Yeah, looks like a fungal pattern of growth. Lots of fungi propagate with powdery spores.

I like that they tell the parents that their children are perfectly safe, despite not having the slightest clue what they're dealing with.

Yea mushroom fairy ring was my first thought when I saw the photo. Possibly purple-spored puffball which occasionally forms rings and is, you know, purple.

Next in the news: People are terrified by sudden appearance of round, brownish, hard-shelled objects which appear on the ground near a tree. "Nobody put them there! Security cameras saw no people at all! They just fell from the sky!"

About 20 years ago I dumped some of that on the snow to see what would happen.  A few days later we had some crazy winds and everything for a few hundred yards was dyed magenta.

Yup. I manage condos owned predominantly by seasonal city slickers, and the condo board started freaking out about lichen growing on and killing their trees.

I explained it wasn't the lichen, but inadequate sunlight and poor water drainage from the building being built over swampy grassland with an inadequate drainage plan as seen by the standing water in many of the crawl spaces and overflowing retention ponds.

But what do I know? Call an arborist they say. They ended up wasting half my day, and the Associations money for someone else to tell them the same thing.

I don't even remember what the article was about, but I feel less frustrated. So thanks for reading this rant.

I skimmed TFA.  Didn't say anything like I expected.

Because this was found on the grass, in the morning...  I'm gonna go with fungus.

There are more species of that stuff than the mind can conceive of.  And the spores can arrive in locations improbably and seemingly out of nowhere.  And yes, they can easily be mistaken for a sort of powder.
