It's been given short shrift due to all the bizarre crap that's happened since, but Trump's performance around the Qatar issue was one for the ages. He got played badly and foolishly and this would have been one of the worst diplomacy fark-ups dragging down any normal administration.

Wait till Trumpy finds out he doesn't get to keep them. I'll bet nobody's told him yet.

No, there's a special clause in the Constitution that the President isn't allowed to accept income or gifts from foreign countries, which Trump has been following scrupulously.

All the nations know now that he "makes the best deals" on behalf of himself.  He's made it plain as day that his influence is up for literally up for sale domestically and internationally. He's being manipulated to hell and back unwittingly and America as a whole loses out while he thinks he's 'winning'.

Gift exchange is pretty standard during state visits, so as far as it goes I'm okay with this. If you told me Trump didn't completely understand that, though, I wouldn't be surprised.

What did the US give in return, I wonder? Not surplus MAGA hats, I hope?

That limit is for congressional approval and it's $375. Anything over that, congress needs to be notified.
And like I said above, they can keep gifts that are of "minimal value". I don't know who determines what minimal value is though. They turn the items over to the archivist who assigns a "fair market value" to each item and the president can keep it by paying that price.

Trump got a gold driver golf club from the prime minister of Japan and kept it. He used it when they played golf together a on a later visit. I thought I read that he would be required to pay something like $4000 to keep it.

I imagine it's on a case by case basis to determine what they can and cannot keep but I don't know. for sure. I'm not that interested in knowing the details.

Bottom line is, Yes, they can keep some gifts. They just need to pay for them.

You can read the rules here (copy paste. won't let me link here)
https://fas.org/sgp/crs/misc/R42662.pdf

You can see year by year what gifts they were given here

It's definitely illegal over there for citizens to paint, draw or convey anything with a soul in any kinda artwork, which makes the Trump portrait they gave him a tad hypocritical (but then again, citizens are put to death for having any amount of drugs there, yet one of their princes got busted hauling pills and a form of amphetamines into the country. Definitely some "all the laws for thee, and none for we" shiat going on there).

Considering we know about them from an inventory list compiled by the State Department, I would guess he has given them to the State Department to be inventoried.
