Ya know, he always wanted one of those.

Oh, I'm sure we'll get to hear a lot about how terribly, utterly f*cked Obama was, too

He's actually becoming our president today.

I put the odds that he mentions how amazing he is pretty high.  Sure this man is a hero, but did I mention how I'm just like Lincoln?

Meanwhile, Bonespur Donnie was lucky to survive his own personal Vietnam, barebacking his way through countless models and coke whores in New York's nightclub scene.

HE DESERVES A MEDAL, TOO!

Considering most of them end in agonizing death or agonizing survivor's remorse, they do speak to a level of sacrifice that it difficult to comprehend.  We are fortunate to avoid experiencing the kinds of things one can find in a MOH citation.

Wasn't there a recent recipient who was the first ever to not get the medal posthumously?  Whole lot of "he fell on a grenade to save his friends" kind of things they give these out for.

There have been quite a few issued to survivors of the cited gallantry, including 19 who earned a second MOH for separate action.

But in general "posthumous" is the norm; Sal Giunta was the first living recipient since the Vietnam war when he was recognized in 2010.

Perhaps we'll be treated to his stirring recollection of personal heroism in avoiding injury during his personal Vietnam, the Battle Against Contracting an STD.

Where's yours, D2S?

/Army Service Ribbon.
//A Soldier receives it for completing basic training, just like a Marine receives the Eagle, Globe and Anchor, or an Airman receives the Air Force Traing Ribbon.
///Any/all other awards (CIB, CAR, CAB, NDSM, jump wings, PH, BS, SS, MOH, etc.) can only be received AFTER receiving the ASR/EGA/AFTR.
////It basically says, "I served."

Nice to see that congress found another way to stigginit to Obama before he left.

2017-07-31 01:50:14 PM
Interesting portion from the article:

In 2016, Defense Secretary Ash Carter recommended McCloughan for the Medal of Honor. But since the medal must be awarded within five years of the recipient's actions, Congress needed to pass a bill waiving the time limit. President Barack Obama signed the measure in late 2016, but he didn't get the opportunity to recognize McCloughan with the medal before his term ended this year.

I'm beginning to think Trump might be full of shiat.

I'm surprised Trump didn't reinstate the 5-year limit on the award just to spite Obama.

2017-07-31 01:50:48 PM
I'm glad the guy is receiving the medal. By all counts he truly deserves it. But I can't help but think the selection criteria was extremely political.

White male, smack in the middle of the conservaderp age bracket, from a state narrowly won in 2016.

So, how long until he starts awarding himself medals and dressing like an African dictator?

Nah. He'll talk about how he was hand-selected by Trump to be saved from having to receive a medal from a president that hates the military.

2017-07-31 01:56:35 PM
Does trump even have a speech writer for occasions like this (or any other)? The Google has one recent reference to Stephen Miller, but a little more digging on that name comes up with Senior Advisor to the President and/or Foreign Policy Advisor. Granted writing speeches could fall under either job description.

Then again, I'm talking about someone who's thoughts on everything fit into 140 characters or less, so a speech writer isn't a priority.

Firstly, thank you for your sacrifice & service. Secondly, I would have guessed that ribbon was something LGBTQ related based on the color scheme.

The sitting President has the priveledge and responsibility to award the Medal of Honor to a worthy recipient.  Here's hoping that Trump does it in a dignified and solemn manner.

Doing so doesn't change the fact that he is a farking horrible person.

Holy shiat. I hope this guy was also given a wheelbarrow, to lug around those giant balls of his. Seriously, I can't even imagine those circumstances.

McCloughan was a 23-year-old private first class who had been drafted into the Army when, in 1969, he found himself in the middle of the raging, days long Battle of Hui Yon Hill. McCloughan voluntarily entered the "kill zone" to rescue injured comrades, even as he was pelted with shrapnel from a rocket-propelled grenade

Then he recuperated in hospital with his Lieutenant who unfortunately had his legs blown off. But things turned out well, he founded a successful shrimp boat business, became rich, toured the world playing ping pong and had a kid with his high school sweetheart who tragically died of the aids. Not HIV but full blown AIDS.

These days he give his time to the town by cutting grass at the local high school football field.

It's a beautiful story. I hope someone makes a movie about it.
