You know I wouldn't be surprised if Trump let Puerto Rico disintegrate for a while until folks are forced to sell their land for pennies on the dollar then buy up the land for another Trump brand eyesore.  Then the rebuilding would start.

Maybe if they promised to build Trump a casino on the island that would fail within five years after construction was completed because Trump used the casino's money to pay his personal debts (and none of the contractors were paid and had to seek out relief in court and/or the ones that were paid took what they could which was much less Trump promised he'd pay them for building his casino).

Puerto Rico is a conquered territory from the Spanish American war.

They aren't an occupied territory, as they were formally annexed like Hawaii and the Philippines were, but unlike Hawaii they aren't a State as they haven't been admitted into the Union by Congress, and unlike the Philippines they weren't later given independence.

So they fall under Federal jurisdiction, and are governed by old treaties and a century of band aides, and that will continue until they are admitted or go their own way.

Prior to the gold rush, Alaska had 32,000 people.

We complain about Wyoming (536,000 people) being overrepresented in Congress. Imagine the howling if gold-less Alaska got three votes?

drxym: People lost their shiat when they saw Katrina wreck New Orleans and FEMA botch recovery. Yet the situation in Puerto Rico is arguably even worse. Where is the outcry?

Because it's not being botched.  Sure, Trump is an idiot of apocalyptic proportions, but this isn't currently being botched in any measurable way. There are 4,000 Army reserve members that have been deployed there for search and rescue, and a stream of boats and planes have been arriving carrying food, supplies, generators, and tons of clean water.  Officials have been surveying the island, and funding is being released.  It took the government 4 days to get water to the stadium in New Orleans.  The response here is orders of magnitude better.

It's not getting as much front page coverage as it should, because people are more focused on who's kneeling during a farking football game (our illustrious Commander-in-Peach among them).  But reasonable progress is being made, given the enormity of the crisis.
