That's more rouble than it's worth.

FTFA: The site contains an estimated one billion roubles ($18m; £13.5m at current exchange rates, or $33.3m at the "official" Soviet rate in 1991) ... "I wish I could have a time machine, return with a pack of those banknotes and buy myself a controlling stake in Google ...

Yeah, I think a controlling stake in Google is a little more than $18M.

Did you miss the part about the time machine?

One or two, and the story, are a nice historical relic, though.

That swamp Trump wants to drain? It's called the US treasury.

Should use for cigar wraps...

I'd dry it and use it to light my smokes.

They said I was daft to hide my rubles in a swamp

It's their version of city parks and public swimming pools... Russia's a pretty depressing place.

If you find some abandoned rubles, maybe you should leave them where they lie.

Good for sealing up drafty windows.  True story. (A 3 ruble note, even.)

TFA says a billion rubles would be worth $18 million... or worthless.  Well, if these are 1991 or before (Soviet) rubles, they're worthless.  There was a period of hyperinflation and now Russia uses a "new" ruble.  So these really are a completely different currency from the current one.

It really makes me think if all of this is just an illusion.

I don't know if it's a depressing place or not.  I am curious though.  I'd love to see Russia without government politics, propaganda, dash cam footage of wrecks and mass fear filters. It's a huge country and I bet it varies a lot just as the US does.

There are vast areas, as in the size of the US , that are beautiful.

When they said I could make a million rubles for being a Russian troll, I didn't even think to ask.  They didn't even validate my parking, come to think of it.

A group of explorers in Russia have found around a billion roubles in old Soviet money at an abandoned mine, but it's all completely worthless.

Much like the story.

/ and the term "explorers" apparently

I guess that makes them commie ruble rousers

Lord knows how many short stories/comics/tvshows I saw growing up where a "treasure hunt" resulted in a cache of Confederate dollars.

Once found a 50 dollar bill at the foot of a drunken asshat, finders keepers.

Billions? a swamp? this swamp didn't happen to be called Washington, DC, did it?

Well, that was my first thought.

Putin should send a few barrels of the stuff to Trump. I hear Republicans love commie dictators nowadays. Lenin or Stalin ought to go over a treat, or should I say, a Tweet, with the twittering twits of Swamp Washington.

I'm guessing it's possible that the elderly locals were correct in that the mine might have been contaminated at one time, but they probably didn't know the radioactive material's half life (if they even knew what it was).

Either way, it's a convenient place to dump something you don't want to reappear for a little while.

Them guys are dumb. You got to learn to play the guitar on the MTV if you want your money for nothing.

If the notes were in good condition they'd probably be worth something to collectors, especially the high denomination ones.

Looks like they've turned to sludge though. Maybe a few can be salvaged.

2017-05-30 07:22:31 AM
The hell they're worthless. Memorabilia, raw material for hipster art projects, gag gifts.... Ebay is your friend.

And once again, if you find a large pile of something out in the woods you can use for money: take it and shut your mouth.
