(Bloomberg)   It was thirty years ago today, when the markets were in disarray. Every trader had a certain style, but Black Monday took away their smiles. So may I introduce to you, the act you've known for all these years: Sgt. Bloomberg's Lonely Hedge Fund Band   ( bloomberg.com) divider line

Will my 401k feed me, will it still house me, when I'm 64?

Craziest 5 days of my working career. I was on a project to appropriately inventory and price bond portfolios for a bank intermediary and the price swings broke my (very early) Lotus 123 model. A lot of people lost their shirts when they bailed out, while others rode it down and came out great.

The market goes up, the market goes down, the market goes up and the only people that get burned are the timers.

As an aside, two of the hedge funds that have been shorting Tesla have closed this year. Just saying.

The human brain is predisposed to finding patterns. If the markets were that easy to time, I'd be retired. For all we know, the crash could happen in 10 minutes at opening bell, or sometime in 2021.

I'm all set, I have everything invested in bitcoin, bumpstocks, and Campbells Soup (actual cans, not the company's stock).

One of those is bound to be worth something, right?

There are breakers in place now and the markets will actually shutdown if they plunge too far, giving the Feds time to step in and make sure the markets go back up.

Of course, that may not work as expected.

There have been a few tests (the Flash Crash of a few years ago, 9/11). The question is will the transactions overwhelm the breaker system. With some of the modern AI algorithms, it just might.

I remember it well.
I came home from classes, my housemates were gathered in the living room watching the TV, and they all laughed at me as I came in the door.

/made it all back in 9 months

I don't really wanna stop the show
But I thought you might like to know
That traditional pensions are gone
And the boomers have to play along
And I'll tell what this all will do
They're gonna crowd the job market for years
And under-40s won't ever get paiiiiid!

/still a great album

Yeah, that's winning for sure.

CSB:

I consider myself extremely lucky, I happened to be at my mom's office where she worked as an assistant to institutional traders for Smith Barney.  I was only 7 at the time, but I still remember the panic, the WTF looks all around as everyone scrambled to figure out what was happening.  I didn't know what to do, so I just started calling out the INDU ticker as it kept falling and falling so the traders could focus on other things.  It was a really bizarre experience.

You were "calling out the INDU ticker" when you were seven years old?

You mean all those things the Republicans are trying to undo?  And I can hardly wait to see how new Fed chair Ron Paul handles the first crisis of the Trump era.

The people that get burned are those operating on leverage who get margin called. They have no choice but to sell because they bought with borrowed money, and the people that loaned them the money don't like it when it you lose it all.

Nice one subby.  Although you broke precedent by actually having it scan correctly.

Just the number of the value of the DJIA (otherwise known as INDU) as it went down to 1738.  I wasn't calling out all the stocks in real time, just that one.

For the benefit of Mr. Trump, there has been a healthy jump in market cap.
He who claims that he can tell when is the best time to sell's full of crap.
