That's really cool. Will you get to speak with him?

I get to occasionally meet famous political folks because of my wife. It's usually kind of cool. Newt Gingrich was the huge exception.

I don't care about age as much as intelligence.  Especially after the shiat show Trump is putting on.

I'd like to see him run to keep the left wing of the party happy, but I'm sure he doesn't want to be another Bernie Sanders.

Oh don't get me wrong if he's the nominee he's got my vote without hesitation or reservation, I just hope someone around 50-55ish gets the nod instead.  Maybe a woman who isn't Hillary?

We have to stop trying to custom design a presidential nominee based on some arbitrary checklist of desirable traits.  "Oh, we've never had a woman, let's get a woman up there."  Get several good, solid people running to increase the chances of one of them making it past the primary.

This is an election, not online dating.

Hopefully someone with principles, intelligence, and experience who wants to serve will turn up in time.

/actually, that sound like my dating strategy, too.

with Franken as his VP pick perhaps

Newsom is f$cking sharp as shiat, young, good looking, hungry, politically skilled and can run on how well California is doing.  If you are going to run a liberal - run a f$cking liberal.

Alternate opinion: stop casting a Netflix series and just go for the most qualified individual no matter what their age, gender, racial background happens to be.

is that Bill Clinton getting his dick sucked in the background? Your boy Newsom is finished.

In all seriousness, I'd rather have someone that's never been in the same room as a Clinton, if it's at all possible.

I would love him to our first Jewish president. That we know of.

"Reluctant" is an odd euphemism for "been dreaming of it since 10 seconds after stepping off the SNL soundstage."

I'm going to have to pass on the "I'm superior to you in every meaningful way and if you don't believe me, just ask me" attitude.  I get enough of that from the Cheeto-in-Chief.

2017-08-25 09:04:46 AM
My one quibble with Franken. He's yet another celebrity. He may be a capable celebrity, but he's still a celebrity. We are far too obsessed with fame as if it grants magical powers.

Perhaps it's wishful thinking, but we need a candidate the exact opposite of Trump in every way.

He seems largely to be reluctant because he's happy and damn useful right in his current job, and because there seem likely to be several highly qualified women candidates running who if he opposes will significantly piss off some nontrivial fraction of the feminist wing of the Democratic party.

I can see him willing to accept the nomination as a compromise to end a deadlocked convention between Hillary-faction delegates and Bernie-faction delegates. Otherwise, the country would seem to be better off with him sharpening his stand-up routine on the dullards testifying to senate committee meetings.

The 80s were the decade of him, Al Franken.  Now the 20s will be too.

Interesting choice. He is coherent and not neck deep in a sea of skeletons.  As long as it is not HRC the states may actually get behind him.

Ignore him. Franken's been asked many times if he had an intent to run and turned it down every time. Like Warren, he's in a good spot now, doing good work.

I love Franken and what he has to say but he's got to work on his vocal delivery. And I don't mean shouting like a Trumpian buffoon.

He did an excellent job of meeting and relating to 'average Joes' in rural Minnesota. It's a hard sell but he's actually pretty personable. Further, he's got situational awareness and a quick wit. So he would do very well in townhall-type formats, visiting the local VFWs and diners. But he'll have to start that work soon to make enough contacts to get a good grass-roots thing going for him.

A certain subset will roast the crap out of him and spread it around to their facebook echo chamber but I think those folks are pretty much lost. Might as well be opium smokers. I frankly don't see another who can push the 50 state strategy that is needed.

Trump ran in an election cycle that favored populism, and despite that he needed a litany of events to all occur to get an Electoral College victory.  I still think he's an aberration, but one that was caused by both parties doing their jobs very poorly (and Russia of course).

Franken as VP is OK -- Franken is too valuable in the Senate, and, as VP, he will still have some influence there.

Arrogant probably wasn't the right word.  Franken seem condescending at times, which I never felt with Obama.  And the "arrogance" views of Obama were usually false narratives created by Fox News.

All I want out of Dems is to stage a candidate that people want to vote *for*, not any old candidate thinking people will turn out to the polls to vote *against* Trump.

Don't assume that literally anyone could beat Trump because it simply isn't so, kicking out a sitting president who is campaigning with the benefit of the bully pulpit is at best a difficult proposition, and Trump winning re-election is even more likely than his winning the first election that liberals widely proclaimed as "impossible".  Don't make the mistake a second time.

I keep seeing people say that he's doing too much good work in the Senate.  I agree that he's incredibly valuable there, but the problem is, people always say exactly the same thing about Warren, and when people started thinking about Harris earlier this year, they were saying it about her too.

It turns out that most of our best people might actually be doing good work elsewhere.  Hell, that's why we want them in the first place!  I agree we need good people in Congress, but we need someone good in the big chair too.  We have to stop shooting down all of our best candidates just because we already like the work they're doing now.  It's a tradeoff, but it's one worth making.
