Hai, everyone!  TGIC!  Cracker Jack would say hai, too, but he's too busy alternating between begging for skritches and trying to eat my hand when I attempt to give him said skritches.

I seriously need some tips on how to get one of my cat's weight down.  They're both ginormous tomcats, but one just fat.  He's also the alpha cat, so he eats the other cat's food when the beta's not looking.  They're both eating Hill's metabolic formula.  Only thing I can think to do is physically separate them while eating.  Lock them in separate rooms with food.  Let them out after an hour.  Pull the food up.  No more food for 12 hours.

Thoughts?

Happy Caturday!

The inferno has arrived in Arizona.  It was 122° on Tuesday and 119° Wednesday.  It's supposed to be "only" 110° today.

The heat has deactivated the cats.  They are out almost 18 hours a day and do very little besides eat, drink and nap.  Which doesn't make for especially good photos.  Here is Voodoo cuddled with Hex's butt:

This is what Hex looks like:

The one source of relief is the ice tray.  I have a glass baking tray on the floor and I fill a stainless mixing bowl with water every day and freeze it.  When the heat starts getting nasty in the mid-afternoon, the ice goes in the tray.  The cats adore it.  Ouija has been particularly cute.  I got him around the middle of October last year, after the ice tray had been put away for the fall and he didn't know what it was.  So after I put out the ice, I called him over.  Ouija put a paw on the ice and "got" it immediately.  He hangs out next to the tray all afternoon and sometimes puts his chin on the ice.  Here are a couple photos of Ouija enjoying something cold:

Can you feed one on the counter, one on the floor? We used to have to stand in between my Moms kittehs to keep one from stealing the others food. We would pull it off the floor and set it back down for her when she was sharking for food later on.

Hi.  My physical therapist told me that the brain can't really process pain from more than one pain-source at a time.

IT'S A LIE!

I bet 35 pound kitty would agree.

I went here https://www.sciencemuseumok.org/  and saw this:

img.fark.netView Full Size

I was able to explain to my son there all the surgery I've had and what they're proposing to do to me next.  They even had a spinal column with herniated disks.  Three human fetuses. Thought provoking. Saw a planetarium show written for nine-year-olds with an audience maybe averaging age 10.  Then mostly watched giant marble race gadgets while my son acted 10 again.  He's old enough and functional enough that I didn't have to accompany him.  But young enough at heart to enjoy almost everything they had there.

It is hard to count the marbles in those giant marble race things, they're so big and complex.  I think I ended up accepting that I could not be sure.

They had some great train, aviation and space exhibits.  Downside of the place is that there were small children by the millions and every one sticky and smelling of pee.

Felt bad that the dog ended up crated longer than ever...5 hours.  He did not blame us for being away so long.  Cats are being clingy so they noticed too.  Pixel doesn't want me typing.

I think if I'm up to traveling, we're going to see the eclipse in Kearney MO, where Jesse James was born and buried.  A distant relative. Maybe at one of those two actual spots. (I assume he wasn't buried exactly where he was born?)  How bad will traffic be? People flock from all over the world to see total eclipses in REMOTE places.

I feed them on different levels of their cat tree.  Thin cat up top.  Fat cat two levels down.  We did that because of the dog, who would eat any food on the floor.  Put her down a few weeks ago, so I have options, as far as positioning.

Problem is, the thin cat eats half his food and takes a nap.  Fat cat eats half his food, goes for the thin cat's food, then takes a nap.  At that point it's a race for the remainder of the fat cat's food.  Fat cat usually wins.  Maybe I put less in the thin cat's bowl?  (He's not sickly thin.  Just by comparison, he looks emaciated.)

foo monkey: I seriously need some tips on how to get one of my cat's weight down. ...

I bought a OneFastCat in hopes of getting Pixel in particular more active. He liked to sit on it. Only the already-thin cat Hoshi used it and she used it less and less as time went on. Finally I had to be right there with the laser pointer to get her to run on it.  The elderly cat would not even get near it for any bribe.  Cotterpin thought she was just all that if she ran on it for fifteen seconds.  I just sold it to get the space back.  I'm not saying it won't work for you, just that it turned out not to work for my four.  Bengals seem to love it.  I sold mine for $60 and they go new for $200 plus shipping and are REALLY a pain to put together.

I had full siblings, both male Maine Coon types, and one was just hugely fat from late kittenhood and one was big-boned but thin.  The huge one ended up losing weight way too fast at age 15, when his thyroid went awry. They're both gone now.  They ate exactly the same food and nothing I ever tried to help the fat one lose worked.  I suspect the answer is a lot more complex than just how you feed.  I guess first stop needs to be the vet, in hopes there is an easy answer.  If nothing else, there IS the sanitary cut for when they get so big they stop grooming themselves.

2017-06-22 8:17:10 PM
$140 for a food dish is too much for me but going on my list of NOT-A-LUXURY items to get some day.  They'd quickly learn!  Cheaper than vet care for middle-aged and elderly cats who have been overweight so long it's causing problems.  Cotterpin is definitely starting to get round...she is always convinced she will starve if she doesn't eat all the food.

2017 Hyundai Tuscon AWD. After the rebates and my (excellent) trade-in, my payments are only 25.00 more a month that what I do now.  I wasn't really looking, but after last winter with all the slipping and sliding, I thought I should look into AWD, but I was going to wait a year, or so. Anyway....yeah....this same one! Pretty, huh? Bigger than what I'm used to, though.

Type under myself while listen to EchoLink net, they all on re Field Day natch.  2P Eastern time Sat to same time Sun.
Agree physical separation may not be bad idea, if you've rooms & space to do so.  Some who live here are a bit hefty, but don't need cut back that far.  Only feed every 12 hrs isn't something we do.  You may get some Truly Inspired suggestions ...
