Some things should be sacrosanct, and Calvin and Hobbes is one of them.  In this darkest timeline, can't we keep just one little place in our imaginations of sweet, innocent, refuge?

That was bad, and you should feel bad. Like I do for laughing at that....

ModernLuddite: Is anyone here knowledgeable about the subject at hand, and can recommend books or websites about the phenomena of people (okay, men) who fall in love with inanimate objects (okay, sex dolls)? I find the idea fascinating and sad in equal measure.

I do find it kinda interesting that this is something that is generally restricted to men. Especially considering that the ones who society pushes towards playing with dolls/dress-up are women. Is it because guys can get off with a doll and women can't really (can they? I've never even seen a sex doll for women... do they exist?). Once there are actual sex robots, will we see parity?

NOBODY is "totally fine"...and that's according to the DSM.  We're all somewhere on some spectrum or other.

I've met more quack shrinks than competent ones in the course of my legal career...got one's license yanked, in fact...so I'd prefer it if society directed the scarce good ones toward people who REALLY need help; ie, the suicidal and violent.

There's a vast gulf between married with two kids, and believing a doll is alive.

He's taken refuge in a delusion, presumably because he's lonely. Does he know it's a delusion? How would he react in a real world situation? If he fell and hurt himself badly, would he call an ambulance or would he ask the doll to do it?

Love is a complex thing.

I love my classic car. I love pasta (unfortunately). I still love (and to be pedantic, I'm still in love with) my late wife and I always will. None are or ever will be capable of loving me back. So, I don't find it terribly disturbing. A love doll isn't my thing (yet), so while I find it different, to each his (or her) own.

Why (mostly) men. My theory. A woman, no matter how unattractive, can get a guy if she wants one. He might be a bottom of the barrel ugly loser, but she can get someone. For guys, even a hooker can say no if they choose (and that's only sex, not love). You put 50 men and 50 women in a bar, and any woman who leaves alone leaves alone by choice. Guys, most who leave alone do so because they have no choice but to leave alone. Again, not love, but it's at least the seed that can let love bloom.

I think he probably is hurting himself. He's turned his back on reality for something more comforting, and that doesnt always end well. Just look at John Hinckley.

Anyway, he's not currently hurting anyone else, and if he is doing himself harm it's not in a way that we can easily detect.

I'm absolutely not advocating for any action being taken.

We'll have to agree to disagree.

That was hard to watch. Because that's a human being who has become so lonely, so deprived of human intimacy, that he's had to imprint it onto an inanimate object to feel the kind of connection he craves. I'm not into the doll thing. It creeps me out, but I identify with what might have driven him there.

We all want another person to love us unconditionally warts, weird smells, and all; yet so very, very, very few of us get that. Most of us can cope, some of us can't.

Tell that to thousands of men and women living in monasteries and nunneries.

Now that's an interesting question.  Honestly, I care more about, say, my car than I do about any random million strangers on the planet.  My car being stolen would bother me more than learning about a plague in, say, China.

Perhaps that's wrong of me, but I'd expect the average person in China to feel the same way, frankly...it's the way we're wired.
