Mariel Hemingway told TMZ that Sands' decision was admirable, but that her grandfather's home was "just a house."
"Save the cats - get all the cats in the car - and take off," she said.

Yeah, that 72 year old woman should have just loaded 54 cats into her car and then drive hundreds of miles. Sounds fine

Years ago, I drove over to my parents' house (3 1/2 hours) for Christmas, and I brought my cat with me.  Even though he was in his carrier, and had taken some "happy pills" courtesy of his vet, it's not something I want to do again.

Hah. My cat is cooler, because she has SEVEN toes on every paw. (glad the cats were safe, but no idea why the woman didn't crate them and evacuate?)

My tour guide was great...older guy.  And once everyone has asked their questions and the end of the tour, I asked him about when "License to Kill" was filmed there, and he said "That's your question?"

I chuckled and told him that he did such an awesome job with the tour, that he covered everything I wanted to know about Ernest Hemingway.

BTW, if you want to visit the original Sloppy Joe's (his old watering hole), don't go to the current one...go to Captain Tony's...it's where Sloppy Joe's used to be.

One of my cats can actually turn into a hurricane if I put him in a carrier. First he phase-changes to liquid to try to escape, but once he's inside he gets on his side and runs against the sides of the crate like a vortex. I was worried he'd bust out of it before we got to the vet.

Oh no.

My cat's carrier is one that looks like a gym bag.  During that road trip, he was howling (even while on cat Xanax) so I unzipped it a little bit so I could pet/comfort him.  Well, that was a mistake, he got out of his carrier, and hopped onto my lap, and put his paws on the steering wheel.  I pulled over, and it was a biatch getting him back in the carrier.

Our old family cat was even worse.  During Christmas break back in college, I drove her to the vet, and she was so pissed off about the experience, she took a mean swipe and scratched the vet.  (My cat will whine on the way to the vet, but he's chill when the vet examines him.)

What do you do?  Open cans of tuna in a bus and hope they come?  Any over/under of how many cats you can collect before the other cats simply don't want to stay on the transport?

Moved my two cats about 60 min from one house to another. Princess Melodramatica yowled bloody murder the entire farking time. The Glorious Marshmallow on the other hand would occasionally release the most piteously despairing "mooooo.........." as though he was mostly resigned to his fate.

That drive felt like days.

Yeah, comforting a traveling cat tends to bite one's own butt.  Let mine out in the van on the way back from the vet & she took a great big poop on my passenger side floor.  Can't blame her, when ya gotta go ya gotta go, but still: whoops.

Our guy seemed like a high school teacher, he was pretty damned normal by Key West standards and was extremely informative.  Took a bunch of questions at the end.
That place is pretty much the most awesome 'touristy' thing on the planet.

I read in another article Hemingway chose a very good site when he built his house. Whether it survives global warming climate change Godzilla is another story.

My fat monster hated car rides.  The only place I took him was the vets.
One time he got almost inside the dashboard of my Bonneville.  I had to pull the lower part apart in the vet's parking lot.
All the while he has screaming bloody murder.
He passed away last month.

IIRC, it moved while Hemingway was still living and drinking there, so they're both kind of legit. Probably smart to go to both.

Definitely went to Sloppy Joe's, even still have a coaster. Can't remember If I went to   Capt. Tony's or not, but I think I did. Don't remember all those bras on the ceiling that I'm seeing in Google. But I also remember going somewhere that had a ton of license plates everywhere.

/When Sloppy Joe's moved, the bar patrons were prying up bits of the old building. Hemingway reasoned that so much of his money had gone down the drain of their urinal that he should keep it

Hahaha...oh no.

I just remembered something:

One summer, we took our family cat to my Grandparents' house, since we were going to be there for a week.  Well, she howled and cried during the 4 hour drive, and the next morning, she got her revenge.

I was going to spend week sleeping on an air mattress in the daylight basement, since it would be much cooler.  Well, I wake up around 5AM, and it's wet down by my ankles.  My first thought is that I wet the bed...and I f*cking hoped not, since I was in high school.  I touched my crotch, and it was dry....and I felt the wet spot, smelled my fingers (phrasing?), and quickly realized that she had pissed on my bed as a way of saying "F*CK YOU".

/That's the only time she ever peed on something that was she wasn't supposed to.

1) I agree 100%.  And since we're recommending bars, I will mention The Smallest Bar in Key West....that's the name.  I stopped in after this Jamaican bartender called me out while I was on the sidewalk.  "Hey mon!  Come in and have a drink!"  (He actually said that, which was awesome.)  I followed his advice.

2) The first time I walked into Captain Tony's, it was early afternoon during mid-week, so it wasn't busy at all...and this guy was sitting on a stool, playing a guitar, and singing Pear Jam's "Elderly Woman Behind the Counter in a Small Town".  Since I'm from the Seattle area, that put a smile on my face.

Only had my cat in a carrier once.  And that was when a coworker dropped him off after convincing me to take him in while I was drunk at a party.  I forgot all about it until my doorbell rand and there he was.  That was a hell of a surprise to wake up to.  Cat is huge, the carrier was meant for a damn chihuahua.  He's scared stiff, covered in his own piss and shaking.  Dude brings him into the tub and showers him off with cold water right then and there.  Welcome to your new home, little guy!  Thing probably thought it got sent to gitmo.

He's better now because his owner is not a moron.

Mine are all monsters as well.  Especially Zena, all 6 lbs of her.  (They rest are all 18-22 lbs)  She's the mouthiest, loudest, pushiest, most demanding beeech.  But I love them all.  Zoye after 11 years of never being a "bed cat" (her choice, not mine, they can all pile into the cuddle puddle) discovered the memory foam topper I got for the mattress a month or so ago.  Now she rarely gets off the bed.  Even though they have gel/foam beds and pads, as they are all getting up there in years, she seems to think she needs only the queen sized one to make her happy.  And who am I to argue?  :)

Next set I get one will be named Mau.

WHAT OF THEM?!?

2017-09-12 01:45:58 PM
I'm currently owned by three, the eldest having just turned 16, the other two 3. They cry on the way to the vet but it isn't unbearable. A lot of times I put the kit-kats (the younger two) in a harness on a leash and strap the leash in in the back seat- they're actually okay with that. The one I think has some Siamese in him will climb up on the back of the seat and stare out the window, then every now and then catch my eye in the rear view and cry pitifully, as if he just remembered he isn't supposed to enjoy and I am torturing him and God, what is wrong with me?

All three at once in an evac situation? Yeah, probably not fun.

Ushi-Ko is the 5 pound fuzzball who thinks she's a bulldog. Dres and Agi are both north of 12 pounds, but Dres is In Charge. If they get uppity, he smacks them in the head and off the bed, then patrols the bed, "repelling all boarders" until he thinks they learned their lesson. I want to get a gray one next, but we seem to do best with 3. Because they all glom onto me, and I end up with a cat on each arm and one on my legs at night. Four would be like a perennial fur coat.

Yes, yes it is.  :)  I really wanted just the 3, but when I added Robin, Zoye had to come along as he was quite fond of her.  So a twofer, and I ended up with four.  Zena and Grady are literal littermates, so the size difference is quite pronounced.

I still adore them all, and would do anything for them.

Just because technically correct is the best kind of correct, 18" limestone blocks.  But yeah, pretty sturdy structure, it's survived every hurricane basically intact since it was built in 1851.
