I don't think that there has ever been a show with such a huge and insanely talented cast. And while a lot of the material seems dated now, it was edgier than anything else at the time.

Soap was a great show.  Superb cast and funny as hell.

Burt: [Burt has been kidnapped by space aliens, and informed that one of them is going to be sent down to live in his house] He's not gonna, uh... umm... uh...
Space Alien: Sleep with your wife? Of course! Why do you think he's jumping up and down? He has not had sex for 2,000 years.

So much this. Great show, used to watch on Comedy Central every day after work.

An independent TV station in Denver used to re-run Soap and the original Star Trek in adjacent time slots, and made an ad to promote them both, interleaving some of the sillier clips from each.  It was surreal.

I remember my mom wouldn't let me watch it because...horrors...the show had a character with 'the gehy' on it.

As TFA mentions, Casey Kasem was originally slated to do the announcer (Rod Roddy's) role. Now THAT could have been epic.

My dad, who is more than a little fruity himself, refused to watch Billy Crystal in anything for years after for the same reason.

/Although I endorse not watching Billy Crystal, outside of a few movies, in general.
//Father was a cheerleader, still loves showtunes, is gay-fit (even at 71), very vain, and prefers hanging around sweaty, athletic men.

A great sequence. Also, the leader of the cult is played by Freddy Krueger himself (just a year or two before the first Nightmare, IIRC).

Also notable cameos: Spaceballs' Colonel Sandursz (as the shrink who hypnotizes Burt), Daniel-San LaRusso's mom (as Alice, network TV's first recurring lesbian character), Joe "Fat Tony" Mantegna (NOT Joe Montana) as Juan One, and Everyone Loves Ray's mom was Tim Flotsky's mom.

// plus, Danny Campbell was Blossom's dad

It was unusual for a TV series to have a gay character. Jody wasn't stereotypical either.

I wasn't really allowed to watch it either - it was on after 9:00PM (9:30 I think) and racy for the time.
Folks loosened up after a while and I watched most of the second and the entire third seasons first run.

/had crushes on Dinah Manoff and Diana Canova

I really miss that show. And Mary Hartman Mary Hartman.

It seems so odd to say that there was quality in network television at one time.

I saw Jay Johnson in his Broadway show "The Two And Only" in 2006. Hilarious!

It's hard to imagine today, but Billy Crystal took a huge career risk by playing a gay man on television.

I still think Burt being kidnapped and replaced by Aliens is still my favorite story line.

though my favorite quote is Benson during the babies possession.

Benson:I'll go. My mother always said to me, she said: "Son, meet the devil the eye and meet him straight on. You can't wrestle him to the ground unless you've got ahold of him first!"
[the house shakes with evil power]
Benson: My mother was a babbling fool is what she was! Major crackpot, everyone knew it! She was nuts!

/watched the series when it first aired. I was way to young...but my parents didn't really bother with that whole... "age appropriate" thing.

There was also a window of time where it looked like Peter Scolari would be the breakout star of the two.

I mean, Newhart vs. Bachelor Party? Scolari wins that round.
