It's been an enabler of stupid since day 1. It just took the White Supremacists a while to learn how to use it.

People have always used Twitter for stupid things since the beginning.

Twitter needs to be careful...they are on the verge of being forever associated with all the negative crap.  If they tip over that balance point between "allowing free speech" and "allowing hate speech" then they will be done overnight, never to be herd from again.

Twitter going under could only be a good thing for the image of our country (if not at least that of our president).

The great thing about Twitter is its surplus of people who love sharing contrarian, controversial opinions that end with "don't @ me".

Did you really think social media was a one-sided affair? Like I'm just here to hear what YOU have to say?

Twitter was for twits will likely be the historical perspective on the service

From the very first "OK, poop is coming out" to Trumpslaining. It really hasn't come far, has it?

Biatch, please. Silicon Valley does not give a shiat for your feelings. They only want you as another user. They want you to volunteer more of your data. They want you to continue eating up time on their site/application/whatever. Any unwanted social impact, whether it's the return of white supremacy, Russian election bullshiat, etc, is handwashed away as a feature, not a bug. Or worse, it's just not their fault.

Social media companies have had numerous opportunities to take apart bots, perform due diligence on their advertising customers, etc. You know, that popular "let the corporations regulate themselves" mantra a stupid amount of our population like to spew. It is an end product of libertarian bullshiat gone amok, and we all pay for it.

They know they have you by the balls. Now shut up and put your arm out so you can take another hit.

Well, I've always assumed Trump sends those Tweets from the shiatter anyway, so it really is kind of the same thing.

And nothing of value will be lost.

What a way to go for Twitter. It's about money and reception, and geez how low Twitter had to profit themselves.
I quit Twitter just because I didn't like to support some service enabling some white noise to get louder and annoying.

It just took Russians a while to figure out how to manipulate white supremacists with it.

Why is Twitter even a thing?

because smartphones have reduced our attention span to the time required to read 2 or 3 lines of text.

It's called surveillance capitalism: You're not the customer, you're the product. They don't care how you use the service, so long as you use it. And they have programmed it to be addictive for that purpose.

I'm not one to defend Twitter, but this is just human nature working with new tools to fark up the world like they always do.

In the 30's it was microphones and radio. Now it's "smart" phones and social media.
The common denominator is, as always, evil and/or dumb people.

What I find interesting that somewhere between GI and GO, there is a multiplication factor of roughly a MILLION* or so.

*estimate may be off by a factor of a million or so

Exciting new frontier = terribly designed app that for some reason, became immensely popular.   Only instagram is worse on the popularity / uselessness scale.

There was never anything "new frontier" about Twitter. Everyone getting excited about the ability to share every inane thought you have with millions of strangers is one of the definitive signs of the decline of our civilization.

Ah, modern technology.  Think of it as the 'Social Entropy' version of Ripley's Power Loader.  In other words, we're not only going to hell in a handcart, someone added a JATO unit to the handcart.  The 'GI' is amplified by the power of Tony Stark's transistors.

/Yes, I am old.

Twitter is a thing the same way Fark is a thing - we all need somewhere to go and be scum with like-minded scumbags. It just happens that Twitter is scum through and through while the scum on Fark is normally contained in the Politics tab.

I knew about ICP before. I kinda thought they were a parody or something. I had  ot heard about them since high school and just never pictured it as something adults would be into.
