Took a brief break from Skies of Arcadia Legends to finish cleaning up Nuka World in Fallout 4, but now I'm going back in to the open skies in 3D, assuming that Dolphin does not screw things up on me.

Also, I just picked up a New Nintendo 3DS with some special firmware and I've been playing around with it for a bit. I may end up selling my old 3DS model (LoZ-branded unit) if I can find a decent price for it. I have CFW on it, so I might be able to get something for it, if eBay does not kill the auction.

Favorite gaming mods:

Brutal Doom for Doom
Unfinished Business I & II for the Baldur's Gate trilogy.
Ascension for Baldur's Gate II (primarily affects Throne of Bhaal but has effects through the game)
The fan-patch for Vampire: The Masquerade:Bloodlines
Salvage Beacons for Fallout 4 -- this one was so damned useful that I sent a donation to the mod's creator.

Also, I may try out I Am Setsuna if my copy arrives (Switch version, from Japan) tomorrow. I figured that if I have a Switch I might as well have something to play on it, but I wanted something that would not require any firmware higher than its current (3.0.0) as I would like to see if my unit can be hackable.

In the last week?  Bits and pieces of Tekken 7, Uncharted: Lost Legacy, Gundam Versus, Rainbow Six: Siege, and Titanfall 2.

Recent developments have confirmed that I pretty much suck at videogames now.  Gotta get back in the gym and start doing the wrist curls.

Three sets of five for maximum grip strength.  This is what it means to be a hardcore gamer.

For those of you who aren't aware, in the course of releasing StarCraft Remastered, Blizzard has managed to render StarCraft entirely unplayable in an online setting, and it looks like they pushed their weight around to get the largest remaining private server shut down, which was running on an older, stable patch.

All these farkheads had to do was release the StarCraft equivalent of Age of Empires HD Edition and they didn't do it.  But thank God for all of us that StarCraft is in Early Access.  We need to give it time.  It will be here in time for summer of 1998.

Apparently I've decided that I'm not pulling out enough hair from my head. I recently re-started playing Alundra on epsxe and Riven from the MYST series, I had to quit Alundra due to travel years ago, so I've rekindled my frustration. Whee.

While looking for a Diablo clone, discovered Torchlight 2 and have been spending waaaay too much time on that. If anyone could recommend a good hack-n-slash I'd be most thankful.

Escape Room tonight!  First time for any of us, in a brand-new room.

Rick and Morty Munchkin as a warm-up.

Still haunting Colonia in Elite Dangerous. It's very laid back out here.

I've been sick as fark with the flu this past week and I've played almost nothing other than a round of Mechwarrior online here and there and never for any amount of time.

I had preordered Cuphead a while back and played the first couple of levels. It's breathtakingly gorgeous.

I can't wait for this sickness to be over so I can actually get in to it.

I beat the legend of heroes: cold steel 1/2 awhile back so I finally got around to playing trails of sky trilogy over the past week.  Still on the first game though.  I love the characters more but damn the game is hard.  Gonna start calling it trails of dark souls.

Been replaying Mad Max, because there's something deeply cathartic about roaming the waste land in your awesome custom car with you crazy high priest of mechanus side-kick.

For anyone who still hasn't bought it:  Its not replaying the events of the recent movie or any of them but its set in the same world/local region and from my understanding its pre-last-movie.  Imorten Joe's son is the main nemesis in this one and mentions like bullet farm and gas town are liberal.  Its atmosphere is dead-true to the series, pretty damn dark themes and a lot of rich content in there.    Extremely well done game world too, the region you start in is somewhere off the coast of Australia where the ocean used to be so most of the forts and bases are all rusted out ship-wrecks and such.  Game play wise picture a typical assassin's creed type open world divided into zones of control with a scattering of common activities across them.  There's a main story to follow and a couple side-quest type things but its pretty open to just picking a target and going for it.  One of your secondary objectives is to build up the local warlords' bases but weakening Scrotus's(son of Joe) hold over the region by whacking his bases, taking out his convoys and generally killing every war boy you run into.

Car combat is brutal but your priest-mechanic will repair your car infinitely between fights and even if you get into a bad spot you can hop out and deal with things while he brings the car back to life.

Ground combat is very assassin's creed style where you are one vs many, you are typically just using your fists to punch the crap out of war boys and other dessert evils.  You have a shotgun and knives but they're more for special situations, ammo while not exactly scarce isn't plentiful enough to just shoot your way through encounters.

I found it played better with the xbox controller then keyboard, specifically for the driving part.

I also just bought a sweet new 34" ultra wide that arrived yesterday so I've been getting a little screen-shot happy.

Decided to try early game rushing in Stellaris with a Determined Exterminator machine mind.

Worked pretty good.  Took 3 empires before they could build space ports on their first colony/two colonies, which gave me enough planets (and enough energy from chemical processing of the inhabitants) to roll over the 3rd closest who was doing an excellent job of getting established and almost stalled me between his fleet and spaceports.  With his 5 planets added that put me in control of a good 1/4th of the 2500 star galaxy with around 15 planets at a time when building them up myself would have put me at 5ish.  Next empire had just a few more planets than I could claim in a single war, so I absorbed what I could then moved past them to the next and did the same.  Then those two made defensive pacts with the guy past THEM, so I declared on him and they got dragged into the war despite having 5-10 years of truce left.  Took chunks out of all 3 empires and just kept rolling rolling rolling.I had about 3/4ths of the map under my control before I paused being in war even once, and then it was just to start upgrading my fleet in between wars so it'd be ready for eating Fallen Empires.

I'm happy with how this went down, other than with so many planets and so little development it takes years to get a single tradition and I still only have 1 ascension perk so far.  However, I started this game to play around with Determined Exterminator's 25% weapon damage increase and see if I could get Kinetic Artillery damage high enough to one shot ships. =/  Not going to be much point to chasing levels of +damage tech now, especially with so many planets multiplying research costs.

Slightly less panic this week.  Ran my first DM session last Sunday and it was incredible.  Got halfway through the planned adventure, which was a surprise, because I was worried I didn't have enough material. Never underestimate your players' abilities to overturn every rock looking for clues and treasure.

And speaking of players, I had no idea how much fun it would be to watch them ruin my plans.  Underground cavern filled with mysterious places and people?  They cut right through to the heart of the matter by casting Speak With Animals and bribing a rothe with delicious moss.  Epic cliffside battle fending off swarms of giant bats, with swarms of critters waiting up top?  The wizard flew to the top of the cliff and fireballed half the mobs.

I'm going to have to rebalance for the next half, because no matter what I throw at them, they come up with a creative solution that makes it look easy.

2017-10-06 08:19:16 AM
Side note:  You cannot stop once you start this process.  When populations start dying off from chemical processing your energy tanks and you're suddenly -300 energy with a fleet cost through the roof.  I've got 2500 out of 4700 fleet capacity currently, and no way to support it without new victims coming in.  Thankfully I'm almost done with the 109 months of research mega structures took and have access to a ruined Dyson Sphere.  Once that gets up and running it will stabilize even my sprawling empire.  (along with my sectors having been switched over to energy focus for now).  The ruined science nexus will help with further research to be ready for end game crisis, which I'm now at 110 years in and have taken out the first awakened fallen empire and one other for good measure.  Also, I have a multiple crisis mod, so this should get exciting.

It is indeed a great game.  A little grindy, tho, but then, I like grindy (more than 1k hours in Elite Dangerous).

As for what I'm playing this week:  the usuals (Rocket League, Elite Dangerous), some new stuff (Heat Signature), and I'm itching to replay something else but not sure what yet.  This usually ends with me digging out Jagged Alliance 2 again, but that's really starting to look old now.  :D

Gungeon with a friend, on one side killing the bosses is easier , on the other the camera not being dependent on one character means you get shot at from out of the screen way more often.

Fun game tho, it takes a bit to get some unlocks going but once you do it gets fun.

My favorite mod of all time was BF1942 Mod: Desert Combat.  It brought the game into the modern era with tanks, jets, helicopters and everything.  Some of the people that played that mod would bring crazy expensive equipment (fancy joysticks, etc) to play with extreme accuracy.

Picked up Mass Effect Andromeda for $20, have to say I'm pleasantly surprised.  I understand it was buggy as all hell, but underneath that is a solid game.   I love the ideas they created in Andromeda, and while the presentation isn't quite as clean and polished as 2 or 3, the concepts are great, the galaxy feels different enough, and there's tons of potential here.    No DLCs to come though, but we may end up getting more content in a sequel, or they may choose to go back to the Milky Way.    Fine with either idea.  Just a good scifi explorer RPG.

Grim Dawn is also good.  A sort of Solomon Kane-ish setting with a world being invaded by several flavors of Great Old Ones.  It's not free, but the character advancement system isn't nearly as deep as the one PoE either.

Heh I'm about to crush my party's spirits next week as their poor choices a few sessions ago have led to a key ally's gristly death.  They don't know this yet as they've been mucking around in an unimportant goblin den for a few sessions now, but it's all about to come out.

I've been playing Warhammer Total War II all week.  Just finished my first playthrough with the High Elves.  The HE are disgustingly ridiculously powerful.

The GameCube version running on Dolphin, using a widescreen code (only for the rendering, not for the UI/2d features because that was causing problems) and side-by-side stereoscopic 3D that works surprisingly well.

Been playing Dragon Age Origins lately.

Just had a session last night.

We came up on some NPC that was sick.  We got a good medicine check and figured that he had eaten something bad and would be okay if we could get him to throw up.  So my teammates start looking though their inventory to see what they've got that would do that, and I start browsing my spell list.

Me: "I think I picked up stinking cloud.  Did I get stinking cloud?  And does it still work the same way it did in the gold box games where if someone failed the save it said they stood there retching?"

The Ranger (irl a paramedic): "I've got a medicine pouch, but none of these things will actually make a person throw up.  Wait a minute: I picked up a spice rack somewhere!  Does it have ... yes!"

Result: we made a sick guy puke by giving him the cinnamon challenge.

Went back to Civ 5 for a bit & was surprised at how many Civs I somehow hadn't actually won a game playing (and I've got close to 3000 hours in at Civ 5, how the HELL did I never complete a game as Washington or Bismark?)

So I'm kickin' through a bunch of smaller games and using the leaders I'd not so far

Doing more Battletech testing too, which is always fun. Giant stompy robot tanks with LRMs are just viscerally awesome

Smoking GNU: Been playing Dragon Age Origins lately.

I should replay that.  I enjoyed the hell out of it at the time and did absolutely every nook and cranny of the game with each of the characters.

But I've forgotten all that now, I bet it'd be fun to redo it.

Two more game mods that I highly recommend:

Nehrim: At Fate's Edge, a mod for Oblivion.
Enderal: The Shards of Order, a mod for Skyrim.

I tried Arktwend for Morrowind but I could not quite get into it. I may go back and try it again, but Morrowind's gameplay is a bit too clunky for me unless I am using mods like Combat Enhanced.

2017-10-06 09:18:30 AM
I've been playing Hearts of Iron 3 (no, not 4) and have restarted as Germany several times on Easy until I could get a feel for how all of the units work, diplomacy, air and naval combat, and all that good stuff.  This one I am going to see through the end.  Working on aligning the Netherlands and Belgium with the axis, driving England out of Africa, and three-fronting the USSR from Europe, Turkey, and from China (japan owns them).  One amusing thing, I was conquering Finland, and a Japanese fleet landed a small force at the north of it while I was coming up from the south (I landed an armored force at Turku), and now we are both built up on the boarder of the USSR.

Its a strange game.  I might try as Poland next, just to see if I can ruin someone's day.

As far as mods, I like Caliente's stuff, but I'm pretty pervy.

Of course someone has a spice rack.  It's been a running gag in my 15-year D&D group that someone is always carrying a full tea set.

Historically, that's been one of the causes for empires falling.  You start conquering outlying areas and get reliant on an influx of booty and slaves to fund your core, and eventually you either hit an ocean (examples are for Rome, in this case Spain), an enemy you can't beat (Parthia), somewhere that's just not worth conquering (the northern half of Britain), or it's just too far away and your supply lines can't go that far (past Germany).

5 star chef of tv dinners: I beat the legend of heroes: cold steel 1/2 awhile back so I finally got around to playing trails of sky trilogy over the past week.  Still on the first game though.  I love the characters more but damn the game is hard.  Gonna start calling it trails of dark souls.

The PSP/Vita Trails games have a really strange difficulty progression, where at low level things are stupidly hard, and even cheap road mobs can wipe your party if you're not prepared.  Then around midgame there's an abrupt shift, and average mooks aren't even work the time it takes to run an encounter on them, but that's also when the bosses go from 'stronger, faster, tougher mooks' to 'I get to move between every character action and am immune to all effects and have ridiculous DEF/ADF and a whole-map S-craft that does 80% damage with status effects.  Is that a problem for you'?

But the story development and characters and the entire world are just so amazing you don't even care about that, and want to be a better player just to get more of the story.  I even beat the goddamned fishing game in 3rd, just to be able to see the full story, and it's COMPLETELY WORTH IT.

/fan of the series, could you tell?

Been working on recoding an old browser based strategy game from 1999-2004 called Shattered Empires. Hope to have something to show for it in a month or so.

I am still playing the new metroid. I haven't had a lot of time for it as I have been playing the meta game called "job hunting".

Favorite gaming mod would be a toss up between VtM:Bloodlines wesp5 unofficial patch, Morrowblivion, and Tale of Two Wastelands for FO3 and NV.

Oh, and for mods, i'ma assume you mean really big mods?

I'd have to say the Crossfire Mod for Freelancer.

MaxTigar: I can answer both questions in one statement...

Tekkit Legends.

I've been playing this a lot with my daughter recently.  Tekkit has always been very high on my favorite mod list.

Other mods I've played a ton of over the years were Counterstrike and Day of Defeat, back when those were mods instead of actual games.  I played a lot of 'History in the making' mod for Civ 4.

Enderal is up there too.  That is practically it's own game instead of a Skyrim mod, but it is a Skyrim mod, so it counts.

This week, I've been playing Elite: Dangerous.  I took a big step in my goal of unlocking all of the engineers: I can now access Bill Turner and his PA blueprints.  You have to mine 50 tons of Bromellite, which was boring but didn't take too long, and you have to get the permit to access Alioth, which took longer but I was able to get by bounty hunting.  Bounty hunting is a LOT more fun than mining.

Dusted off my copy of FreeSpace2 and playing the Wing Commander Saga mod, good stuff.  I've been eyeing upgrading the rig for some time now, are there any playable demos of E:D out there?

I had a fun couple hours with Crusaders of Lost Idols. There's no way I can't try the DnD version.

I've finally given up GTA 5 after a couple years of enjoyment. I think rockstar has killed the game purposely with all the dlc that you have to constantly grind for and I will not buy shark cards. So, I have to find another game now.

Finished Mario + Rabbids, don't think I'll do any of the post game content. I tried one super trial and it wasn't fun.

Back to Breath of the Wild, and playing Golf Story. A little annoyed how little actual "golf" there is so far in the story mode. You get one 9 hole round in at each course after doing a dozen mini challenges and fetch quests. I get that they're trying to emulate the old Mario Golf Camelot games, and that's exactly what I want, but there is way too much nonsense thrown in.

Was away on a hiking trip for 2 weeks so I didn't get much done on the SS4 modding, the community is still bare-bones as nobody wants to learn the editor or C#, however i've gotten most of what I want out of a test level including winning conditions. Last thing I have to do is setup a unit group control script for the enemy so at least a battle is somewhat dynamic. Water for whatever reason is impossible to setup though.

Otherwise been playing Metroid: Samus Returns, if you enjoy the super metroid/metroidvania style games then this will fit the bill pretty well. Not sure how much I will finish before succumbing to the Cuphead hype though.

Stellaris, running a 'normal' robo collective
Threw in with some Determined Eradicators early, but their ineptitude at war held us up against a wall of organics who didn't want to become robochow

But...just got my first War in Heaven to start

And my empire is right between the two
So tonight I'm breaking my federation and hoping I can survive long enough to get in with the squishies in making a stand

Love this game

Also picked up Transistor on sale last weekend, about an hour in and quite enjoying it, I'll have some free time next weekend and looking to run to completion

Vladof Gaige was neglected a little bit, farming for my next Peak run hit a wall, but a friend happened across 2 of the 3 pieces of kit on my list so that adventure will resume soon

Some of my favorite mods include Synergies for Torchlight 2, and the filterable Unofficial Community Patch for BL2.
Having build variety return to OP levels is divine, and being able to adjust some of the overbalancing by the authors lets me not feel guilty

DragonIV: some new stuff (Heat Signature)

This game consumed a lot of time for me, but it's a damned blast and the steam friends popping into your game is kind of neat. One of my friends found a self charging, rechargeable slip stream (basically infinite bullet time, for those unfamiliar). He tells me about it, my jealousy increases, and the next day I find it in my game as a drop.  With a character that had a silenced auto-rifle. I think I picked up 346 kills, 13 KOs (all capture missions), and no living witnesses before I retired her because she was only getting 4% liberation.

I'm thinking of getting Cuphead once I get paid again (I'm kid-broke). Anyone played it yet? Yea? Nay? It looks gorgeous and tough as nails.

I'm starting to get burnt out on Overwatch, I might pick DooM back up just for a change of pace. I'd like to get into The Witcher III but I just don't have the time for games that take that long anymore.

2017-10-06 09:40:18 AM
Still playing Samus Returns. I think that I have maybe 15 metroids left to find.
I'm stuck on the third section of a timed boss fight at the moment, and it's kicking my ass. Gonna attempt it again today on my lunch break and see if I can knock it out. When I have trouble with a boss, I usually will set it down for a day and then come back and beat it within the first couple tries.  Also picked up NES Remix and have been working through that. It's a cool little ADD satisfying diversion if I don't have a whole lot of time to play.

Console wise, I picked up the Wolfenstein games and am working through the first levels of New Order currently. Pretty fun so far, although I find myself wanting to apply Doom's run & gun method of play to it (maybe I need to just go back and play through Doom again).

Every once and a while I do enjoy chilling out and playing No Man's Sky for a bit. Still working on the base set up missions. Trying to hire on a Gek to manage farming/agriculture. Trying to save up for a new ship. I also really need to find a new multitool, but it seems like they've reduced the frequency in which you find them. At launch, it seemed like I found new ones at almost every outpost, but since the update they are few and far between.

I wanted to pick up Forza 7 but everything I've read makes me want to hold off. I've paid for the VIP since F3 but with their decision to nerf it (I know they've come around on that), and the changes they've made to game progression (No more credit boost for using fewer driver nannys, hundreds of cars locked behind an exclusive content wall that ushers you to buy loot boxes to open them). I don't think I want to reward them any longer. I hate this move to microtransact the shiat out of everything.

Ehh... Maybe I'll just go back to playing Mario World on SNES.

Won't take long. I think my first play through was under ten hours.  It's such a pretty game.

Dimensio: Two more game mods that I highly recommend:

Nehrim: At Fate's Edge, a mod for Oblivion.
Enderal: The Shards of Order, a mod for Skyrim.

I can't recommend Enderal enough.  It's just stunning- the main plot and side missions are just better than Skyrim itself all the way around.  Five minutes into the game you're going to be sitting there with a "WTF JUST HAPPENED?" expression on your face

/Off to get a nice crispy piece of meat.

I watch Funhaus videos of GTA 5 unline antics from time to time. I would like to thank them personally for reminding me why I never reinstalled after the HDD holocaust.

Divinity Original Sin 2 is currently owning my down time.

xalres: I'm starting to get burnt out on Overwatch

I'd recommend you take a look at two games: Gigantic and Battlerite. The former is closer to Overwatch, in terms of pace, but with more strategic elements (map control and Guardian management is critical).  The latter is a top down battle arena, but much more tactical and plays almost like a fighting game.

Got into to the Total War Arena beta - multiplayer 10v10 total war battles with your standard free to play earn xp / credits to tech up your commanders and units grind.

Each player gets control of 3 units, only played a couple battles but feels like something that is really going to benefit from playing with a couple friends because finding yourself outnumbered 9 to 3 right off the bat means you're not going to have a good battle.

Also, I think Mashinky is available today on steam, looks like a faithful entry into the transport tycoon / railroad tycoon so I'll probably give that a try this weekend.

2017-10-06 09:47:23 AM
Still Fallout 4 and FF14. (Speaking, if anybody wants a recruitment code for some bonus xp stuff, lemme know.) Some STO.

I'm kind of craving Civ 5 again, though, so I might install that at some point.

Yup. It's well worth the money. Kind of a gunpoint/hotline Miami/Monaco love child.  You'll love the first time you concussion hammer your capture target through a window into space, then remotely fly your pod to pick him up.

Or when your personal mission is to assassinate the guy who killed your brother, so you hijack another ship and shoot his engines out, rip his entire ship in half with missiles, then slowly float by the wreckage to watch him asphyxiate in space.

Total War Warhammer II.  Beat a hard campaign as Mazdamundi and it was hard for sure.  I really like the changes to the game and the vortex campaign.  Not sure if I'm going to do another playthrough real soon.  Have to decide if I want to do Mazdamundi again or try Kroq Gar or play as rats.  I may wait until they add Norsca in and some more lords and races.  I like it when the map is full of factions.  I love this huge map but if I had a complaint, Id say it's thin on playable factions which of course will be fleshed out.

I took the advice of another Farker and sprang for Skyrim Special Edition for my XB1. What a difference - it went from "this looks pretty cool" to "DAMN." I'm already past the point I'd played on the PS3 version and looking forward to more.

In RPG news, I've restored my old Heavy Gear Web Site at Banzaidyne III Redux, and have been updating some of my Heavy Gear D6 work at Banzaidyne IV. Stop on by!

Finished Assassin's Creed on Tuesday (did everything but the flags....fark the flags).

Started Assassin's Creed 2 later that night and am still playing it.  Good game, probably the best of the AC series, but so obvious that it's a console port....the draw distances....and no ini/cfg tweaks to fix it....

Going to play Assassin's Creed 3 next unless I pick up the rest of the Ezio Collection before then.

I'll get Origins like I get every other AAA game that isn't online FPS -- a year later and at least half off with all the DLC bundled.  If there aren't multiplayer servers to go dead or I don't care to use the multiplayer features, I don't care when I buy a game.

I didn't have the cash to upgrade my multi-tool for a long time. Outposts always had some crazy expensive one that I couldn't afford and then one day I got a 24 slot one as a reward from some monolith or something. Of course the outposts started offering reasonable multi-tools afterwards that I no longer had any use for.

Non Sequitur Man: Apparently I've decided that I'm not pulling out enough hair from my head.

Might look at Grim Dawn if you haven't already. It got several play-throughs out of me. Think an expansion is about to drop as well.

I'm on my last run of FO4. I've apparently averaged more than 4 hr/day since release. To say I have no life/have a problem is probably an understatement. Good thing my wife still loves me.

This is Canadian Thanksgiving so I plan on finally getting around to uploading my Princes of the Apocalypse twitch streams to youtube and finishing the brotherhood quests in Skyrim!

Other than that my tabletop games are going well:

Princes of the Apocalypse: The gang finished the Howling Caves and killed Aerisi, the Evil Air Cult High Priestess. 2 prophets down, 2 to go. This is going to be fun. Since we're winding down this campaign I'm planning on playing Storm King's Thunder next.

Tomb of Annihilation: Played our first session last night and got to level 2 with my fighter Beatrix. Stole a Lich's phylactery to figure out what this death curse is all about. Heading to the Beatrix's husband homeland of Chult to investigate.

Derelict Sky: Husband's homebrew campaign. Still working out the rule system for this one because it's Era the Consortium and we're just playing through.

theresnothinglft: Found myself playing Planet's Edge on Archive on the train this week.  That one could use a remake.   That and finished the story for Guildwars 2 Path of Fire earlier this week.  I'm about out of things to do in Breath of the Wild before going and killing Ganon.

Always had a soft spot for Planet's Edge. There aren't enough Ultima-style games about getting into your spaceship and landing on planets. There was an old SSI one called Star Command. Craziest thing about Star Command was that it came with all these obsessively detailed weapons for the height of Jagged Alliance-style realism but then you couldn't move your guys separately, they had to huddle together in a clump that was either everyone hiding in a space jungle tile or not.

I would like to remind everyone that a true mod MODIFIES the root game files, hence the name "modification", this means that the Sexy Girl mod for Counter-Strike is a mod of a mod, and that the Sexy Girls map for Warcraft III is NOT a mod, I say this as one of its original creators.

I write this because your implication seems to be that "mod" is determined by file size, when any long-time Usenet user would know better.

That times 7 trillion.

I'm also not a fan of 20 different pre-release editions of a game or pre-release DLC (that's just a slap in the face).  To combine those with microtransactions....well fark me running....

I imagine it will be the same with ships. Everything that it's throwing at me now is just out of my reach, far out of my reach, or equivalent to what I currently have. I'm just not finding what I want. I'll probably see the same thing you did with the multitool once I've finally acquired one.

2017-10-06 10:08:05 AM

tdyak: My favorite mod of all time was BF1942 Mod: Desert Combat.  It brought the game into the modern era with tanks, jets, helicopters and everything.  Some of the people that played that mod would bring crazy expensive equipment (fancy joysticks, etc) to play with extreme accuracy.

I played a ton of DC, and yes, had a joystick for flying the helicopters. That was an incredible mod, and I don't think I played vanilla 1942 after it came out.

I've also been looking into the massive shiatfest that has been the release of Bethesda's "Creation Club"

1. time bomb for your HDD. *especially* if you're a space-challenged SSD player
2. it's the exact opposite of what they originally said it would be....it's poorly copied free mods that you have to pay for
3. Skyrims's are slightly less liquid ass than Fallout 4s, but only slightly. The ass is a thicker liquid, I guess
4. The charge cash money for the 'credits' for this crap, and upsell you on bundles THAT way, too

It's pretty much a double-fisted middle finger faceplant all the way around

BumpInTheNight: Been replaying Mad Max, because there's something deeply cathartic about roaming the waste land in your awesome custom car with you crazy high priest of mechanus side-kick.

I also just bought a sweet new 34" ultra wide that arrived yester ...

I really enjoyed this game.

It is also the only game I have rage quit and will not finish.  The Stank Gum race towards the end in the city was impossible for me to win. Not sure how much of that is due to keyboard/mouse or my play style.  The close confines were just too difficult for me to maneuver (had the correct light vehicle load out, everything upgraded).

The PS2 I picked up is working quite nicely, and I've been spending a my spare time loading games onto it. I should have picked up a 320GB drive for it (and probably will now, considering IDE drives are just going to get harder to find) but I wasn't even sure the damn thing would even work. 250GB will have to do for now. There's a few games I've had serious cravings for that I want to get back to, and still a few more that I never found time to play, but mostly the farker's going to end up being a Burnout 3 machine oh god yes.

I don't really ever go for mods that significantly change gameplay, so the only one I can think to put up would be Brutal Doom. My Oblivion and FO3 modding pretty much stuck to visual overhauls and bugfixing. Much older games usually get things like engine overhauls to up visual fidelity and basic QoL improvements like Zandronum, Darkplaces, whatever Quake 2 has now. PCSXR-PGXP also gets mention for taking Playstation games and (mostly) fixing all the weird visual bugs due to the limitations of the original hardware. No more wiggly-jiggly textures and polygons.

Gave up on Fallout 4 for a second time. I like some of the things they've done, like the power armor change, but the game just leaves me cold. I feel the need to find somewhere cozy to move into, and this game just doesn't have it. Home Plate is utter shiate, and trying to turn a settlement into a base is just isn't doing it for me.

Also gave up on Borderlands 2. Was having a fun Maya Cataclysm run for the first time, but every time I have a playthrough, I'm reminded of my two biggest bugbears with this game. I find it too long for a loot, multiple difficulty game, and those damn repeat visits to areas. Defeat Flynt. Then let's do it all over again just to burn a midget. It sucks the life out of me. Maybe I'm just in a gaming rut at the mo.

Did start Unreal World and Sunless Seas, though. And dipped into my GOG list of shame and started Dark Falls. There are noises, and floorboards creaking.

Oh, mods.
ENBoost to cap my FPS at 72 since FO4's engine freaks out any higher than that.
House fixes for Croup Manor, Kingsport Lighthouse, Taffington Boathouse and Egret Tours Marina
Reshade\SweetFX for better image
Some outfit packs
CBBE and BodySlide
Ballistic Armor without Railroad
Skip raiding of settlements for Nuka World
Dogmeat's armor
Expanded Ballistic Armor
Several others I'm forgetting.

I've tweaked what I can but I'm still fighting the low-res texture bug (thought ENB was supposed to help with that) and the occasional CTD when exiting buildings. Figure it's one of my mods but haven't wanted to spend the time to hunt it down.

Since someone mentioned mod size above, one of my favs is a tiny little mod for Skyrim called Wet and Cold. All it really does is add some extra AI behaviour and visual effects depending on the weather, like visible breath and NPCs putting on hoods etc when it's snowing. It adds an incredible amount of atmosphere to the game, and I can't really play without it, anymore.

Glad to see the Script Extender and SkyUI  for the SE are in alpha, at last.

6nome: xalres: I'm starting to get burnt out on Overwatch

Burnt out from the burn-outs "burning" you?

Yeah, kinda. Getting into a match where the people not only have their headsets plugged in, but actually USE them to coordinate is rare. Getting into a match where folks will actually switch to what''s needed instead of sticking to their "main" is even rarer. So I've just been playing deathmatch and mystery heroes for the most part.

UNC_Samurai: Summercat: Ive been playing that DnD idle game.

I don't know why.

Been working on recoding an old browser based strategy game from 1999-2004 called Shattered Empires. Hope to have something to show for it in a month or so.

A browser version of Twilight Imperium?  You have my attention.

Ah, no. Shattered Empires was a mapless post-apoc strategy game more akin to Civilization 2, but with some SMAC style unit design. Combat was abstracted and you could only attack a nation to take a city.

What made it work was major mechanical changes depending on your government and economy, and a robust roleplaying on the forum.

It was written in Perl. I've got a partial codebase and enough to make educated guess where I'm missing data. Rewriting it in Python and Flask.

A Twilight Imperium clone online might be more than I can do.

Thanks, I'll put this on my list. It would have really added a lot to Bleak Falls Barrow.
Any other "atmosphere" mods like that? I know someone mentioned a set of mods that turned Skyrim into a horror game - fog on the ground, dampened sound so wilderness encounters are more of a surprise, etc.

Been random stuff for me lately. Mainly rocking out with Trackmania: Turbo and Disc Jam the last few nights. Fired KSP back up. Failing miserably at the PU:BG clone mode for Fortnite. Finally playing MGS5 since it's a PS+ freebie this month. Likely stick with it for a while, enjoyable so far.

Mods? JHS map for DF2:JK back in the day, any graphic and 'cheat home' mod for Elder Scrolls/FallOut.

cant believe i actually grinded 50 Loyce Souls for the Soul of Alhanna. the jump from 35 souls to 50 is mindnumbingly irritating with very few players still summoning help, even with all the item-find bonus gear. i turned her soul in for Eleum Loyce but i was so tired i havent tested it yet. i have enough Petrified Dragonbone to upgrade it i think. he's lvl 206 after blowing a lot of the souls (couple million in the time it took to get from 10 loyce souls to 50) but now its done i wont do it again.

/Dark Souls 2 for those unaware

Yeah, I pretty much HAD to delete FO4 after that went live as I wasn't playing it anymore but it was taking up nearly 100g (iirc). There's a spacesaver mod out on the Nexus, of course, but still felt I needed to free up space.

Ayaaaaa.

Haven't been able to play Synthetic dawn yet because my mods haven't caught up to the new pieces of the game yet and the game crashes on startup.

Been playing Dragon Age Origins lately.

Be sure to opt in to 1.8.1 if your mods catch up before the patch goes full release, it fixes a few teething problems with Synthetic Dawn.

Snap n' Build (which is the source of most of my architecture) was available on XBone but unfortunately the author pulled it. I have since located some similar building mods that are also, I believe, available on a console.

Much of the decor comes from the Homemaker and Settlement Objects Expanded mods. The former is not available on XBone, but the latter is.

Patience, however, is definitely a requirement. I used to build quick-and-dirty settlements using prefab wooden shacks. I then realized that doing that resulted in settlements that were quick-and-dirty, so I went to more complex structures using in-game assets. They looked nicer, but still run-down and dilapidated. That is when I started looking for actual building mods.

Oh, and in regards to the mods question, since I'm discussing Stellaris, my current recommended mods out of what I'm using:

Glavius's Ultimate AI Megamod
Auto-Auto Explore
Automated Behavior Adjustment
Autonomous Assembler
Cyberxkhan's Namelist
Epic Galaxies- Size, Shape, and Core
Epic Galaxies- Dim Core
Extra Events Fixed (flagged for 1.8 so it throws an error on start, but works)
Faster FTL
Glub Glub - Fishbowl Portraits
Gods and Guardians
Guilli's Planet Modifiers
LEX - Leviathan Events Xtended (mixed feelings.  They're a weird bunch and the tone feels different from main game)
More Events Mod (excellent)
Multiple Crises
No Mining Station Maintenance (I get so tired of back and forth twiddling to balance energy and mineral space mines)
Risa's Unofficial Patch to 1.8.1

Haven't used yet but looks promising:  Enhanced Robomodding.  There literally aren't enough traits to make use of the max number of robomodding points and none of them are 'fun'.  This makes it slightly better.

My 15 year old daughter and I have been cruising through Left 4 Dead 1 and 2 and all the DLC this week. My son and I blew through these when he was the age she is now. She has been playing games for a while but this is her first FPS with some horror/gore involved. She'd been standoffish up till now but has embraced it with a passion. I have enjoyed watching her play and how she plays identical to her brother in everything down to the character she plays and her preferred load out. He is coming over tomorrow for dinner and I am putting them on together to watch them fight over it all.

I'm back to playing Tropico 4 after fiddling around with the Black Ice mod of Hearts of Iron 3. xaks: I've also been looking into the massive shiatfest that has been the release of Bethesda's "Creation Club"

1. time bomb for your HDD.

I have already installed a mod that removes the "Creation Club News" window from the Fallout 4 main menu.

Also, I do not know which did it but some mod that I have installed adds a dollar sign in front of the Creation Club option in the menu. The dollar sign also appeared in the Creation Club News window before I modded it out. I found that amusing.

I considered taking advantage of the free-for-one-week "survival" mod for Skyrim until I found a comparison of it with free survival mods available from the Nexus that found that, while the CC mod was better integrated with the game, the free alternatives have more features that make them a better choice.

That's the neat kinda immersion shiat I like getting. FO3 has that mod to remove the green tinge, or the one to add a shiatload more period music to GNR. Oblivion has stuff like Natural Environments (adds a whole bunch of dynamic weather) or Illumination Within (occupied buildings will have lit windows; windows will dynamically darken depending on the sleep schedules of the people inside) or Book Jackets, which pretty much does exactly what it says on the tin, making the various books visually identifiable. It also has a dumb little mod to drop in Patrick Stewart and Sean Bean heads onto their respective characters.

I had a lot of fun with dual wielding pistols and stacking attack speed.  Basically turn yourself into a machine gun.  It was a bit of trouble against large groups, but great against single targets.  I eventually stopped with it when I got to the Room of Death - which is nothing but large groups and locked doors.

The second one I had fun with was a retaliation build.  It absolutely tore through melee enemies, but it didn't have a lot of direct damage so for magic only bosses you might have to sit there a while and chop them down.  It was absolutely unkillable though; I went through all of Act 4 and a couple of the roguelike dungeons on hardcore with that build - and survived even though I had never run that content before.

Finished Terraria. What a great game. was able to slaughter expert mode with all my end game gear in no time flat. I may start an expert mode game from scratch (but I will keep my wings. I can't go back to having no movement. I can't do it)

Picked up both Golf Story and Stardew Valley on the Switch. Stardew is as great as ever. Golf Story is super charming.

Theaetetus: tdyak: My favorite mod of all time was BF1942 Mod: Desert Combat.

I played BF2, but jumped back to DC after a while (Some of the servers just had a better community / awesome players).  There was one server that did BF1942:DC Berlin CTF that I thoroughly enjoyed.

I took the time to learn Heli's on the keyboard (damn near impossible), and became an expert in flying a heli in to grab a flag and get out of the base quickly.

I stopped playing the BF series because each new game coming out had less content, smaller maps, fewer players per servers.

While looking for a Diablo clone, discovered Torchlight 2 and have been spending waaaay too much time on that. If anyone could recommend a good hack-n-slash I'd be most thankful.

/she's got the library I built for her in the main living room
//tv, couch and sound system are in the dining room
///who the hell uses a dining room for dining when the kitchen has its own space for a table?

The Grim Dawn expansion Ashes of Malmouth is out October 11th I believe! I've been playing a shiat ton of Grim Dawn lately, having fun trying a variety of builds.

Which classes did you pick for dual wielding pistols?

I've found the phys/bleed/vitality conjurer to be an absolute beast, since devouring swarm and curse of frailty synergize so well.  It works well 2 handed melee or ranged. However, the most fun build in the entire game thus far is the Primal Strike focused "Thor" build. The visceral impact of each hit is just so satisfying.

Still seeking help for my FO4 addiction. Well, seeking isn't the right word. Enjoying. Yes, still enjoying my FO4 addiction. Playing as stealth melee character for the first time, I've just discovered the pleasure of sneaking up on a foe and smashing him or her with a heated super sledge. The urge to build up my gun skills was hard to resist, but this might make it worth it.

Playing through the re-release of Dragon's Dogma that came out this week.  I love that game, and hope it sells well enough to coax Capcom into making another one.

One of my favorite mods of all time is the Max Payne kung fu mod.  It really changes the nature of the game.

The Flexecutioner: cant believe i actually grinded 50 Loyce Souls for the Soul of Alhanna. the jump from 35 souls to 50 is mindnumbingly irritating with very few players still summoning help, even with all the item-find bonus gear. i turned her soul in for Eleum Loyce but i was so tired i havent tested it yet. i have enough Petrified Dragonbone to upgrade it i think. he's lvl 206 after blowing a lot of the souls (couple million in the time it took to get from 10 loyce souls to 50) but now its done i wont do it again.

/Dark Souls 2 for those unaware

It's...meh.  The heal vs durability hit ratio is really bad, but it is sorta fun to stab allies.  I liked the lightsaber better, though mostly because its a lightsaber.

Been mostly playing FF14 (prepping for IVALICE~) and divinity: original sin 2.  Fane the many faced god decided he was tired of carrying 216 faces and needing 40 strength so decided to store all the faces in various buckets in the Lady Vengence.  He decided to let the people of driftwood live because...he honestly couldn't be bothered killing them.  All the important people of note were killed that aren't paladins, who know damn well to salute me when I walk by.

Reached Arx last night or so, the framerate drops are relatively awful there because of all the burning buildings.

Finally realized I could make WAY better abilities than I have been using.  When I realized I could combine my summon books with fire/ice/lightning/earth for special incarnate infusions, my incarnate has been a glorious murder machine.  Too bad it seems like the totems completely fall off late game, but they are (sometimes) decent at procing some debuffs...when they attack the right person.

doctorguilty: SonsoftheSod: Since someone mentioned mod size above, one of my favs is a tiny little mod for Skyrim called Wet and Cold. All it really does is add some extra AI behaviour and visual effects depending on the weather, like visible breath and NPCs putting on hoods etc when it's snowing. It adds an incredible amount of atmosphere to the game, and I can't really play without it, anymore.

Is that a Fallout 4 mod? Not sure if there's a Skyrim equivalent.

Brother and family are still in the computer room, but they're heading out on Monday to their new abode. Kind of sucks - having fun with the kids. But it does mean I'll get to check out the E: Dangerous update. Probably going to haul ass back to the bubble to remove 5 of the 6 heat sink launchers (now that we can finally manufacture ammo) and pick up whatever I need to run the canopy and hull repair drones.

I was going to do some passenger runs for a quick billion or so, but it sounds like the scruffy nerf-herders already "fixed" those payouts.

It has no third party support and once it breaks you are farked because Nintendo never produces enough units to cover demand.

If that isn't enough I have two words: Nintendo VR.

Continuing my retro gaming stint, I've been playing F.E.A.R., which I have already finished. Now I have moved on to the expansion packs, and,  eventually, the sequels. All of these were offered as a cheap bundle on Steam.
While not a perfect game, FEAR was a lot of fun. No opinion on the expansions or sequels yet, as I haven't played too much of them. Interesting mix of FPS and horror.
I don't have a lot of experience with mods, but I will mention  (again) the New Horizon mod for Stellaris, which sets the game in the Star Trek universe. Great mod, for the music alone.
Happy gaming, all!

So I guess I'll ask this here.  My wife is trying to play a game with me, and we're trying to find out which.  She doesn't want too much blood/killing (hilariously she tried saying she heard borderlands 2 was a good one to play) and she enjoyed castle crashers and to a lesser extent the lego batman games.

I've been thinking about cuphead but I heard that's supposed to be on the harder side.

She also says she likes racing games.

@hammer85: thanks for the heads up. not sure about the durability but he's a mage with Repair and the repair dusts. but also, just about every character gets Repair and i use the spices to lower INT req to 10 if i need to. (i love those spices, hehe, great for taking the 50+ req down to 50.) but also the repair dusts can be bought so its kind of moot either way.

maybe with ring of the evil eye and some other combos the heal thing might be 'interesting' but after grinding that crap i have to use it at least a little before going into NG+.

Overcooked or Lovers in another space time.
Probably both.
Overcooked is a co op kitchen disaster game, Lovers is a shooting game where one person mans the ship and another mans the cannons. Both can hold 4 player CO OP.
My latest COop romp has been Gungeon, but it involves a lot of shooting and pixel dodging. Its a pity that Scott Pilgrim didn't get ported to ps4, the ps3 version was a really fun coop brawler.Gaming for me is a coop affair so feel free to suggest interesting coop games you enjoyed as well.

I'm still bouncing between Path of Exile and Fallout 4

I've been playing PoE for years, but always had trouble with a build that could clear maps since I usually do solo self found (before they added that as an option in 3.0).

I'm having a blast in the Harbinger league.  I found two exalts within 10 minutes of each other a few days ago. Lots of uniques.  Just all in all having mindless fun.

Fallout 4 I'm working through Far Harbor. Still haven't progressed the main quest beyond Diamond City.

Also helping my 11 year old learn Stellaris.  He really loves strategy games.  He's probably better at Civilization 5 than I am at this point.

I spent most of the weekend hopping to 3 different neutron stars about 2500ly out.  I get to the last one and think to myself 'I haven't been to Maia, I should finally get myself meta-aloy and start working on engineers. I also should be able to hop into some never explored systems.'  I route, its only 2500ly to Maia, or 2500ly home.  Maia it is.

Now, with the update, data caches are now legal salvage.  I made stops for degrade signals to pick them up. Small are about 7k.  Large Cache's are closer to 150k. I picked up about 5 large ones on the way  As I'm about 5 hops from Maia, the thought came to me 'waitaminute, I am now carrying something of value, and flying around in a weaponless systemhopper built low mass for higher FSD, and heading for Anarchy.'  I also see that 'goids are popping up in groups of 5 hunting me as I'm scanning my last bits of profit.  From that point on my goal was 'scanning over/time to run/get to the closest station possible'  After hopping into Maia, I quickly found the closest station, and ran.  I escaped two interdictions.  I have the PS4 controller set up that pressing down on the right stick drops speed to 0.  I accidentally pressed down on the stick for one.  I Dropped a large cache to give me a little time to boost my way out.  Apparently one large cash wasn't enough.  dang NPC wanted more.  I escaped, landed and sold it.  Bought meta alloys, plotted a route to farseer, and ran as quickly as possible there in my flying coffin.

After the ~5kly  exploration run, I came back 100mil richer.  I found quite a few terraformables, 2 ELWs and an Amonia world to call my own.

After decking out the Python, I have about 50 mil on hand.  I started to finally work on my less than stellar combat skills.  I am just fine, until I get a wing of 3 after me.  I have been hanging out at a non hazardous RES playing 'guard the NPC'.  Last night I got good enough to watch a pirate drop in, scan it & kill it, before system authority gets to do anything about it.

I guess I'll work on engineers, and community goals now.  I have yet to participate in a CG until now.

You just need to find the right settlement crafting mods that will let you build nice places:

This run, I've been aiming for a mix of Canadian rustic (log cabins, 'soddys'), japanese-style(ish) rock gardens for home courtyards, and Victorian-era London for my architecture. Heavy use of console shenanigans for micropositionning or offsetting wall parts, double-placing objects (the first floor windows on the Jun and Marcy Long's house (image 3) require four overlapping 'parts' per wall section). The roof has overlapping sections, too. They're meticulous to build, and I occasionally break the nav-meshing for an area, but I think the results are well worth it.

Most of the major settlement-construction mods are involved in these images, although not necessarily all up to date. Diamond City, eat your hearts out.

Warframe is great.  It can be a grindy at times if you want to get absolutely everything.  There is a pretty big learning curve and grind especially at the start, but then it gets into a nice groove.  Once you get everything figured out there is always something to do, but not much neccessary to do.

Its worth throwing in a few bucks if you are enjoying yourself after 20 or 30 hours.  It gets you past the 'hump' and into the sweet spot a bit quicker.  Buy some Orokin Catalysts and Reactors, and some weapon and warframe slots.  Then have fun opening planets, doing quests and getting new weapons and warframes.  Its pretty easy to make in game currency once you get to the mid game, and there is a lot of content and things to do.

The new expansion coming next could be amazing and bring this game to the next level too.

elchupacabra: xaks: I've also been looking into the massive shiatfest that has been the release of Bethesda's "Creation Club"

1. time bomb for your HDD. *especially* if you're a space-challenged SSD player

lolwut

Please explain.

The original implementation of the Creation Club pushed out the entire collection of paid mods mini-DLCs to the player's computer/console and then the system would unlock the ones for which the end-user paid credits. This resulted in the initial rollout of CC for Fallout 4 bloating up the game's installation by several gigabytes for crap that, for most gamers, will be completely unused.

I have read that this system has been fixed in some way, but I do not know if the fix actually eliminates all CC pre-pushes or if it even removes the pre-pushed CC content already vomited up onto gaming systems at the initial launch.

Atomic Jonb: Smoking GNU: grumpfuff: Smoking GNU: Freelancer

I haven't heard that name in years. I got a demo of it in PC Gamer when it first came out. I was sorting through my demo CDs in a final clean out, so I gave everything a shot. Freelancer is amazing. I've been trying to get it ever since, but every time I have money to burn I forget to look for it. Unfortunately, it's not on Steam, and that's where I buy most of my games.

Thanks though, you just reminded me of it and I put it on a small list I started for non-Steam stuff.

I don't think you can even buy it anymore. I bought a copy way back when.

And crossfire is an awesome mod for thad game. Adds tons more systems and ships and equipment. And a ton more missions in a really extended single player addition. Although the whole mod is mostly geared towards multiplayer, for which there's still a pretty big community.

I'm hoping you're also familiar with starlancer. Freelancers' prequel.

Crossfire is awesome, but watch the 3X cruise speed increase, there is one mission where you have to race and that always farked me up.

But I'm a shiatty racer, so there is that.

Oh yes, that one. Had that exact problem. Had to go into some game files to edit the speed.

/also, fark you Dexter Hovis

Lord Bear: grumpfuff: How is Warframe? I heard about it and gave it a shot. Played a few hours, got a little further than that first "boss." I really do like it but as I've been getting further I have the impending sense of a huge grind, and I'm not really looking for that right now.

All of this. Don't buy weapons or Frames with platinum. Only buy reactors/catalysts/slots. Take your time and have fun, you'll be able to explore the daytime Plains after completing Vor's prize.

Look at them, the come here knowing they are not pure...

Ok, so the damage has already been done, I take it.  Was worried that by signing in to CC, I committed myself to a punch in my SSDs nads.  Or that future nad-punching was imminent.

This mod supposedly cleans up the mess made by the CC push by replacing all of the CC-related files with tiny dummy files (as long as you choose to overwrite when the Nexus Mod Manager installs it).

I only use an SSD for my OS install, with my games on a standard 2TB drive, so I do not have the space issues that others might encounter but I still do not appreciate a game installation being unnecessarily bloated up.

Stands With A Tiny Fist: Still Fallout 4 and FF14. (Speaking, if anybody wants a recruitment code for some bonus xp stuff, lemme know.) Some STO.

I'm kind of craving Civ 5 again, though, so I might install that at some point.

I started playing CIV V again. After a thousand or so hours in Civ IV, I've discovered I'm not good at Civ V at all. The city states angry up my blood, kill my trespassing dudes, then I have to get all "Blame the Maine on Spain" at them.

Ahaha.  Took out the last semi-legit empire in Stellaris, a fanatical purifier who could barely muster 20k fleet power to my 8 40k stacks.  One planet rebelled.  I was like, eh, whatever he wont do anything alone.  Get the message that he's formed a non-aggression pact, I'm like...wut?  Take a look...the rebellious planet is the same race, but Federation Builder government.  Suddenly 'death to all xenos' doesn't seem so hot, eh?  Works for me still, fleshbag.

I should also add that the wiki is your best friend when you are starting out.  Some of the systems and terminology can be a bit obtuse, and the wiki helps a TON.
http://warframe.wikia.com/wiki/WARFRAME_Wiki

Also, the warframe community is generally the least toxic and most helpful I've seen.  Many clans are always looking for players, and they can help a lot.  Friendly clanmates can often help you out with free mods and stuff, and that helps cut the grind down a lot too.

Make nice with the city-states, then they will allow your military units to trespass without penalty.  Also allow your units to heal as if in home territory.  Or attack them and steal their city/resources.

It will be here in time for summer of 1998.

lolwat. I was going to pick up a copy since I've had issues getting classic BW to run on a modern PC but as the scatologist said after the chimpanzee study, this shiat is bananas.

Tried to get Freespace to run but I think I'm going to have to bust out VMWare again. At least Alpha Centauri still loves me :(

Got the chance to play around with one of the VR backpack computers from work. Really nice, I think I might pick up one if I get a bonus this year. It wasn't using a Rift or Vive, it was one of those MS hololens-based HMDs. I like not being tethered to a desk and it even traced out the room for me and threw up boundary boxes when I got too close to the walls.

Lizara: hammer85: So I guess I'll ask this here.

Can be on either PC or ps4

SpeedRunner, maybe?

My husband and I played Lovers in a Dangerous Spacetime and were annoyed with each other within about ten minutes, so YMMV with that one. I liked the concept, but there was no way to play without sharing a single keyboard, and that's pretty much a recipe for disaster.

I have a couple 360 controllers for PC games so that shouldn't be too much of an issue.

I enjoyed my brief forays into YouTube live streaming Minecraft so much that I just bought a set of dedicated wires gaming headphones for more streaming capabilities. These seem awesome.

Yeah, I got them for the price point, and have been delighted to see that all the website reviews describe them as "best headphones for streaming" unless I want to go for a pro setup with mixing boards and the like. Since I'm not a PewDiePie or Jim Farking Sterling Son type, I don't need pro kit.

I'm working my way through some random smaller games in my library. I'll be moving to a different town next Friday (as my wife got a job there) and will be temporarily unemployed until I find work, so I'll be doing lots of cleaning (both house and game libraries).

Favorite mods:
Baldur's Gate 1 & 2 BiG World mod (that combines both games into one, using the interface from 2)
The Civil War Restoration mod for Skyrim (adds in a bunch of cut civil war content and finishes some unfinished stuff, making it a lot more interactive)

Love Armada. I play as the Empire. Biggest thing I've found in the 4 or 5 games I've played is to take out as many Rebel fighter squadrons as possible early. Use the TIEs to harrass rebel cruisers before sending the Star Destroyers to finish the job.

Yesterday was THAC0 Thursday. We finally got to the cave of legend - the Wave Echo Cave. Supposedly the place is an awesome gold mine and it has lots of treasure and magic items in it. Anyway, we cleared out some bugbears and got to looking around when we encountered A drow named Nezznar. He wanted to talk, but we decided to fight instead of talk. He was holding a dwarf hostage, and we were a little worried that he might try to kill the dwarf, so I cast a Forceful Phantasm on him to try and distract him from the dwarf. He made his saving throw, but then my problem was solved when the Dwarf shapechanged back into a drow - which makes me think that it's actually a doppleganger like the last one that we killed but I digress. Party started hacking away at spiders and bugbears and it got really tight. There were a couple of times that we were pretty sure we were gonna wipe, but the very next round I cast scorching ray and crit once and hit on both of the other rays, so I basically just melted Nezznar into a molten pool of Drow remains. That got rid of the Faerie Fire spell that he had on us, and we were eventually able to kill everyone. Only one member of our party managed to not hit 0 hp during that fight - fortunately we had several healing potions to keep us going in the event that someone cratered. After the fight, we called it a night.

I've been playing a lot of Skyrim the last couple of weeks. My character is up to around level 63 or so. I have made pickpocketing a legendary skill twice now. I've gone legendary on archery, stealth, and smithing once. On this run through the only DLC content that I've messed with at all is Hearthfire, and I only just joined the Companions, which is unusual. I haven't started on the civil war yet, though I plan on joining the Imperials.

I've done some background research, and I feel like the Stormcloaks just don't understand some of the nuance that's going on right now. While Talos is definitely a deity, the continued worship of that deity poses a strategic threat - not just to the Empire in Cyrodil, but to all of Skyrim. The best strategic decision is to be lax on enforcing the White-Gold Concordat and let people practice in secret while you bide your time to eventually beat up the Aldmeri Dominion. If Talos wanted to be worshiped publicly rather than secretly he should have showed up to beat on the Elves. Also, I don't like the Third Reich vibe that I get from Ulfric.

I've been sticking with the Empire myself. I want to play in a tournament, an entry level one, just to make sure I've got the rules right. But ain't nobody playing Armada in Nashville. Lots of X-Wing miniatures players at comic shops, though.

Trying to start enjoying Endless Space 2.

Unfortunately, I think what I wanted was a 'blowy up space armada' game, and what I got was a 'balance the political preferences of various ethnic groups' game.

I'm getting better - as what I mostly want to do is build and fight, and the Empire has a preference for building and fighting.  There's still a few aspects of fleet combat that I seem to be screwing up though, as I had a seriously overpowered Battleship get taken out by a much weaker (on paper) enemy fleet.  Also the game penalizes you for going over a set number of colonies - which is a problem when you conquer enemy colonies.

The game clearly has a ton of depth.  I'm just not sure I personally have enough depth to really enjoy it.

Does a save editor count as a mod? Because my favorite is the gibbed editor for Borderlands games. I like beating the game legit with the vault hunters that interest me, then make a lvl1 person of the others and mod them with max level, legendary gear and infinite ammo. Modded makes replays more fun especially when I get online. If I didn't already have a god complex, I would get one with all the people who give me friend requests or beg for weapon drops.

Started playing Payday 2 with a friend again, got the latest version on the PS4 with all the add-ons. It's still fun as he'll to stealth a bank heist, or mow through a Mallcrasher with a minigun.

Other than that, working through my usual JRPG bullshiat... Atelier, Odin Sphere, and to offset that I've gotten into Mafia 3 quite a bit now. I've been a fan of games that put you in a pair of REALLY uncomfortable shoes, and being a black man in late 1960s New Orleans nails it.

Petey4335: I spent most of the weekend hopping to 3 different neutron stars about 2500ly out.

Last night I got good enough to watch a pirate drop in, scan it & kill it, before system authority gets to do anything abo ..

I'm thinking about doing a long exploration run myself (anaconda modded to about a 40 lightyear jump range) to take a break from grinding to unlock the engineers.  Bubble Nebula sounds like a place to go.

Here's the thing: cities are defensive by nature, and with only a little military, your city's pretty safe for a while. So you need to concentrate on getting your science rolling. It doesn't take that much to get an era ahead of the competition. If you don't go out of your way to piss them off (and they piss off easy), _and_ are militarily strong enough to make them nervous, they'll only insult you and spy on you, but otherwise tend to leave you be.

Trespassing will piss them off, of course, as will taking cities. You can _mitigate_ this somewhat by never annexing nor razing, but warmonger reputation builds up quickly. Worst is taking out city states, even if nobody's pledged to protect them.

What's fun is if you take four city states in rapid succession, the entire world, city states included, will declare war on you. It's not as bad as it sounds, though, if you have that nice science advantage and plenty of artillery to work with, and not everybody will be able to reach you because of border lock. Maybe 50 turns later, if you're not still actively conquering, they'll start giving up and requesting peace.

Still playing some Horizon Zero Dawn.  Got to level 19 today and completed the "Seeker at the Gates" quest.  Been running around collecting coffee mugs and upgrading all of my containers.    Finished by first cauldron and I'm having a lot easier time taking on groups of shellbacks and bellowbacks now.   This is definitely an entertaining game, I may eventually beat the main quest line.

Might start playing Rise of the Tomb Raider if I get bored of HZD, but I don't think that will happen, it's installed and ready, but not likely.

FunkJunkie: cruiser

I meant to reply to this earlier.  Cruisers actually are great tanks, they break the curve on health vs fleet cap cost, plus they get in close, whereas battleships ai stays at max range for their weapons, and corvettes evasion is great and it's good to have a fair whack of them to annoy the enemy, soak fire, etc, but don't underestimate Destroyers.  With their ai bonus to tracking and a good sensor the 1 large weapon 1 medium destroyer can put out great firepower that ALSO has a decent chance of hitting other destroyers and even corvettes.

Battleships, sadly, their 10% weapon damage bonus really doesn't add that much and their bulk is always last to die/soak damage so kind of wasted.

With that said,  I just made 4k fleet cap of battleships because I could.  500 of them, a full fleet in 1.8 now that fleets are limited to 500 ships.  Nearing 150 years in and I still haven't had a crisis spawn.  When it does I'm going to roflstomp it.  Pulling in 5-6k minerals per turn still even with my huge fleet, and starting a second one that is going to be Kinetic Artillery destroyers and devestator torp vettes and cruisers (cruisers fire speed bonus is pretty nice for torps, if you use them.  I tend to not because zero tracking means they never hit vettes pretty much and they're slow and low evasion so PD defeats them.  But if you have ENOUGH of them that stops being a problem.)

My first Social Policy is always to unlock honor...then I farm Barbarians.  After that I fill up Liberty tree for the free settler and the free scientist.  I do Pottery, then Writing and pop out Great Library as fast as I can.

All of this depends on my surroundings however.  I do Custom Games on Huge Maps that are Random terrain.

It's been a biatch of a week at work and the gf had been extra emotional so I've had zero game time.  When I told her I need some downtime yesterday she kept bugging me every 15 minutes, then through a fit in the store because they didn't have the exact sponge she wanted and if I had only gone to Walmart like she asked yadda yadda yadda. And because of all this, no video game time all farking week.

So, I'm playing guitar all night, then probably killing zombies later.  We created awesome defenses, schooled every horde night, save for like 2, so we're starting up a new server with a new mood and adding some friends to it for a 7 man squad of zombie killing.

Ya know. Work has sucked all week and it reached its zenith if bullshiat today. I'm leaving early.

Yup. That works pretty well, although I usually detour for the social policy that improves wonder building in your capital city (usually between unlocking honor and starting on Liberty). Faster you can crank out wonders, more time you can spend building non-wonders (and the more time you cause opponents to waste trying to keep up with you, which almost makes the wonder-building worth doing on its own.)

I do like Rome, though. Build wonders in the capital city while buying normal buildings in the capital city, and then the same building is 50% off everywhere else. I'd be hesitant to try that in a human game, of course, but against the AI, even in a world-war, it's still pretty easy to defend your 'worlds greatest egg basket' capital city. The others, well, you can always take them back if you have to give ground, temporarily.  :)

I usually play Washington in Civ V (Romans in 6), but Ill give Rome a try this weekend and see if the play-style will work for me.  Im pretty pacifist unless someone angers me.  Typical ranged defense in every city (the policy next to the wonder building one makes garrisoned units free) and just pump out buildings that boost culture and science.  However, if another Civ manages to wrest control of one of my cities.  Its on, I will decimate and lay waste to that civilization, I do not make Peace, I can not be reckoned with, I will remove every trace of that Civilization from the game.

With the new Picket AI in 1.8 Destroyers kind of charge in and die messily by the boatload, but I still like having a decent stack of Kinetic Artillery or Large Plasma Destroyers with about 1 in 5 as a point defense destroyer.  Generally speaking the AI likes to punch at it's own weight class if it can, so battleships will tend to target battleships once they're in range, cruisers start in on cruisers (and battleships will start with cruisers if no battleships are there/in range), etc.  You can modify this somewhat by using smaller weapons but that mostly just means they stay out of range of their preferred targets longer, although they will shoot at other stuff on the way.  Likewise I think Destroyers/Cruisers with large weapons will tend to start towards the heavy end then work their way down, but that does make it ever so satisfying when things finally start dropping and the enemy fleet's fleet power just plummets and all they're left with to retreat is the lights.

Oh, and I say all of the above, but the Adjusted automated behavior mod I use actually changes it up some.  There's some hardcoded shenanigans in the combat AI someone added after the game launched that apparently force the combat AI into making some stupid moves that are removed by that mod in favor of weighted target choices.  There are also mods that completely change the behavior of the individual ship ai's but I prefer not to use them.  While it's 'fair' in that the enemy gets the same change, I just don't like outright changing the basic concepts of a game usually.  (although I do have a Flagship/dreadnought research mod I use that gives a 16 fleet power capital ship)

I'm using the NSC mod along with the one that lets you fine-tune the ship tactical behavior per prototype and I gotta say I do love it dearly.  There is danger there in that I design things like my carriers to be far in the back of the pack and the heavies get in closer etc...but if I jump say right on top of an enemy either by landing on the same edge or victim of a station's inhibitor that can be very costly to my intentionally lightly protected 'edge crews'.

Note: Rome is useful if you like lots of cities. Keep in mind, though, that the more cities you have, the more social policies cost. A lot more. Same with science. It's a trade-off, but Rome's bonuses does tend to help mitigate the science part in a big way. Just don't plan on a cultural victory. Rome will easily price this off the table.

You might find this guide handy for figuring out who's going to be most comfortable for you to play. (The US isn't considered especially top in any of the major guides.)  For less-than-top-tier civs, along with Rome if you like expansion, the Incans are worth taking a very close look at if you want to make full use of your territory. They make excellent use of difficult terrains like hilly deserts and hilly tundra, especially with mountains nearby.

Babylon's probably the civ you want to take an immediately close look at, it should solve most of the problems you've described you're having.

I need to consider getting an SSD for my living room computer. I do not know if it can handle Windows 10 but even Windows 7 with an SSD would be an improvement over waiting at least five minutes for the system to come up and load everything.

I should at least look into rebuilding my user profile.

Yah man I freakin love the solid state stuff.  Currently watching the prices for a 'decent' 1TB SSD to replace the last of the spinning rust.  After that it'll be watching prices on the M2 variants to begin the next round of storage upgrades since this motherboard I've got has two slots for them.  Watch black friday for Samsung's evo series, 2/3s the price of their 'pro' line with 90% of the performance and still about 2/3s the price of their Intel equiv.

You'd be surprised what can handle Windows 10. I'll put it to you this way. I have a 13 year old Athlon 64 3200+ with 3 GB of DDR1 RAM and a Radeon 9800 Pro (256 MB) that can run Windows 10 lol.

It depends on how old your PC is and what instructions the CPU supports. As an example, Semprons can't run Windows 10. But anything from about 2006 onwards should be fine.

Essentially, if it's anything from Core 2 Duo onward you shouldn't have a problem.

What about energy torps? No PD against them.

I really wish i could afford an SSD drive for my PC. At current prices and considering where i live (PCs and laptops are considered "luxury items" and are taxed appropriately) a SSD drive would put me back an entire months paycheque if not more.

If you like those Path of Exile is pretty fun. And it's free.
Grim Dawn is also good.  A sort of Solomon Kane-ish setting with a world being invaded by several flavors of Great Old Ones.  It's not free, but the character advancement system isn't nearly as deep as the one PoE either.

I will through Titan Quest out there also. ARPG in ancient Greece/Egypt/Asia. This  was the first game from the group who went on to make Grim Dawn. You can grab the Anniversary Edition on Steam and elsewhere, it goes on sale regularly.  THQ basically took the full game and prettied it up a bit and removed some bugs.

Using the base AI it feels like to me shields are usually down by the time corvettes charge in and their huge power cost is rough on cruisers. Their average damage is pretty good, but it's slow, and still has the problem of zero tracking.  I've seen people suggest 1 in 4 corvettes with them, and that seems reasonable, but I don't usually pay much attention to my corvette swarm.  I generally just pump out 50-100 depending on the size of my fleet at the time, let them die off over the course of a war or two then remember to refill them.  If I'm going wide I may go as high as 250 corvettes, actually.

Side note about weapons, it's around 50% armor that energy weapons really overtake kinetic, and a similar point where rail/gauss overtakes autocannons (ignoring the incredibly short range on autocannons).  Even so, I have a tendency to use both.  Kinetic battleships/Destroyers and plasma cruisers.  The AI's typical 2 plasma/1 disruptor seems to do a good job, but I only get clever like that when I'm building tall and likely going to be at a numerical disadvantage.  If going wide and likely to have more ships but not necessarily as strong of tech I stick with kinetic or the above kinetic/energy mix assuming that mass firepower will take down shields and fairly quickly the disruptors would just be weaker energy weapons.

Both shields/armor, and weapons tech are about a 10% gain per tier. (red laser to blue, etc weapons in terms of average damage, armor/shields more in terms of effective health ala MMO tanking simming).  This means the guy who went tall and has tier V tech has a corvette worth 120 fleet power, 1 fleet cap, and is (without taking into account attrition, regeneration and some other things) approximately equal to 1.5 tier 1 equipped corvettes that show a fleet power of around 64 and cost 1 fleet cap.

So the guy went tall and pushed tech hard, he's got 12 planets let's say after the 2nd wave of colonization.  The Driven Assimilator started absorbing nearby empires at year 2, had 12 planets at year 10, and is at 40 planets by the time he reaches the opponent.  Researching tier 2 armor will take him 129 months (this happened to me =<  Luckily the next guy I ate gave me Durasteel from his corpse) compared to the 5 months it took the first guy 20 years before they met, but his fleet cap is 4x the other guy.

Now, the thing is, the most important opponent to prepare for, in my opinion, is Fallen Empires.  And they have a good 80% armor on top if decent shields.  So focusing on getting plasma weapons is generally a good way to go.  Several also have decent PD so while missiles are an option, you need to overwhelm them, and at that point anything would work.  I go Kinetic a lot because it works great in the early-mid game vs the other regular empires and then by the time I deal with FE's/AE's I just overpower them by mass, but there are definitely more clever ways to do it.

Preparing for crisis is more about when it arrives.  When it does you decide "do I have enough to steamroll them before they get rolling?"  If yes, do so asap.   If no, hope someone else gets in their way for a bit and change your fleets and upgrade to deal with them depending on what they are.  (Pretty much, as far as I'm concerned: Unbidden, anti-shield fleet, everything else, anti-armor because 'outrange' strategies imo require overwhelming force that will take out a good chunk of the opponent before they close range, and if you have that anything else would have worked)

Final note: Fallen Empires are slightly vulnerable to corvette spam.  You can't do ONLY that, but missile/strikecraft cruisers/battleships and corvette spam works.  Their Battlecruisers and escorts don't have a lot of weapons that can deal with corvettes, and the titans spinal mount can't target them as they fly in circles around them.  Battlships will die, though as they stop dead and the Titan reaches out and touches them in bad ways from across the map, and cruisers don't really go out of the firing arc as much while they circle.  FE PD and other weapons will eat through a corvette swarm if they have no other targets to deal with, but if they do by the time they start in on the corvettes there will be blood in the black water and it'll be too late.  I've had all my heavies drop and 13k of corvettes take down the remaining 40kish of FE fleet before, but I've also tried a full 500 fleet of corvettes and had them torn to pieces by strikecraft and PD mostly before even getting into range.  (Enigma Encoder and Psionic admiral.  It should have been so good. Sooo good...)

ED. I've been farting around near Maia since the Palin CG. Had my gunship sent out and decided to finally add a hanger and hire a pilot. Took the expert and tried High RES in the Aegis system, works great so I head to the HAZ RES. First two outing no problems, made bank on the first and new pilot 30% to Master now. Only ranked Expert in combat myself. Third outing there is not much to pick from other than an Anaconda and two AspX wing.

Finally decide what the hell as they were attacking a T9. I nearly take out the first AspX on one pass and leave it with 3% hull and assign as a target for the fighter. Bumbling FA off maneuver pins me on a rock with all three focused on me for a bit until I orient and kite away one of the Asps flip around and kill it. Shields nearly back up and at least 70% hull left so back for the other two with more incompetent piloting. Between the NPCs being Dangerous and Elite and me bumbling trying to give fighter orders I end up being focused again and have to flee. Managed to fly backward and blow up the last AspX but lost canopy in the process. Now it's me and the slightly damaged Anaconda and a blown Canopy. I have A rated life support so, maybe. Nope, the station is 1,500 ls so I bailed and hit the hanger with 10 minutes of life support. Bounties exceeded repair and restock by only a few thousand credits.
