If I may Godwin the thread in the third post -- when would it be okay to play instrumental versions of the Horst-Wessel-lied?

Realistically, though, I suppose it kinda depends on whether most people are aware of the lyrics, or if the original lyrics have been replaced with good ones or not. Me, sitting here in Wisconsin all my life, I don't have a clue what the lyrics of On, Wisconsin are. I imagine it has something to do with beer.

Is Deutschland Uber Alles still the German National Anthem? What about the Soviet National Anthem, do they still use that in Russia?

Answer: yes, both are still used. You just sing a different verse than the problematic one, or change the lyrics based on which way the wind is blowing.

Your opinion is meaningless.  Without value. Worthless.

Play what you want, but don't pretend it has anything but "PR of the moment" motivation.

Well thank heavens at least that the lyric was "Northern Scum".  It could have been "Deplorables" which not only would have made rhyming hard, but I'd think the eighth notes would kill the sousaphone player.

born and raised there but haven't lived back there in about 15 years and I think I got this (no googles):

On Wisconsin, on Wisconsin
Grand ol Badger State
We thy loyal sons and daughters

Champion on the rise
(?)
Forward our motto
God is good and great
(ok, I know that last line is wrong but it's something like that or at least has that many syllables)

Write a song around the crab cakes and football line in wedding crashers.

I've never known the lyrics to that song and am barely familiar with the tune.

It's kind of shocking it took this long for something to be done about it - that's like if the 3rd verse of Oh Holy Night (nobody knows what's in the 3rd verse, come on) had a bit blaming it all on the Jews...that might have been changed by now, quietly, and without much controversy.  But if it hadn't been changed, once you find out about it, you just can't keep on playing that song.

Yeah, maybe they should do something about a song that supports slavery on the sly. Too bad everyone thinks MD is some liberal paradise and not full of hicks and rednecks in western Maryland and Eastern Shore that block it from being changed. I mean fark, the guns in Baltimore were pointed at the city during the Civil War.

Considering they basically play "Oh Tannenbaum", it doesn't sound so bad.  I'm curious if they shut up the chapel steeple bells.  They play the first notes every hour.

Does the national anthem include the rest of the verses of "The Star Spangled Banner"?  They aren't exactly PC either (and while the first hit was at the freepers, they aren't anything like "Maryland my Maryland" (a direct call to join the Confederacy)).  I doubt the freepers include the often included "fifth verse" added during the Civil War.
/the other verses are also full of propaganda a child could see through
//we were getting our butts kicked locally (see DC burning)
///hard to hail the conquering heroes when your attackers leave without taking any damage, but are low on powder thanks to pounding you all night.  The flag was still there, that's enough heroism.

Lyrics, as found on the some State of Maryland site.  Since i don't find "Northern scum" to be particularly offensive I don't find much of anything offensive in it.  So yeah, like someone posted above, this is pure BS PR stuff.

Maryland, My Maryland
I
The despot's heel is on thy shore,
Maryland!
His torch is at thy temple door,
Maryland!
Avenge the patriotic gore
That flecked the streets of Baltimore,
And be the battle queen of yore,
Maryland! My Maryland!
II
Hark to an exiled son's appeal,
Maryland!
My Mother State! to thee I kneel,
Maryland!
For life or death, for woe or weal,
Thy peerless chivalry reveal,
And gird thy beauteous limbs with steel,
Maryland! My Maryland!
III
Thou wilt not cower in the dust,
Maryland!
Thy beaming sword shall never rust,
Maryland!
Remember Carroll's sacred trust,
Remember Howard's warlike thrust,-
And all thy slumberers with the just,
Maryland! My Maryland!
IV
Come! 'tis the red dawn of the day,
Maryland!
Come with thy panoplied array,
Maryland!
With Ringgold's spirit for the fray,
With Watson's blood at Monterey,
With fearless Lowe and dashing May,
Maryland! My Maryland!
V
Come! for thy shield is bright and strong,
Maryland!
Come! for thy dalliance does thee wrong,
Maryland!
Come to thine own anointed throng,
Stalking with Liberty along,
And sing thy dauntless slogan song,
Maryland! My Maryland!
VI
Dear Mother! burst the tyrant's chain,
Maryland!
Virginia should not call in vain,
Maryland!
She meets her sisters on the plain-
Sic semper! 'tis the proud refrain
That baffles minions back amain,
Maryland!
Arise in majesty again,
Maryland! My Maryland!
VII
I see the blush upon thy cheek,
Maryland!
For thou wast ever bravely meek,
Maryland!
But lo! there surges forth a shriek,
From hill to hill, from creek to creek,
Potomac calls to Chesapeake,
Maryland! My Maryland!
VIII
Thou wilt not yield the Vandal toll,
Maryland!
Thou wilt not crook to his control,
Maryland!
Better the fire upon thee roll, Better the shot, the blade, the bowl,
Than crucifixion of the Soul,
Maryland! My Maryland!
IX
I hear the distant thunder-hum,
Maryland!
The Old Line bugle, fife, and drum,
Maryland!
She is not dead, nor deaf, nor dumb-
Huzza! She spurns the Northern scum!
She breathes! She burns! She'll come! She'll come!
Maryland! My Maryland!

It doesn't however outright say it should support slavery. Instead it has hints like Virginia should not stand alone.
