Yes for a summer and it was incredibly boring. Money was good until you broke it down by the hours you work and it was always a feast or famine situation I can't believe people tough it out for a career. We had some guys that had been doing it for decades but their whole life was hustling cars every birthday and funeral and weekend BBQ was a networking event. That's the only way to make a go of it though if you are waiting for people to walk on the lot you can have days without even a single person showing up.

Never been in sales, but I'm that guy that salesmen hate. I brought a laptop to a dealership and caught them in a lie on the contract math. I had an F&I guy gritting his teeth because I didn't buy any of his upcharge stuff and didn't finance with them. It was his first day and he had to stay over an hour past closing to finish my paperwork. I had a GSM try to tell me I was sneaky because I didn't disclose my Carmax offer on the trade-in, so he ended up coming lower on the car than he wanted to . Boo-farking-hoo. I caught a Ford salesman trying to poach a sale.

I could go on. I've bought cars in '04, '05, '06, '08, '09, 2013, 2015, and 2016 (between my wife and myself). I've sold three cars to Carmax and had a dealer match the Carmax offer on a fourth. But Carmax and Telsa were the easiest - no haggle, no whining or pressure when I presented my USAA pre-arranged financing. Costco/USAA/Truecar is the way to go if you want new though since, like Carmax, it's a simple price sheet and an internet salesman who knows his commissions and just wants to close quickly.

I've got USAA too, but haven't used them for car-buying yet...I used my local credit union. Got my last two cars through Carmax and was very happy with both deals. No BS. First was a hardtop Miata, and they priced it like a regular one, so I got a $1000 part for free because its not their bread and butter Camry and they just wanted to sell it quick. Second was a Mazda3. Excellent deal. Would do another.

I worked at a Harley-Davidson dealership for two years in college. But I didn't sell bikes. I worked in parts and accessories. I did everything from getting repair orders and geting the right parts to the mechanics in the shop to folding t-shirts. I liked the job because I had cool co-workers, especially an English girl from Nottingham, who taught me a lot of "English" that you never really learned as an American before the internet.

The guys who sold bikes didn't have to be creepy or "I need to talk to my manager" because our clientele had money. Our inventory was published in catalogs and on the fledgling internet, so customers knew what was available. Some bikes were already customized and some were ready to be customized. There was no haggling. Soft tails were around $24,000. Customized bikes were $30-50K. And this was in the 90s. But our dealership was one of the few where you didn't have to get on a waiting list for the bike you wanted. Some clients we flew in and picked them up at the airport in Phoenix, they'd buy their bike on their credit card, and leave on their new bike.

Besides my boss being a little man with a Napoleon complex, I really liked my job. After 2 years and completely redesigning the layout of the clothes and accessories section, I asked him for a $1.00 raise (because rent was going up), and he gave me shiat for 20 minutes. I went home, wrote my letter of "fark you, I politely resign," gave it to him the next day, and walked out.

CapitalOne sent me an e-mail saying I could apply for a car loan. This was barely 2 years after a bankruptcy and in 2007. I was like, "PSSHH. Sure, at 23.99% interest." I had a few drinks and decided, "Why the hell not?" So I filled out the online information, most of which they already had. I get an e-mail back the next day saying that I was approved and they were sending me a check to fill out for up to $25,000, at a term of 60 months, at 6% interest. Holy sh*t!

I knew I wanted a Scion tC, so I got on Edwards.com and used their service for dealer offers. I got 3 personal e-mails within 2 days. I was most impressed with Scott Toyota (in Scottsdale) because the woman said she was the fleet dealer, Scion doesn't do haggle pricing, and she would try to make the process as painless and quick as possible. I called her and set up an appointment, went to the dealership, walked right past the vultures who were circling and approaching me, and straight into the building to ask for the fleet manager who was waiting for me with two sets of keys -- one for an automatic and one for a manual, both in the color I said I wanted. And I really liked the saleswoman. She wasn't pushy or aggressive. I chose the automatic, she drew up the paperwork, and I wrote a check for $19,XXX dollars after taxes and registration. I was in and out in less than 90 minutes and got a great car that I loved.

It was the absolute best way to buy a new car. No talking with the finance dickhead, no haggling with an aggressive frat boy in a collared shirt. It was great.

We bought a car in July. I caught the salesman at the local dealership in two really dumb lies and the dealership advertising in one really big one.

We drove three and a half hours to a different state and bought the same vehicle loaded for $3k less than the local basic model.

If he hadn't lied to us, I wouldn't have looked for the same model that far away.

We bought ours in a similar way. I sent the sales manager a list of the cars that I wanted to test drive and the time that I'd be there.
When we arrived, the cars were lined up for the test drives, we chose the one we wanted, and left.
No stress!

Car dealers are predatory jerkasses. They have to be, because when you're in a competitive environment and you work on commission, everything is about screwing the buyer for as many dollars as you can. There's a reason buying a car involves considering the service package, financing through the dealer, payment plan, trade-in, and so on. The more they can complicate it beyond a set price, the more they can sucker buyers into paying extra for the product either immediately or over the long term. That's how you get people in cars they can't afford, paying them off for five years and ultimately paying twice what they should have.

I get that people have to sell things. I've sold things for a living. But I wouldn't have been able to stomach it if the price changed depending on who the buyer was and how much I thought I could soak them for.

Spend the $30 on a financial calculator and learn how to calculate your own payment. Had a sales manager put the same numbers into his "program" and he came up with a wildly different number - almost $100/mo more. He wasn't happy w/ me.

All grown up and ready for the world, at seventeen years old I hit the road. Wound up in small town middle Georgia. First job there was at a used car lot on the only road going through town, washing cars and turning wrenches. One day the owner sent me with some tow truck guy to pick up a car the next county over. My job was simple. Make sure nothing went wrong. It did.

I was guiding him as he backed the tow truck. About a foot after telling him to stop, he did, crushing the spoiler on a supposedly "only fourteen in the U.S." car. Needless to say, boss was none too happy. Called me aside, asked my version of the disaster. The truth; it did not set me free.

Later that afternoon I was walking past the open window of his office and overheard him on the phone with whomever and heatedly telling them that (my first name) was definitely paying to have it repaired! Me, I was making minimum wage and had as little to my name as a seventeen year old might.

I finished replacing the thermostat, flushing the radiator, and the fan belt on the Gran Torino I'd been working on that day. Never said a word to him about what I overheard, walked away that evening and never went back.

About six months later our paths crossed. He asked why I disappeared. I explained why. That's when I learned that said tow truck driver and I shared the same first name.

Never worked at one myself but when I was a teen several of my friends did.  Parking cars, washing cars just simple minimum wage teenage stuff.  The stories of shenanigans they would tell.  Especially when they were sent on errands in dealership cars.  Oh the burnouts, donuts and basically treating the car like a $2 rented mule.  One time they had burned out the tires so much two of them went flat in an abandoned neighborhood under development.  They had a spare but had to call the dealership to bring out another wheel and tire.  Can't remember if they got in trouble for that one.

Interesting that most of these are domestic dealerships. I wonder if it's the same at foreign dealerships too. I suppose it is.

For almost 20 years, we'd been a  Toyota household. (I still get dreamy over our '79 Corolla.) So, in the mid 90s, we went to the local Toyota dealer to trade the old one in and get another. For some reason, Toyota was on a Lease kick. That was how the salesmen made their boodle. No sales. Leases. They took the key -- the way they do -- to inspect our trade-in. (We faultlessly maintain our cars. Always have.)  Then,  they refused to give it back. We had to listen to their lease spiel. Over and over again. I asked for the key back and it was held just out of reach. Like a game. Little by little, my meekness was overcome and when I told them I was going to leave, car-less, and call the police we got the key back and went over to Saturn and bought a car in 15 minutes.

The reason this is mentioned in this thread is our "sales pitch" at Toyota had attracted a knot of other salesmen who had gathered around to see how this one played out. I hadn't heard of Glengarry Glen Ross before then, but I have since come to see our session as that boiler room atmosphere in action. It looked uncannily like the footage I've seen of a contest between a cobra and a mongoose.

Note: I actually don't know if the Lease promotion was local or company-wide. I think a huge powerful corporation deserves the deference implied by that.

I went to a local Kia dealer once to look at the Sportage.
They were going to give me an estimate on the trade in of my current vehicle so they took my registration and keys and off they went while I test drove the new car.  When I came back from the test drive they gave me the estimate for the trade in (way too low - surprise) so I asked for my keys and registration back so that I could move on.  It turns out the guy who did the evaluation kept my registration and went home for the day.  I had to wait a half hour for them to finally get in touch with him and then another hour for him to come back to the dealership with my registration.
Then there was the time I bought a new Ford Escape from a local dealer.  They called the next day to inform me that the car I bought was already sold but that they could get another one like it 3 hours away. I asked to speak to the General Manager to ask how a dealership can sell an already sold car.  He had already been made away of what happened to me and replied "Look - you either want the other vehicle or you don't!"  I told them I would take it but that it was to be put on a vehicle transport truck and not driven back to the local dealership as I should not have to buy a vehicle with additional mileage because of their error. They said ok.
I picked up the vehicle two days later.  It had the extra mileage on it as it was driven down from the other dealer.

I also was wondering if this person was the shrewd car trader they were portraying themselves as. Sounded more like buying a lot of lemons on their last legs.

Depends on the area.  In the midwest / rocky mountain region where nasty hailstorms are, Insurance companies will total out a vehicle for cosmetic damage.  Lots of people take that money and buy new cars.

A fair question. No, it isn't typical of Americans, I think most keep their cars 6 years at a minimum,  and no accidents either,  but I enjoy new things every few years, especially the early 2000s when I was fresh out of college.

I bought a car this year on the phone from a couple of states away. The one dealer offered me $2,000 for my trade. I only wanted $6,000 and the rough trade-in value was around $7,600, but the assholes treated it like it was some sort of joke so I ended up buying a different car.

The best part is that they ended up lowering their asking price by $4,000, which meant if they hadn't been assholes they would have had a sale as I was ready to drive down and pick it up.

I only wanted $6,000 and the rough trade-in value was around $7,600, but the assholes treated it like it was some sort of joke so I ended up buying a different car.

The best part is that they ended up lowering their asking price by $4,000, which meant if they hadn't been assholes they would have had a sale as I was ready to drive down and pick it up.


I always calculate a fair price for my trade in and a fair price for the car I want to buy and when they start asking me what I want for the trade, I tell the salesman that I don't care what the individual numbers are, just what the difference is. If you demand a specific trade in value, they will just pad the new car price and vice versa.

I had an F&I guy gritting his teeth because I didn't buy any of his upcharge stuff and didn't finance with them. I had a GSM try to tell me I was sneaky because I didn't disclose my Carmax offer on the trade-in, so he ended up coming lower on the car than he wanted to . Boo-farking-hoo. I could go on. I've bought cars in '04, '05, '06, '08, '09, 2013, 2015, and 2016 (between my wife and myself). I've sold three cars to Carmax and had a dealer match the Carmax offer on a fourth. But Carmax and Telsa were the easiest - no haggle, no whining or pressure when I presented my USAA pre-arranged financing. Costco/USAA/Truecar is the way to go if you want new though since, like Carmax, it's a simple price sheet and an internet salesman who knows his commissions and just wants to close quickly.

Seven cars in 12 years? Is that normal for the US? Or do you and your wife get into an inordinate number of crashes?

I also was wondering if this person was the shrewd car trader they were portraying themselves as. Sounded more like buying a lot of lemons on their last legs.


A few new cars, a lease, and the rest a few years old for better value. I just like to change cars for the variety.

I bought my pickup in the early days of the interwebs; Carmax, I think, in 1999 or so. No haggling; just showed up, signed the papers, and took the thing. Still have the truck. I'm a buy-and-hold person; it meets my needs and I'm not out to impress anyone.

Bought a used one (1 year old), btw. Too cheap to pay the premium for a new model.

I hate dealerships. Bought my last 2 cars through internet sales or by making a phone call and STILL got f'kd with.

First was a Honda... Red 4-door manual Civic Si.  Nobody wanted a sedan, especially red in a manual.  A few dealers just emailed the sticker price for the car (which was about 24k), but the one that was a bit out of the way came back with 19.4. My credit was excellent, I pre-qualified for a killer promotional near-zero interest loan over the phone, and then the bullshiat started in the F&I office.

They tried to yo-yo finance me. I get to the section of the contract that deals with the dealership's "right of rescisson" on the contract if they can't get financing, and X'd it out/refused to initial it. They said I had to initial. I told them to show me proof of the loan approval. They wouldn't. So I walked, screaming at the manager the whole way out the door in front of a bunch of customers (not my best moment, but I'd already spent a lot of time ensuring I wouldn't get dicked around). Went to lunch, called a friend who pretended to be some news channel's "on your side" investigative team. They called me back within the hour and the deal was done.

3 years later some a-hole runs a light and totals that car. Insurance paid about $3k under what I bought it for new, and I got injured so there was a settlement.

Next car was one of only 200 made in a specific color and configuration.  I had to have it.  Local dealers were marking it up $7k+ over sticker.  So I called a dealer 100 miles away and told the sales guy if he didn't dick with me, I'd drive up that day and buy the car immediately if he promised to keep me out of the F&I office. Quickest sale that guy ever made. F&I had to do some of the paperwork for registration and all that, and I told her point blank in front of the sales guy if she tried to sell me anything other than the car I was writing a check for, I'd walk. Even if they'd already added it to the car. It worked.

Wasn't always that easy... when I was younger and had shiat credit or no money, I got bent over pretty good. Life teaches you things.

I remember when I was 19 and needed a car, I told my roommate and he called his Dad to come visit. Hs Dad sold cars on the weekends to help a buddy with a dealership. We went to Hyundai, he pointed at 2 Elantras and said I could have white or silver, then he called the salesman over. They went to do paperwork and numbers, all I said was I want $200 payments and GAP coverage. I don't know what he said, or how he said it, but I got my new car with $1k down, and $229 payments. Salesman looked at my friends Dad like he was the biggest asshole ever, but handed me my keys and said enjoy your car. Had my car for 9 years before my husband said enough. Loved that damn Hyundai, and still send my friends Dad an Xmas card.
