Once again Trump's desperate need for an applause line to a crowd outruns his ability to deliver.

I bet he didn't mean to use " 's dept " in that sentence.

The island's general obligation bonds plunged to a low of 34 cents on the dollar, according to a CNBC report.

Soros, Buffet, Gates, and Cuban should team up, buy this debt and just write it off.

Could, won't.

Make Mexico pay for that, too.

Find out who owns the debt, and then nuke them.

This isn't hard, people.

Much more likely is Goldman Sachs buying it up for $0.25 and demanding 100 cents on the dollar.

Wiping out Puerto Rico's debt would be good. We should do that.

But Trump said he wanted it so it must be bad.

We could do it as part of the aid package they're going to receive to rebuild, probably make it easier to fit in the budget.

But Trump is racist and hates Puerto Rico so he wouldn't support that except apparently he does. So it must be bad.

Is there anything this man can't fark up?

2017-10-04 10:54:39 AM
It's how he's operated his businesses his whole life long.

Take out immense loans you'll never be able to pay back - take out even more loans on top of that, and then stick it to the banks who were stupid enough to lend to you in the first place by making them write it off in bankruptcy or short-sale.

Puerto Rico is the Trump of US States/Territories.

Eliminate their debt, grant them the statehood they voted for, then rebuild their infrastructure to the national standard. We'll have an economic success story in a couple decades that will count as real economic growth.

Now, now, it would positively un-American to not assess crippling interest to the debt as well.

Trump could start with the 33 million he left PR on the hook for.

I am waiting for "when I said 'we have to eliminate Puerto Rico's debt' I meant Puerto Rico must pay off it's debt as a condition of receiving any federal aid."

As long as there's no potassium benzoate involved, I think it'll be fine.

See, Trump is already wiping that debt out. In couple more days, the bonds will be so cheap, Puerto Rico can call them in for some coconuts and scrap corrugated tin.

This article is about the White House budget director saying it isn't going to happen.

FTFA: "I would not take it word for word," he told CNN. "We are not going to deal with the fundamental difficulties Puerto Rico had before the storm."

You know... it'll be farking hard for a territory to pay off debt when their means of production are destroyed, and their industry will be recovering over years, not months. Tourism is their bread and butter. The reefs will be wrecked, so divers won't visit as much. Their roads, hotels, restaurants... flattened. Seriously, this is stupid.

It's instructive that the President of the United States announced his intention to 'wipe out' a multi-billion dollar debt of a sovereign US territory, and it barely made the headlines because: he said a bunch of stuff even more nutty on the same day; and literally no one believed him at all.

Isn't it funny how Donald Trump's good ideas (this and the 'trillion on infrastructure' thing come to mind) are always, always the ones he's flagrantly lying about?

And it's going to be a lot harder for Puerto Rico to do that, now that their ability to borrow has been goddamned decimated by Trump's unthinking, flippant pandering.

Which, to be honest, could have been Trump's intent. This will teach Puerto Rico to make him look bad...

Trump will wipe out Puerto Rico's debt, right after he repeals and replaces Obamacare with a plan that covers everybody, makes Wall Street pay their fair share, and makes Mexico pay for the wall.

This is the worst part of having a maniac for a president. Even in those rare moments where Trump's insanity actually threatens to accidentally do something good, he's surrounded by nefarious assholes to make sure it doesn't happen.

What about the Kochs and the Waltons?  Buffet and Gates are already on track to donate their entire fortunes to humanitarian causes.   Hell, why not have a windfall tax on the top 1% and use it to do all the shiat you should be doing (education, infrastructure, research).

The level of spite I see out of Trump stuns me. Truly, he's like a kid who never stopped throwing temper tantrums. I haven't seen that level of mood changes and sulking in many over the age of 12.

Yeah, trump just said it to get a cheap applause line. That's it, nothing more. He doesn't really care.

If he actually follows up on this and makes an effort I'll change my tune, but I think we all know he's already forgotten about this promise.
