When the Republicans began attacking GLBTs back in those days, I got pissed and volunteered at local GLBT organizations at work & in the community.

Still doing so here in Huntsville, Alabama, because the hatred is still out there. Fighting for equal rights for everyone is a constant struggle, especially in this God forsaken, self-destructive state. 🏳🌈

Dear (D)'s,

Please farking learn from this strategy.  You need something to get out the vote.  The (R)'s use fear, that's their red meat to feed their base; (R)'s gonna (R).  Find your red meat.  I suggest, based on actual past data that gets out the vote, you maybe start with minimum wage.  But whatever.  Find some issues.

Hugs,

Gay marriage and abortion are wedge issues the right uses effectively because they only push Republicans to the polls. Democrats don't go out to vote for gay marriage or abortion rights, but Republicans turn out in droves to vote against them. The GOP doesn't give a rat's ass who uses which bathroom, they just want Democrat candidates to say they support trans people so conservatives will vote against them.

Lando Lincoln: They'll find one. It will work. The only question is how lazy the voters on the other side are going to be.

Historically, pretty lazy. It's hard to believe but not everyone spends every moment of their free time consuming political news. They catch the highlights from their propaganda news agency of choice and to back to their lives.

Those people aren't afraid Trump is going to start WWIII or that Nazis have taken over America. They aren't worried about Mueller or impeachment. They're just living their lives,  and if they didn't vote last time they probably aren't going to vote this time.

No matter how much you scream and yell at them about how important this election is or how the country is going to be ruined if they don't vote (for your candidate of course!), they've heard that every election and they don't care. As long as the power is on, there's food at the grocery store, and the internet works, the apolocalyptic news coverage is just media grabbing ratings and their vote doesn't matter.

This; you saw how gleeful Bannon was that the left was "falling for it"; he knows that support for keeping the statues up vs. taking them down is at 65% to 35%. The only questions are:

- What percent are impassioned by the debate and what percent are of that position just because they are averse to change or weakly support taking them down and aren't losing sleep if they aren't?
- How successfully can they frame the issue as a major liberal priority?
- What are the chances Trump's own toxicity/tendency to roll a 1 on a dog whistle attempt ends up shifting the polling numbers on that issue?

Only the republicans? Let's see what fear the left relies on including but certainly not limited to:

- they're suppressing our votes!
- they're taking away your excellent health care!
- they're going to lower taxes on the wealthy and take away your essential freebies!
- they're going to make you work instead of sitting home watching tv and collecting checks!

- they're going to make us use bathrooms based on our birth gender!
- they're going to deport people simply because they're breaking multiple laws!

Well, you can take a stance but its not a fight unless one takes the opposite.  As much as I oppose confederate monuments outside of battlefields/museums (basically: historical context) the Dems making this a platform would be dumb.

lordluzr: Wasn't that the whole point of the transperson bathroom bills?

Yeah, but that didn't really have the desired effect. Same with the whole confederate flag thing. Sure it riles up the base, but these issues turn off more voters in the general election.

The issue I see working for the GOP is something they have been doing behind the scenes--With Trump overturning police limitations on buying military equipment, and re-starting the war on drugs. A draconian "Pro-Police" ballot measure would bring out the base, and the GOP can freely attack the left for being "Anti-Law enforcement".

The only way I can see this backfire for the GOP is if-- 1. Attorney General Jeff Sessions gets perpwalked, and 2-Enough officers come out against their own police unions to support BLM/lobby against the war on drugs.

You nailed it.

I have a pretty diverse group of friends.  I grew up between South Louisiana and Colombia, South America.  Colombian, Cajun, and Sicilian.  And I have friends from all over the world on my Facebook.  Makes for some rousing discussions.

My college friends from Nicholls State and my high school friends from new orleans, are are pretty well off in life, smart cookies, but a good bit of them are trumpers. They stages of denial are hilarious.

First was "He is business man, he will get us back on track.
Then when it showed he was a shiatty businessman
"he says what he feels shoots from the cuff"
so he says some super racist shiat
"well, I was never really a Trump guy, but a never hillary person"

Then you mix in "I only voted for him because the democrats are gonna be killing babies"

And season it all up with "god damn lazy millenials". That one I just read on a page from a girl who is a realtor who inherited her mothers realty agency".

But at the same time, that's becoming less effective, just like marijuana legalization. In a few states, that still drives a large number to the polls. More abortion than "teh ickee gheys" nowadays, too many people know / have family members who are LGBTWTFBBQ for that to be as effective, but don't forget "soft on terror" and so on.

I think today's fear issue is "teh ebil illegal immigrants taking yer jerbs who might be gang members/terrists" dog whistle. Sure, it's horse shiat, but it's ridiculously easy to fix and doesn't even require a pointless/expensive wall. They don't want to fix it though, because too many of the big contributors use that low paid illegal labor to boost profits.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Flatulence

The noises commonly associated with flatulence ("blowing a raspberry") are caused by the vibration of anal sphincters, and occasionally by the closed buttocks. Both the noise and smell associated with flatus leaving the anus can be sources of embarrassment or comedy in many cultures.
