu, Warumpi Band, you can keep digging and just find more gold.
