I'm extremely curious as to how Sweeney gets this done or makes a mess of it.

This is your test, Donnie.

In the meantime, the Oilers just signed Draisitl to an 8-year extension.  TSN immediately talks about how this will affect the Leafs.

I'm pretty sure TSN also had a segment this past weekend covering how the events in Charlottesville would affect the Leafs.

This is true.  As long as those continue, the Leafs will not win a Cup.

While I appreciate the humorous exaggeration, just to make it clear for those not familiar with Toronto Sports Network, I wasn't joking:

Eh, it's worth commenting as a side note given the similarities in both teams makeup, but not really as a main point.

Also Sweeney will screw this up.  I have three consecutive first round picks to back this up.

Also if my math is right Edmonton just commited 30% of their cap space to just two players.  This is gonna get real interesting when it's time to re-up other young guys.

The worst part of that was it wasn't even a case of revisiting the draft years later to see how players had developed.  There were better options available, everyone knew it and Sweeney still whiffed.

Christ, when the Pastrnak trade rumors started, Felger was all-aboard the "trade Pasta for Noah Hannifin" train.

Which to be honest isn't a bad plan. Sweeney tried to package those 3 pics for Noah anyhow. Why not?

D-men are a premium right now.

"When the sun rises in the west and sets in the east," said Mirri Maz Duur. "When the seas go dry and mountains blow in the wind like leaves. When Don Cherry's seamstress quickens again, and bears a normal suit. Then he, Lord Stanley, will return to Toronto, and not before."

So are young, dynamic, scoring wingers on the Bruins.

I'd be more interested in them having Carlo, Hannifin and McAvoy locked up.

Don't get me wrong, I want them to keep Pasta.

But at this moment in the league, d-men are the most valuable commodity. Have 3 top pairing guys is a freaking luxury you can use to your advantage.

I'm sure any team that acquires Pasternak will certainly get a boost in culture.  I mean, the dude wrote Dr. Zhivago.  He ain't a slouch.

Yay, we can lose 1-0 in OT. I thought we ditched Claude because of that.

Not exactly. If you have d-men that can flow into zone and move the puck properly, they can play into the offensive zone and still cover.

The problem with Claude's system wasn't just that the forwards were expected to play more defense than offense....the defensemen were as well.

All three of those guys have the ability to gain the zone on their own, and that is a critical component in the modern defensemen's skill set.

Who did you see play in their draft year that you would have taken in front of them? The vaunted duo of Connor and Barzal people moan about as the better options have 4 NHL points between them.  But the narrative was set in place that day that those kids were busts because there was some other kids from some other outposts in Saskatchewan that some guy in a blog had ranked a little higher. It's still too early to judge 2015.
