As a long, long, LONG-suffering Padres fan, this warms the cockles of my heart.

Maybe below the cockles. Maybe in the sub-cockle area, maybe in the liver, maybe in the kidneys, maybe even in the colon. I don't know.

18 games left, ARI back by 9.  that would be hilarious.

Wild Card standings (with leader's wins in parentheses):

NL East:  (88)  MIA, 68
NL Cent: (77) STL and MIL, 75
NL West: (92) ARI 83

not bortihng with the wild wild card.

That Mariners team didn't have an epic collapse, and they lost in the playoffs too, so I hate to try and draw too much from this

Also: why the fark did they play that game, it ended at 5 am eastern lol

Somebody needs to get into Dave Roberts' thick skull that sometimes the fans know better than he does.  Baez was booed after he walked a batter in his last appearance at Dodger Stadium (he escaped that game without giving up any runs) because his previous three appearances were horrible.  Roberts then complained about the fans booing him, and put him in this game when the score was 6-6.  Of course, he gave up a run and took the loss.

http://dodgerblue.com/dodgers-news-dave-roberts-confident-pedro-baez-could-navigate-bottom-of-giants-lineup/2017/09/12/

He also keeps starting Granderson, even though he is 8 for 72 since joining the Dodgers.  He even gave a few starts to Joc Pederson, who was sent down in August for going 3 for 70 or something...and then hit .167 in AAA (he's 1 for 10 since getting called back up when the rosters expanded).  He doesn't give Barnes enough work, even though he can both catch and play the infield and is batting .299 with a .414 OBP, favoring people like Kiki Hernandez (.215/.304) and Logan Forsythe (.228/.357).  He needs to start Turner, Taylor, Bellinger, Seager, Puig, and Barnes in every game until they win (he keeps benching one or more of this group).

I decided at the last minute to take my mom and 11-yo son to the Indians game last night. It was a good time, and the weather was great. I was surprised at how many empty seats there were, though.  I guess the Tribe's TV ratings being up haven't translated to stadium attendance.

At least they've greatly improved the food and beer selections in recent years.

There's only 18 games left. If the Dodgers manage to go .500 down the stretch, the DBacks would have to win out to tie them. If Arizona finishes 12-6, the Dodgers could finish 4-14 and still win the division.

Interestingly, there is some method to Roberts' madness.  IE, he has made some moves that should help the Dodgers come October that probably caused at least some of their recent losses (treating every injury like it was cancer and giving everybody double the time they needed to heal, giving all their good players excessive days off, trying out every single AAA player to see if they were worthy for the post season).  It's just that they fell into a general slump at the same time Roberts was doing this, and he now needs to knock it off.  But that doesn't mean that the good effects from that time off won't pop up come October.  IE, there's still a good chance of them getting a second wind at exactly the right time.

They're still winning the West, but right now the most compelling series is Colorado-Arizona. Because I'm a Rockies fan and I say so.

I'm not saying it's impossible, I'm saying that it's incredibly unlikely. It would make the '69 Mets look like the 2016 Dodgers.

By the way, if they do tie, they no longer award the division to the team with the best H2H record, since the wild card is only one game. They would have to play a game on the Monday after the season ends to determine the division winner and the wild card "winner"

Everybody was all drooling over him, when all six of the existing Dodgers starters had lower ERAs at the time (yeah yeah, AL vs NL batters, but still).  Note that this is still the case.

Plus, why the fark do the Dodgers need seven starters, anyways?

Yes, McCarthy is on the DL (hopefully he'll be back by the end of the year).  But they have two emergency starters (Ross Stripling and Brock Stewart), and I didn't count Julio Urias, who is also on the DL but is guaranteed not to be back this year.  Include them, and that's ten starters.

Oh, and they finally won. :)
