So the next time I get a ticket from customer who didn't properly scale their system and do load testing, I'm going to tell them it was a DDOS attack and close the ticket.

Actually, knowing the sort of connections our Republican friends have over in Russia, it's entirely possible that the DDOS attack was started to prevent most of us from leaving our comments on that site.

It was a very specific DDOS attack, targeted at the comment system.

It amazing that people say the government is so inept it can't manage the simplest tasks, yet the government was tech savvy enough to DDoS themselves to thwart the comments coming in from John Oliver's viewers.

Either republicans are hur-dur inbred retards from the south, or they are intelligent tech savvy people, they can't be both depending on what your narrative calls for. They are not the Borg and this is not Star Trek.

So they can't see it when the Russians thump the RNC, DNC and Hillary's campaign emails, but they can see this as a plain and simple DDOS by evil trolls who are trying to force everyone to support socialism net neutrality, which is evil and horrible for reasons that have things to do with freedom and not money.

From what I read in TFA, it seems more like there was indeed a traffic spike after Oliver's show.  Good.  Whatever happened after that, may have been a DDOS.  It may not have been.  Even if it was, Oliver did not call on some hacker commanding a fleet of bots to attack the site.  You can't blame him for that.

It's possible that they were hit with DDOS attacks aside from the cumulative effect of all the comments.  Those two are not mutually-exclusive.

A properly configured, load-tested and scaled website/comment system shouldn't crash from the kind of load that would be generated by a portion of John Oliver's audience using it over the course of the hours that it took for the segment to run across the country and eventually spread on the Internet. It's very likely that some botnet operators decided to ddos them for the lulz after hearing about the segment. It would definitely be easy to determine if that's what happened from the logs.

/It's also possible the site is a poorly built piece of crap that crashed as soon as it experienced it's first significant load and they're lying about it.

Of all the things that have been idiotically polarized by parties, Net Neutrality is not among them.

This should be obvious, but it's only supporters are corporations and their shills, there is no reason for any non-corporate/non-corporate-sponsored-politician to stand behind this, no matter which way one leans.

If they can determine that a set of IPs were hitting their service and maybe not loading assets (images, stylesheets, etc) that a human user's browser would load, and/or if the payloads the suspected clients were sending to the form was clearly garbage, they probably have grounds to say there was a DDoS attack.

And this is the FCC, probably no stranger to probes and attacks.  They probably already have software in place to detect that happening... (probably, this is the govt we're talking about so there's a chance they don't)

Trying to link that attack to John Oliver telling people to contact the FCC, would be total BS though.

D-DOS?  I stopped using DOS back around version 5.1, so I am not up on all these modern computering thingys.

Liberals are in favor of net neutrality. That's all the reason conservatives need to not just oppose net neutrality but to also hate it with every fiber of their beings.
