AfD is particularly strong in parts of ex-communist eastern Germany - yet the biggest concentrations of immigrants are not in those areas

http://www.bbc.com/news/world-europe-37274201

They are the "invisible" ethnic minority that could help the rightwing populist Alternative für Deutschland become the third biggest party at Germany's federal elections this weekend, yet has been largely ignored by the country's biggest political parties.

An estimated 1.4 million to 4 million native Russian-speakers live in Germany, many of them descendants of 18th and 19th-century German emigres who returned and were granted citizenship after the collapse of the Soviet Union.

With Moscow and German far-right parties actively courting this diaspora community,a new initiative now aims to re-engage voters who have become disillusioned with western democracy.

Since March, the state-backed Federal Association of Russian-speaking Parents (BVRE), has been organising panel discussions with politicians from all major parties - naturally in Russian.

...

The AfD is the only party which has gone out of its way to court the vote of native Russian speakers in Germany. As early as last autumn, it handed out Russian-language flyers ahead of local elections in Berlin and in August a leading figure of its nationalist wing organised a "Russia conference" in Magdeburg, at which speakers warned of a coming "Islamic invasion" and praised Vladimir Putin.

One recent survey, by a foundation set up in the name of the late Russian opposition leader Boris Nemtsov, found that the majority of Germany's Russian-speaking minority had more trust in Russian sources than German media, even if they were fluent in both languages.

What really bothers me is that whole slogan is actually a bash on the state.  Like, you want to tell me I suck so I should vote for you?!

TheDarkSaintOfGin: so once again, we're shown another country is smarter than us

Germans tend to trust their media more than we trust ours, and use social media less than we do, so Russian fake news doesn't have such a high impact on public opinion.

We need to be more like Germany. They're setting a good example for how to do civics right.

AfD wins battle for eastern German men
Look at this snapshot of analysis by public broadcaster ZDF: it shows that the right-wing nationalist AfD was the preferred party for men in the former East Germany. Some 27% of men in eastern Germany backed AfD - three points ahead of the CDU and well ahead of the other parties

simon wilson @siwilso
Huge split in #AfD vote in former East/West. Per @ARD prediction 21.5% in former East, 11% in former West.

They knew Merkel was going to remain in power, the question was whether the neo-nazis would get a place in the government.  To quote one local, "We might not be able to ignore them if they do."

I still think its a bit hyperbolic to  be freaking out that they're going nationalistic... especially considering how concious of their history they are.

Now, the US on the other hand, is more concerning

2017-09-24 01:50:54 PM
It's not just the U.S.:

22% of the German vote today is going to the neo-Nazis and the ex-Communists -- two parties who no one will ever let into their government.

The SPD going "and ... we're out" diving in front of the AfD as opposion leaders is probably the coolest thing they have done in ... two decades or though.

last time the nazis got into a government n the state level (2004, 9% of the votes in one state) , Germany was collectively ashamed. This sadly won't be the case this time

@US: farking thanks for that. Could you stop bombing/destabilizing entire regions or if you do, at least take in the refugees? if we hadn't taken in one or twomillion, this election would have looked normal. now the farking nazis are back

AfD allegedly up to 27% among east german males. That is indeed pretty terrifying. Not sure how many "I don't even like the AfD but at least it's not the others"* voters are among those. I don't want to think about the actual Neo-Nazis.

*there is no cure for being dumb as a rock

Still lolling about the reactions of Greens and FDP when confronted with the reality of having to govern together (under Merkel). The "Yay!" --> "Eh Gads."  faces after the results and the SPD taking its ball was priceless.
