Yes, because some of it just didn't feel it felt right on the albums. some of it MIGHT be side material, some of it might be brilliant, bit he didn't know where he wanted it. I will take and probably enjoy Princes b sides over the best crap Bieber or Drake can manufacture

Why would you be skeptical of someone with a financial incentive taking advantage of the former assets of someone that can't say anything to the contrary?

Buddy Holly's wife received a lot of vitriol because she refused to make public his unreleased stuff.   No one bothers to concern themselves with the idea that maybe Buddy Holly was just a perfectionist and didn't want his bottom shelf material released.

Because in interviews he said that the vault was "private" and that he wanted its contents destroyed when he died. He also indicated he had a will that stipulated that very thing.

I have no proof, and this is just my guess, but this whole thing stinks of lawyers, bankers, record company executives, and a drug-addicted half-sibling coming together to get filthy rich.

Prince had an iron grip on his business and had experienced his share of legal battles. Do you really think a control freak like Prince wouldn't have had a will? He was betrayed.

Friends of mine were at Paisley Park this summer and they saw them carting out some of the stuff from the vault.

They said they were labelled things like "4:27 of Farts" and "Smashing that Rat I Found in my Studio with a Baseball Bat". I don't have high hopes for this.

In Prince's case, there's tons of unreleased songs that have seen the light of day on bootlegs that are quite excellent. I would welcome hearing this stuff remastered in high quality official released versions. I would hope they could get someone like Susan Rogers who could do some quality control with regards to what they put out and keep idiots like will.i.am as far away as possible.

Hell, you could make a substantial box set of his versions of songs he wrote for other artists that I think would be fascinating to hear.

2017-08-22 11:26:30 AM
Prince probably didn't want this stuff released. His siblings are doing it for the money.

But...who cares? Prince is dead. His wishes don't mean anything anymore, especially since he didn't have a will. And I think most people that are Prince fans would like to hear this stuff.

Personally, I'm hoping there's a huge pile of "raunchy" Prince stuff. He was never the same after he found Jesus.

yeah.  i get what people are saying above, "there's a reason it was unreleased" but in fact, it is a fact that Prince recorded many albums that for whatever reason, he shelved at the last minute.  there are boatloads of stories about him recording (ever the perfectionist) tons of songs and on at least one occasion, he had stage outfits and a stage design, with choreographed dance moves for the band, and then one day the band comes in, thinking they're about to release the album in a few weeks and then go on tour.  "Uh yeah, Prince said he isn't feeling it.  He's with a new band.  but thanks for your hard work."  Never saw the light of day.

i read this bio a few months back and I think in the early 90s, he reconnected with I think Wendy and / or Lisa (from The Revolution) and the same things happened.  they recorded a bunch of songs, then one day prince just stopped talking to them.  interviewed years later, whomever it was, said something like "i have no idea why it happened or where those songs are but we basically had an album.  we worked on it for several months and then, bam, it disappeared.  Only Prince knows where it is now."

there are just tons of those stories from people he worked with.  same fact pattern.  "we busted our ass, we had plans beyond the album, and then he just stopped talking to me and we never spoke again."

On this day in 2016:

It was reported that pills seized from the home of Prince contained the dangerously powerful synthetic opioid fentanyl but were mislabelled. Officials investigating the artist's death said the pills were labelled as hydrocodone, a weaker type of opioid. Autopsy results revealed Prince died of an accidental fentanyl overdose.

It's the industry standard practice of corpse farking. Your talent asset dies without controversy or shame, so you rummage around for branding rights and unreleased material. That's how I learned Justin Wilson had passed, a bunch of gift set junk with his likeness turned up at Walmart.

Things Prince didn't bother releasing are likely better than much of what you would currenty hear on top 40 radio.

Gosh, I wonder how that could have happened.

They almost killed him on the plane, but he recovered. IIRC, the guy who specialized in helping people to get off of prescription pain meds was visiting Prince THAT DAY and was, in fact, the one who found his body. How strange that Prince died before that fellow could render aid and help him kick the opiods.

And then the day after they took his body out of Paisley Park, they were drilling into the vault and seeding the news with stories about him not having a will.

I believe he was betrayed by some greedy farks who realized the vault was a platinum mine of music and video. I believe his drug issues were enabled and exacerbated by those were complicit in this scheme. I believe his will existed, but the people who knew about it were part of the scheme and they promptly made it disappear.

However, despite all this, I still want to hear the music because I'm of the mind that his Jehovah's Witness conversion and the death of his children (one after birth, one miscarriage) broke him as an artist and made the latter third of his career a lot less brilliant than it would have been had he not been emotionally destroyed and then religiously brainwashed. He was a legitimate musical genius, and the Jehovah's Witness conversion seemed to make him feel guilty about 75% of the music he composed, so he locked it away. He couldn't stop making it, because he NEEDED to make it, but he stopped short of releasing it because that religious guilt got him almost every time.

I'm glad I saw him in concert, even though it was after the conversion. He spent 3/4 of the show being Prince, and 1/4 of the show preaching, but that 1/4 was worth dealing with for the other 3/4, because the man was godlike on stage, and his meticulously-selected band members were all farking brilliant, too.

BullBearMS: Things Prince didn't bother releasing are likely better than much of what you would currenty hear on top 40 radio.

That's not a hard target to hit. Pretty much everything on Top 40 radio these days is composed by one of two guys (and the majority is Dr. Luke) and those same-as-the-last-one songs are performed by people who have little to no actual musical talent. They might be decent singers, but they're also autotuned up the wazoo and rely heavily on looks rather than musical ability. Most Top-40 acts couldn't compose or perform a song on their own if they tried.
