El_Perro: Magnitsky Act

In 2009, Russian lawyer and auditor Sergei Magnitsky died in a Moscow prison after investigating fraud involving Russian tax officials. While in prison, Magnitsky developed gall stones, pancreatitis and calculous cholecystitis and was refused medical treatment for months. Finally, after almost a year of imprisonment and on the verge of death, Magnitsky was transferred to a Moscow hospital. There he was greeted not by a doctor but by a number of Russian OMON who bludgeoned him to death.

In response to the adoption of the Magnitsky Act, the Russian government denied Americans adoption of Russian children, issued a list of US officials prohibited from entering Russia, and posthumously convicted Magnitsky as guilty.

So I'm reading the wiki link and thinking, well...it's wikipedia...I mean even Russians wouldn't...

And then you get to the second bolded part, and that's when you know it's true.  They totally would.  They totally did.

fark the entire nest of vipers and mob thugs running that place, and anyone who tries to cozy up to them.

Deny talking to Russians at the exact same time Russia is dicking with our election to the benefit of your father, then when called on it you say it was about adoption.

People are stupid enough to believe that, or corrupt/partisan enough to pretend they believe that.

Who's going to have to break the news to Trump that getting a mail order bride is not the same as adoption.

I have a friend who adopted 2 deaf kids from Russia in about 2006 or so I guess. She's desf her husband at the time was desf but also bipolar and crazy and snapped shortly after the kids got here. Anyway, she got out and stabilized but the kids...they were never right. The boy was 8 or so when she got him and he was just...damaged. like you hear how babies who aren't touched develop strangely, that kind of thing.

Anyway, that's my not so cool story, Vlad.

In his statement, Donald Trump Jr. said: "It was a short introductory meeting. I asked Jared and Paul to stop by. We primarily discussed a program about the adoption of Russian children that was active and popular with American families years ago and was since ended by the Russian government, but it was not a campaign issue at the time and there was no follow up."
He added: "I was asked to attend the meeting by an acquaintance, but was not told the name of the person I would be meeting with beforehand."

Not only did he lie, but he is stunningly horrible at lying. Like really, really bad at it. I'm not expecting him to be Walken's dad from True Romance, but Christ on a bike he just sucks at it. None of that sounds remotely plausible.

I really wish our "intelligence agencies" would hurry up and bury these disgraceful f*ckers, but I am told to be patient...these things take time. I am just terrified time is not on our side with these...these...f*ck it, I don't even have the words anymore.

Mueller is a partisan and will do whatever he can to make sure Republicans retain controller of our government.  He is going to prosecute the Trump's, but only in a way that doesn't harm Pence or the party as a whole.

change is inevitable - that isn't what I am struggling with

I have developed a sort of despair that our nation is being aligned on the wrong side of the global changes currently taking place - sort of the opposite of where we stood during WWII.

I think we've already been sold down the river and deals have been made and I just want some one of you who may be more optimistic right now to offer an alternative.

I'm a huge paranoid depressive anti-Trump, but I have faith that, while we will be fundamentally changed, the nation will survive. (Even if I'd rather see CA splinter off, if I could be assured a refugee right to return.) We've survived much MUCH worse. Further, I have faith in the professional officers of the US military to keep Cheeto Mussolini from doing something *catastrophically* stupid.

Hell, if I allow myself a bit of unusual optimism, that fundamental change might we'll  mean we might just come out better, with single payer, better voter protection and voting processes, and more protection from an autocratic government forming. But that's gonna take pain and time. A *lot* of pain and time.

But I really do think we'll survive. Just have to hope on the individual level that neither you nor anyone you care about gets crushed by the chaos and evil in the meantime.

And, yeah, the Mueller investigation will bear fruit. Though that could be a double edged sword, as there may be a farmers market full of fruit delivered, only to have us watch in horror as the (R)s in charge let it rot in the street. We'll see.

What will happen is the U.S. will become more explosive internally as we isolate ourselves.

Note that this argument is so dumb because the program was not shuttered by the Kremlin but Congress who banned the adoptions. So Trump Jr., Kushner, and Manafort met with this lawyer about potentially ending the Maginsky Act, but it was not in their capacity of representing Trump or any sort of political operation.

We will survive if we don't give up. It might be the most difficult thing you've ever done in your life to have hope, knowing that it might be taken away, but to live in that fear is to give in to the people who are preying on the old and terrified.

To trust some other people in power see how much is wrong with this administration. That Mueller will make a compelling enough case. That Trump will die in office.

I'm sorry to say that. If it gets me on some list, okay. It's wrong, I know that. Resignation would be fine.
