Crazy ruling. She told lies. A magazine told the truth. Then the magazine was sued for telling the truth because it was decided telling the truth was being mean to Rebel and could hurt her career.

Slander laws are different in Australia, and you have a point-This case probably would not have flown in the USA.

But it wasn't the US, and she won, so good for her. Enjoy the loot, Rebel, you earned it.

So...did she lie or not?  Seems that neither the featured article nor the trial itself actually delved into if the statements made by the magazines were true or not, just if they would hurt her ability to make money.

She lied about her age and real name. The magazine printed her age and real name.

Stung by the fact that her hometown magazines had targeted her and perhaps aware of Australia's tough defamation laws, Wilson played to win, taking on 40 stories which variously accused her of lying about her age, real name and childhood. She said she had lost roles because of the portrayal of her as a serial liar.

In the Supreme Court of Victoria, Ms Schoff QC* said the star's mother did not name her Rebel at birth.

'When she was at school, nobody knew of Rebel Wilson,' she told the court. Ms Schoff also argued Wilson had deliberately misled journalists about her real age and claimed to be younger than she actually was.

Wilson has asserted throughout the trial she never lied about her age, but simply deflected questions by answering: 'a lady never tells'. However, Ms Schoff pointed to an email sent by Wilson's publicist to a Guardian journalist in April 2015 in which the publicist said the star was 29, when she was in fact 35.

She also reminded the jury of an incident in which Wilson contacted Fairfax CEO Greg Hywood asking him to remove her age from an online article. Ms Schoff said it showed Wilson wasn't just trying to administer a 'sense of mystery' about her age, but 'manipulate the public record' so people would think she was still in her 20s.

Ms Schoff said the matters raised in the articles were 'trivial' and nowhere claimed Wilson was a 'serial liar'.

Wilson claims her reputation was damaged following publication, leading to her being sacked from two DreamWorks animation and missing out on future lead movie roles.

If they couldn't even prove that her "real name" was substantially true, then whoever wrote the article didn't do their research. They lied, they got caught, get over it.

Whoever wrote the article did a shiatty job, but you could have confirmed her birth name and actual age in literally seconds with Google.

Rebel Wilson was born Melanie Elizabeth Bownds. She'd been claiming to be a few years younger than she actually was when she started getting famous, and her agents eventually told her to stop talking about her age, because "Hollywood is very ageist, especially towards women". So she stopped talking about her age, but also never corrected anyone who kept reporting the wrong age, either. Her actual name and age were revealed in legal documents unearthed by journalists.

The whole thing started because Rebel decided to make some shiatty remarks about "older" actresses - actresses who in reality were around the same age as she is. So journalists who knew the truth and had been letting it go until then, decided that was not cool, and they should report on the truth. Rebel basically has attacked other women in Hollywood for being too old, while lying about her own age, and then using Hollywood's discrimination of older women as a rationalization of why she would pretend to be younger than the women she badmouthed.

That's pretty farked up. She sounds like a horrible person. She also pretended to have a more modest upbringing than she actually did, in an effort to create a more marketable persona. That's fine and all, but when you cross the line like she did talking shiat about "older" actresses her same age - while simultaneously claiming victimhood over Hollywood age discrimination - that shiat is going to get found out too, and will look like just one more shiatty thing from a shiatty excuse for a person.

But libel laws are different in Australia, and worshiping the cult of personality is not unique to America. So she hammed it up for an all-woman jury, and even though the allegations in the reporting were all substantiated in fact, she won anyway. The justice system can blow it all over the world, we're not unique for that either.

The article about this that I read did say that the magazine had falsely claimed that Rebel said her parents had named her Rebel at birth. So it seemed on that point at least that they couldn't back up what they wrote. Obviously the age thing was true. I don't know about the rest. But all I have to say is this: when I watched Bridesmaids I had no idea who Rebel Wilson was and I thought that it was Jonah Hill in drag. When I saw the credits and there was no Jonah Hill I went to IMDB to investigate, and it turned out, nope, it wasn't him.

What gets me about this ruling that, while apparently what they said wasn't true, it's hard for me to see as to why any of the information listed would actually be damaging to her career. The only thing I can think of is her age, because Hollywood is shiat to older actresses, but, really, that's Hollywood's fault.

Yeah, that's what I think too. While I'm glad that Rebel won, I have to admit that the Australian definition of slander is a very low bar compared to what we consider slander in the USA.

As I linked above, they reported on her actual year of birth, real name, and where she grew up. Those things are verifiable with official legal documents, which were discovered and reported on accurately. That's not why she won. She won because she was able to convince a jury that those truths weren't important and had hurt her career, and Australian libel laws are looser than our own here in America.

And, as I also linked above, it's important to note that her whole reasoning behind having originally pretended to be younger, then stopping discussing her age at all (on advice of her management), and then saying she just decided she wouldn't ever correct anyone who was reporting her erroneously younger age that was out in the public sphere at that point was because "Hollywood is ageist, particularly against women". Then she started making nasty remarks about other actresses' ages - who were about the same age as she was in reality. That's what got them to start publishing articles about her misleading, manufactured image in the first place.

It's her own damn fault for being a terrible person and a shameless hypocrite, and she ended up getting paid for it.

She built her "brand" on the story of how she was named at birth, that kids teased her for it, growing up poor.  Her persona was strongly built around the "poor girl who was made fun of <for a lot of reasons> does well..." meme, which was very, VERY far from the truth.

In that world, it's not so much that she's a phony.  It's that she was so obvious about it and got caught.  IF she were earlier in her career, it might have limited her.

That said, I see young actors, stunt people, directors, etc. constantly changing their names, reinventing their life stories, education, experience, etc. all the time.  Why they aren't taken out to the woodshed for that stuff is beyond me (especially when it causes a project to recast a role because the person you cast can't do what you hired them to do).
