We already covered this;

- become a decent human being
- show compassion
- show humility
- work for the common good
- tell the truth
- think
etc.

If the Trump effect means right wing loonies only get 13 and a fraction percent in the election then we could use some of that here in the US.

It's worth remembering that when the right wing loonies won in Germany it wasn't even with a sizable plurality. They played on the fractured left and knew that as long as the intellectual center and the socialists were busy fighting each other they'd be powerless to stop the goose stepping jack-arfs from stealing the show.

All this rise of white nationalism, heck just plain old jingoism, reminds me of The Wave. But instead of the "hey we're cool, we belong to something, we're fitting in", it's skipped that step and just gone with "let's get our hate on".

The students in the movie wondered how anyone could get swept up in the hate... the bigots today, they're already there. Just call yourselves Nazis and be done with it.

2017-09-25 12:55:54 AM
I take it the "Trump effect" is the fact that his Presidency has put the brakes on the rise of far-right movements in Europe since he's been President?

2017-09-25 12:57:22 AM
That was a lot of stupid to unpack. Merkel won because sane Germans think Trump is a toxic tit. America refuses to learn from tragedy and horror, so it's nice to see that Germans don't rewrite history to make the bad guys cuddly.

I blame Russia. The only way that they can effectively portray themselves as being in a position of strength is to drag everyone else down to their level, and frankly I'm sick of it. You can accuse me of scapegoating or using a strawman argument to place the blame on them but at the end of the day they still vehemently support the genocidal regime of Assad in Syria and that is as wrong as wrong can be.

I too am drinking.

There's something to this analysis, though not for the reasons Moody gives.

The AfD's support was greatest among men living in the former GDR, whose living standards never caught up with those of western Germans, and many of whom never got over the shock of the Wall coming down and having to live in a globalized and increasingly multicultural united Germany.

That's one way of reading it. Another way would be to look at where the Nazis polled best before 1933. Turns out that was in what was then central Germany. Many of the men of historic central Germany have a taste for xenophobia and illiberal government, it seems.

What I'd like to see is whether AfD support was mostly among lower-income east Germans (east Germans can't compete in united Germany, something Berlin can try to address) or was strong among all income classes (men from historic central Germany are just racist assholes, and Berlin will do well to ignore their tantrums).

2017-09-25 01:10:33 AM
Did Fox just admit that Nazism is a right-wing philosophy?

"By winning 13 percent of the vote in Sunday's federal elections, the AfD will, for the first time, send avowedly right-wing politicians to the German Bundestag - a shocking turn of events in a country that, even 70 years later, wrestles with its Nazi past."

Technically, this is the effect of the PNAC neocons during the Dubbya years and the Obama administration, who started numerous wars in the Middle East and triggered the migration waves towards Europe.

Trump has, for the moment, little to take credit for. But then, if he manages to bring the dream of Mr. McCain to  barbra ann to fruition, then he may yet wrestle the prize from his predecessors.

2017-09-25 01:28:19 AM
So, the "Trump Effect" means 87% of German voters did not vote for fascist AfD?
Or does it mean almost 40% voted for center left/left wing/green parties?

They should be so lucky.

After seeing a feckless 8 years of Obummer and its results, Europe is starting to remove its collective head from its ass.

Or conversely, watch CNN or network news, and pretty much do the exact opposite of what their 'pundits' say.

From another piece on the Fox Opinion site (off-topic, but I'm too lazy to submit it as a thread):

Judge Jeanine Pirro: NFL players taking a knee, Commissioner Roger Goodell, shame on all of you

And a neuropathologist examining the brains of 111 NFL players found 110 to have CTE aka "chronic traumatic encephalopathy" the degenerative disease linked to repeated blows to the head.
Instead of mouthing off about how you are a force for good, Roger, maybe you ought to get ready to reveal damaging information when the lawsuits start. Think Aaron Hernandez.

http://www.foxnews.com/opinion/2017/09/24/judge-jeanine-pirro-nfl-players-taking-knee-commissioner-roger-goodell-shame-on-all.html

So, she thinks that the NFL should be ashamed of the injuries, but she's blissfully unaware or willfully ignorant of the fact that Trump complained about the new rules that are supposed to cut down on injuries?

Nazis rose to power via hyperinflation. The Iranian Revolution was about economic problems. Economics do play a good share in these rises.

That's kind of what I was reading between the lines through the whole article too. The far right zealots are surging everywhere, even in a society that knows where this shiat leads.

And a lot of other countries too.

Conservatives, regardless of country, are ever the "fix old, no new" party.  Their entire schtick is to keep the status quo, weirdo.

I thought it was dramatic how short a jump they had in the article for a Fox oppinion column.

Trump! = AfD = Nazis

At one point, they even stated that the AfD discriminates and is prejudiced against Muslims.

The only question that remains: Did this slip through whatever passed for quality control over there, or is drawing parity to literal Nazis now step the Fox editorial board wants to take?

Voters were fine with the 'status quo'. Even if you ignore what we now know about Russia's interference on behalf of the GOP, It was the broken-ass electoral college that gave Trump the seat.

Just like the last time a President won the electoral college but lost the popular vote, Trump's presidency is a disaster and it's only gonna get worse while right-wing troglodytes bury their heads in their own asses and pretend everything's great.
