I'm curious if Apple got the facial recognition down. Android has had that for years, and it's always sucked ass. I heard that it failed a few times during the demo, which isn't a good sign if that's true.

I'm perfectly happy with my Galaxy S5 because it's the last Samsung with a replaceable battery and Android lets me use FoxFi so I can turn my phone into a wireless hotspot with my ancient unlimited/unthrottled Verizon data plan. Apple doesn't let you do that. F*ck 'em.

I just upgraded my old Galaxy S6 to the S7 Edge for $10 per month by switching to Sprint, and I couldn't be happier.   I've been an Android guy as long as I can remember, and I fully intend on continuing that trend.  Fark a thousand-dollar iPhone.

Galaxy S3, represent. It still works and absolutely no new development has enticed me to upgrade.

I have no particular objection to iOS - I really like my iPad, but I have other priorities when it comes to my phone. I don't game on it, so I don't need a huge amount of power.

Outside of calls, texts, email and routine internet functions the most I demand of it is the occasional photo or video. Mainly it serves as a podcast delivery mechanism and one thing - the ability to expand storage with a micro-SD - is something I really appreciate. There's plenty on the market that can do what I want for much less than $1200.

I recently got a ZTE Android phone for free (Thanks, Obama!). My first ever smartphone. I've sent one text message so far. It was one sentence that took me almost 20 minutes to type. It's been gathering dust ever since.

Sadly my S4 is approaching the limits of its abilities, mostly due to me hacking around with it, and not due to the phone itself. There's some kind of godawful memory leak on the thing and the stock rom is broken. Planning to upgrade to an S7 or S8 soon and then not again for hopefully a full decade.

We have a friendly rivalry at work between the android guys and the iPhone guys. When I bought my S8, I asked them if they wanted to see what the next iPhone was going to be like.

You're going to have to take it to somebody to replace the battery periodically unless you're really handy and have surgeon's hands.

I paid for an unlocked iPhone 7 from Apple. Plan to keep it another 2 years, sell it, and buy whatever is new. Figure 3 years, then the battery starts not lasting long enough.

My S4 is just ducky, but then I'm not on the stock ROM.

I'm going to update it to Lineage one of these days.

It is actually a 7 Plus, and one of the main reasons I bought it was the 2x optical zoom camera.

Not only all of this, but I'd like to add that I don't want the ever-increasing form factor. I bought a 5s instead of 6 because even the smallest 6 was too damn big.

/and I'm sure as hell not paying a grand for a phone, no matter how many bells and whistles it has.

Even if you're gaming, what do you think the differences are?

I had a play with Clash of Clans on my iPad. It was fine. I hated that it's a free/pay game and would have liked to just pay £5 and play, but there we are. But that game is really no better than say, Total Annihilation which I ran on a Pentium 2. You'd comfortably run it on a phone that's a few years old.

And no-one really invests in phone games. No-one is making amazing huge games for it, because it just doesn't suit it. You can't have all the inputs of a Wolfenstein or Quake game, or the massive screen or the detail. And people just don't get stuck into gaming on one. It suits things like Ballz and Angry Birds. And those are fun games, but there's no power demand for them.

I really don't understand why anyone is sinking this sort of money into phones. It's such a "done" technology at this point. A better camera? Are you taking photos for Vogue? No, you're hanging out in a cafe with your pals. And camera phone photos still suck compared to even compact digital cameras. A £150 phone will still give you a Facebook-suitable shot. Spend $500 on a dSLR and go and take some really beautiful photos.

Really, phones suck at everything. They do everything quite badly. That's why I don't spend money. It's far better gaming and browsing on a laptop. Photos on a dSLR. Music from an old iPod or a Sansa Clip. Reading on a Kindle. Which isn't to say that a phone isn't useful. It is. But it's the option when you can't carry some of that stuff. You spend decent money on a dSLR, you won't be throwing it away in 2 years when the battery dies. You'll keep it for 10 years. Same with a laptop or a Kindle.

I'm not getting it.  At least, no time in the immediate future.

I have a refurbished 6s I bought in February 2015.  Works fine for now, although it needs reset from time to time because the battery will start running down.  It's software related, and I'm sure for Apple it's not a bug, it's a "feature".  As in, this is how we get dumbasses to buy new phones every 18 months.

I've finally realized that I do not use these devices to their fullest potential.  I text, do really basic web searching, and play slot machines when I'm on the can.  I don't want to watch movies on this thing,  I don;t like the camera (since I've got a full frame Canon SLR and a bag full of L glass).  It's not my primary device.  I have a desktop at work and one at home.  The things I do on my phone could be done on a much cheaper device.

I'll stick with the iOS biosphere because I'm comfortable with it and it's doing what I want, but when this thing finally breaks I'll be getting something from the bottom end of the product line.

Not sure about where you are but I use my iPhone 5S as a wifi and/or bluetooth hotspot all the time. In fact I took the SIM out of my iPad altogether. Don't need it, because I can just connect it to my phone and use my phone's data plan.

Not on the old unlimited/unthrottled data plan. You have to use a 3rd party app to turn on the hotspot. If you have a regular data plan, you just hit the button. Verizon lost a lawsuit in 2012 over it, but you have to use that 3rd party app (FoxFi) to access the feature and Apple won't allow it through their ecosystem,.

$1200? It's $1000. As usual, the iHaters have to exaggerate. The facts don't enter into it.

Meanwhile, the iPhone 8 is $700. Or $230 less than the Galaxy 8.

That's right, kids! Samsung's newest phone is $930. Or $970, depending on your carrier. Which is why the usual idiots are crowing endlessly about how the $1000 iPhone costs too much, to distract your tiny brains from reality.

Have a 6 and I'm perfectly comfortable with it. Maybe I'll upgrade the next cycle. I've generally been on a 'skip two cycles' plan but never buy a first generation Apple product so no iPhone X for me.

Really, it's a status symbol. A small-sized phone with a larger screen (with cutouts).

Does it do anything that the smaller phones don't? Facial recognition---maybe, but anything else?

No, not really.

It's like the $10,000 Apple Watch. Congrats, you bought an Accord in Ferarri Red. Aren't you special.

Lol, go buy one and show me the receipt.
I bet you the cost of the iPhone you won't have paid $1000 for it.
I paid ~$800 for my Galaxy S8+, on Verizon it's $840, $850 on Sprint and AT&T
Looks like facts don't enter into for you either...

I paid $90 for my personal Moto G3.
My office gave me an iPhone 7 for work purposes.
The iPhone doesn't do anything that the Moto doesn't do, except for NFC payments, which I find to be not important enough to pay the Apple tax.
My Lumia 640 was more useful for me than either one, until MS decided that buggy agile OS development for W10M was better than a stable OS. I was sad to give up the Lumia.

I think he is mixing the Note 8, which is within a few dollars of $1k, with the S8+, which can be bought outright for about $700 with rebates.
