PreMortem: Hero? That reminds me... Subby, go make me a sammich. Hold the overzealous platitudes.

Was this posted from a hurricane rescue station? Were you typing this on your phone while assisting those in need? Or are you eating sausage with your bare hands and critiquing someone else's efforts?

(Im sure you probably meant not a hero for cancelling her wedding but anyone running into the danger to help is a little bit hero in my book)

Damn. I wish I had had a ready-made excuse like that when I got cold feet.

Into the danger? It's not dangerous getting your socks wet.

You're quick to jump on people not helping. What have you done? How much have you donated?

As said above, it's a pretty good excuse for calling off the engagement. If you really wanted to get married, you would not drop a wedding for it.

You know who else canceled their wedding to go off to do something big?

Been there, done that. Andrew in 92.

Just because you are helping doesn't make you a hero. Perhaps you have a lower threshold as to what constitutes a "hero".

A). I jumped because the guy was making fun of someone else helping. I didn't say " you aren't worthy unless you are actively helping". Nice white knight, though.

B). $500.

Again - I'm sure PreMortem appreciates your defense.

And it is a farking job everybody.

They actually got married while mobilized for hurricane relief, since they got activated right before their wedding.

Couldn't she just delay it? "I'm sorry, honey, a hurricane is a deal-breaker. The wedding's off." Seems a bit harsh.

Unless the guy caused Irma, in which case we should beat the hell out of him.

Postponed surely? Irma did a lot of damage but I'm sure she didn't actually destroy relationships.

I've heard of people coming out of the closet just before they get married, but cancelling your wedding and telling the groom-to-be that you're doing it so you can run off and go get blown by Irma has got to sting a little.

The Pucelle d'Orleans look is very popular this year. Shining white armour. But I expect the armed forces regard this a over-kill or at least a bit unprofessional if you are not leading an army.

Ingram said the base in Battle Creek has offered to allow her to use the chapel there on Saturday, the day before she deploys.

And they could probably use the parachute rigger's work area for the wedding night so they could have sweet, sweet Josh Hartnett-Kate Beckinsale love.

"I didn't even think about asking sergeant if I didn't have to go or how I could get out of it. It was just natural for me just to think of what do I need to do on my end to be a part of this," she said.

Probably for the best because the answer would have been "no".

For the record I doubt this solider thought she was doing anything heroic.  Military service literally trumps everything else in your life.

Yeah, I know the bride-to-be is only in the National Guard, but when am I going to get to do this set again?

Disrupting your life is kind of what you sign up for.  Following through on your commitments does not make you a hero.

Y'all are letting a $5 troll define hero and I am here all "Did she get all her deposits back? If she doesn't wear the dress can she return it for some value"

Weddings are expensive as shiat and even more expensive to cancel since you rarely get your money back and some skinflints always decide to ungift shiat or expect them back lickity-split.

/Florida is already dangerous, no power florida with all the waterborne meth-ed up Pythons is dangerous by definintion
//Also the LMOE's who end up cropping up after these kinds of disaster tend to take pot shots at relief workers.

Yeah, and all those downed power lines aren't dangerous at all.  Or collapsing structures.  Or water born diseases.  I could probably go on and on, but you don't seem like the type of person who gets that kind of thing in the first place.

I was wearing a green monkey suit, full time, and was sent down for Andrew. I get it. This is a heavy rain compared to Andrew. Also, I have seen no reporting of anything like downed power lines, collapsing structures, or malaria spreading in Florida. It's wet, people have no power for a few days. Boo Hoo.

Pretty sure that CAT5 hurricane that just tore through Florida knocked down a few things. Mostly unimportant stuff though like trees and shrubs, right? All the power lines miraculously made it through intact and it didn't knock down any bridges or buildings which haven't had their structural integrity compromised and aren't in various states of collapse. And the water is just pristine and clear as a mountain glacier and not full of debris, excrement, decomposing bodies, trash, various chemicals, etc. Yep, not a perfect breeding ground for those pesky, malaria spreading mosquitoes at all of which there are none in Florida.

=P

She's not a "hero".  It's her job.  She's paid to do it. She knew that her employer may call her up at any time.  But let me be clear - I'm not at all demeaning her - that job is incredibly important and all that.  In the sense that it helps people in potentially life threatening situations, yes, it's more important than my job or career.

But all this really cheapens the word, "hero".  A fireman isn't a hero by just being a fireman and responding to fires or re-scheduling things to meet one's responsibilities.
