So I don't know what outcome to root for

There is a democrat in the race but ole Roy is running strong.

"The president is extremely popular here. His approval numbers are in the mid-80s among Republicans," said Blake Harris, a Republican strategist in the state. "Even more, he's got a record of drawing huge crowds in this state - so a visit could definitely make a difference in what is predicted to be a pretty low-turnout election."

Gee, I wonder what could contribute to this

2017-09-18 10:44:04 AM
So, things could go from Strange to stranger?

/or more to the point: strangest

Well this will be highly entertaining.

spongeboob: So I don't know what outcome to root for

All things considered, I'm rooting for Moore because it would encourage primary challenges. The more money and energy the Republicans have to spend on themselves, the less they'll have for Democrats in the general.

Trump: Strange Love, Strange Highs and Strange Lows. Strange love, that's how my love goes. Strange love, will you give it to me?

Trump endorsed Strange before the first round of voting on Aug. 15. But with polls showing the race slipping away, the president for weeks refused to commit to holding a campaign-style rally for Strange. On Saturday, though, Trump announced on Twitter that he would travel to the state just days before voters cast their ballots.

Most peculiar.

Philosophically there's no real difference between Strange and Moore. They're both bending over backwards to court the Trumper vote, so the tangible loss of getting Moore in the Senate is dwarfed by the benefit of forcing millions of GOP dollars spent to defend incumbents.

2017-09-18 11:53:32 AM
Republicans: you did this to yourselves. You convinced millions of people that their lazy, uneducated opinions were not just worthwhile but dominant over those formed by careful reason and examination of evidence. You fomented a raging insurrection based almost entirely around the idea that the loudest, most angry, and most obstinate voices are those we need as elected officials. You redirected criticism based on legitimate grievances towards "the other" in order to continue your ride on the gravy train.

I guess what I'm trying to say is STFU and GBTW.

2017-09-18 11:55:11 AM
On the one hand, Strange is endorsed by Trump, so I don't want him to win.

On the other hand, Moore is endorsed by his evil gawd to make America into an evangelical theocracy, so I don't want him to win.

/My vote is going for a meteor

I'm  rooting for Roy Moore because having him in the Senate will be the easiest source of fund-raising for the Democratic Party that we've had since...well, Donald Trump, frankly.

This is the same thinking that led to Trump in the Oval Office.

In many of those parts of the country, they will happily elect a (much more) extreme Republican over the well-funded Democrat. Trump proved that if your message is racist enough, the media will happily provide the free coverage your campaign can't afford.

2017-09-18 12:36:36 PM
That may be the end result, but if he loses it will have nothing to do with Mitch McConnell.

It's because nobody likes Strange and even many Republicans believe there was a quid pro quo with ex-Governor Bentley.

And, it's a special election with very low turnout - anything can happen.

2017-09-18 12:41:10 PM
President Donald Trump's decision Saturday to intervene in the Alabama special election followed weeks of pleas from senior Republicans who fear that a loss would invite a wave of primary challenges against GOP incumbents and damage the party in the 2018 midterms.

oh is backing a f*cking moron gonna backfire on you now?

who saw that coming

Irrational brain: God, I hope this psychopath wins and makes Trump, McConnell and the Establishment look stupid and out of touch.

Hey, they've gotten lots done.  Tax cuts, gerrymandering, diluting majority rule, stopping affordable health care, designing the end of net neutrality, getting rid of those nasty thou-shalt-not-pollute laws, reducing law suit liability for the 1%... See? They've done a lot!

2017-09-18 12:48:31 PM
I'm expecting some Trump-approved primary challenges anyway. Whichever guy strokes his ego best that day he'll support and if that's not it then see if he's getting "Wins" from the Republicans or if he's trying to punish them. It'll be... interesting.

I get your reasoning but don't agree. If even some of those crazy primary candidates win, the people constantly trying to take the government hostage grow more influential in Congress.

But it also means that Republicans will suck all the oxygen out of the room and shut Democrats out of the news cycle. It's exactly what happened in the 2016 presidential election.

Well, yeah, if it wasn't Alabama, theoretically, the Democratic candidate Jones could win the seat. And recent polls have him statistically tied with either GOP nominee. I know it seems unlikely and outlandish, but Democrats can't make progress in red states unless we start seriously running in them, and supporting those who do.

/I see all the straight white people in this thread graciously willing to accept a virulent racist and homophobe in the Senate in order to score political points. Thanks, guys.

No result of the Alabama election is good. Although to me the worst is if Moore wins, because fark him with a Ten Commandments monument. But seriously, every outcome sucks.

So all I can do is hope for the outcome that has the most strife for the GOP. Whichever that is.

/Occasionally I can give into spite, sure.

it also keeps him out an Administration post.

No matter how ignorant and backwards he sounds, he'll simply be a single constant republican vote, which is what any republican senator from a slave state will be.
