There are two types of people in the world: Those who go to restaurants to have a good meal, and those who go to restaurants to order people around.

Every so often I go to lunch after church, and there's one guy who always wants to go, has no indoor voice, and no filter.  Whenever he wants something, he waves his hand in the air and bellows the server's name.

"TONY!  Can you get my friend more water?"

"TONY! Can I have a to-go box?"

""TONY!  Can you get me some more catsup?"

....I die a little inside every time.

Here in Quebec I was told tipping is 15%. Easy because the tax is basically 15% so you read it off your bill and round up. Add more for good service.

Can I let you in on a little secret?

Every single server you've ever had in your life hates your guts and wants you to die.

Consider that fact the next time you're considering your tip. Even the ones who are nice to you and provide great service would rather see your face ground into broken glass than wait on you.

1. No actual adult needs to be told any of the things on the list, though some might benefit from a reminder.
2.  Can we stop ratcheting up the amount of the customary tip by compelling employers to pay wait staff a farking livable wage to begin with and return tipping to its rightful status as a gratuity for excellent service?  It's instead become a labor overhead cost sharing program for their employers as the gap between minimum wage and anything resembling a fair wage has grown ever larger.

I forgot to add, every special request you make of your server should increase the amount of the tip- including substitutions, detailed inquiries about what is included in the dish you're considering ordering because of your dietary restrictions etc.

The problem is when 20% becomes so common place that it becomes the norm, (which it apparently has) and then 25% is for good service. Until 25% becomes the norm, and anything less is a slap in the face. I watched it creep from 15 to 18 to 20. Now I see receipts that give recommendations with 18, 20, and 22% examples.

I'm all for rewarding service. But if food prices are going up (which they are) then the tip amount is going up too.

And this old man is mad that his typical 20% tip that he's been pleased to give for years is no longer considered good.

"And no, there's nothing about tipping on it"

FTFA:
17. Cheap food does not equal a cheap tip
This issue was most pronounced in the heyday of Groupon and other imitators like the one your friend's cousin was trying to get you to invest in (dodged a bullet there). But the fact remains: Whether it's a coupon, a gift card, or 10-cent wing night, if you paid less for the food, the server didn't do any less work. Tip on the full amount. Especially if the establishment in question has low prices to begin with. If you're busting out the old tip calculator to figure out what exactly 15% of a $19 tab is, you're a mathematically precise monster. Put another way: If you received table service you shouldn't ever be tipping less than two bucks.

My buddy was dating a girl in high school and she did one thing that he absolutely hated. Her family was wealthy, but she would go to this local Mexican restaurant after school, get the complimentary chips/salsa and a glass of water, and eat for free. When she was done, she'd just get up and leave. He only went there once with her and felt so bad about what she was doing he left a $20 tip and told her it was farked up what she was doing. Not sure if she actually started tipping afterward since they broke up a couple weeks after that, but definitely one of the dickest moves I've seen in regards to restaurants.

Ohh and another friend's grandfather would do the "I'm going to place 10 one dollar bills on the table and every time you fark up I'm taking one away" bullshiat. That was embarrassing. Only ever went to a restaurant once with that guy.

I didn't address your opinion, so you don't know what I think of it. I wrote an opinion of your attitude towards others based on the style and tone of your response. An opinion which you just agreed with. It doesn't bother me, though. Yeah unless you're a couple, tipping is your own business.  I might cock an eyebrow at someone who didn't tip at all but otherwise I'm satisfied with what I choose to tip and don't give a rat's ass what anyone else's standard is.

Raging over couples sitting on the same side of a booth?  Someone needs to mind their own business or they won't be getting a tip and yes, we will be staying for coffee and only I will be having dessert.  You want us to hurry up and leave the moment we put our forks down?  This isn't Paris or New York, we didn't pay just to be seen here, we'll take our time thank you.

Not sure if you are one? Ask a friend. Poll other diners.

5. Don't be that couple that sits in the same side of an otherwise empty booth
- oh shut the fark up. we'll sit like we want.

7. A communal table is not an invitation to make new friends
- Sure it is.. not often but it is possible, that's what it's for numbnuts.

16. No lingering in a busy restaurant
- if you order coffee/wine/dessert go ahead and linger. That's why those items are so expensive for what you get.

3. Respect your reservation time
- Don't to to restaurants the require a reservation. just saying.

How many ways is it ok to split the check? This is definitely a peeve of mine. Is it always assumed that any group of friends has a wealthy benefactor among them that has no problem dropping $350 on a meal for everyone? Having said that, I can see how 15 people would be too many.

...I agree with everything else.

2017-08-07 9:47:10 PM
I'm not sure I understand the rule against sitting on the same side of a booth. It doesn't happen much when I go out but I don't see how anyone could be bothered by it. The making out part I could see being awkward. But just sitting there seems harmless.

It mentions the flash on a phone, but what about the people who decide to show you a freaking video with sound and everything?  I've had that pulled on me a number of times recently, it's mortifying, and it takes all the self control I have to not take the phone out of their hands and put it on mute before handing it back.

2017-08-07 9:48:56 PM
I tip 17 or 18%, pretax and that's plenty.  I bet servers don't even know what's 15, 17 or 20%.  They don't have time to figure all that and then remember who gave what.  I don't think I've ever even had a server twice, there's a lot of restaurants out there and alot of turnover in those restaurants.

The best thing about tipping is you're rewarding the person who does the least real work out of the whole staff. Meanwhile, back of the house is doing all the work and still making that same minimum wage (in Ca. at least).

They tried #2 in California. It didn't work. Now, they expect their full wage plus 20%.
