They think it's a "poke in the eye"?

How about all the...you know what, f*ck it. Let them whine about it. Christians have had their way for entirely too long. Pushback from the public is neither oppression nor persecution.

I don't know, and I'm a Christian. "No atheists in foxholes," maybe?

Sounds like they took two quotes from people who are mildly opposed to it.

It's a public space, not a house of worship of a particular religion. They're not demanding space in some Episcopal Church's memorial garden.

No atheists in foxholes? My mom's years in Berlin ('44-'45) pretty much terminated her belief in a supreme being. I think it depends on how long you spend in the foxhole and much farked up stuff you see while you're in there.

The only problem I have with it is that it is disingenuous.  It is likely being done by atheists instead of true followers of Satan.  Even so, how would you feel about the Satanic temple declaring Adolf Hitler a prophet and putting swastikas on the monument?

I have no problem with Jews, Muslims, Hindus, Buddhists, and (dare I say it) even Scientologists putting up their own monuments.  If the atheists want to put up a monument, then it should be secular if it is to be genuine.

Because this doesn't seem to be someone putting up the 10 commandments at the courthouse because, goshdurnit, this here's a Christian nation and the ebil forces of secularism need to be warded off by totem magic!

It seems to be an innocently-intended memorial, trading on established iconography and cultural customs; tread lightly. Speak for the non-christians, by all means, but save the shock-slinging, attention-whoring lampoons for something that doesn't involve dead kids. It's not always about you.

It's both.

From the article:

"Doug Mesner-who uses the pseudonym Lucian Greaves-is the founder of the Satanic Temple and its non-profit group Reason Alliance.
He says the group does not worship Satan..."

There are people who like to rape babies.  There are people who like to carve up women and make flesh suits out of their bodies.  There are lots of VERY evil people in the world.  Therefore, I have no doubt that there are true worshipers of Satan.  They just aren't these types of attention-whores.

As I said before, this group of assholes only chose Satanic symbols to specifically piss people off.  They could just as easily have picked swastikas, but they actually take WW2 seriously unlike religion.  They are mocking religion.  That is all.

If the Wiccans want to put up monuments, then that's fine.  If the Jews want to put up a Star of David, then that's great too.  If an atheist wants to erect a crucifix directly in front of a Jewish temple or a mosque, just to be an asshole, then that is not ok.

I'm not sure of anyone in my life that's a Satanist, so I hit up wiki. My understanding is that Satanists follow a left-hand path, and that left hand path includes "question[ing] religious or moral dogma, instead adhering to forms of personal anarchism". So I'm not sure being a Satanist would preclude trolling Christians or the local government/community. Wiki also describes "reactionary Satanism" as something between antisocial behavior and trolling that you'd expect from a teen or psychopath.

There are plenty of nonreligious memorials.  They're called memorials.  There's this wall that has a bunch of names on it from the Vietnam War.  There are these things called gravestones.  There are statues.  There are all kinds of things.  The only things that make a memorial "religious" are the markings and symbolism of it.

I am all for freedom of speech, but I would have no problem with a cemetery rejecting a gravestone that said, "Joe Blow - Hated n***ers.  Glad to be free from them now."  (replace n... with fa**ots if you prefer)

That's basically what these people are trying to erect.

It's not a church. It's a park.  There shouldn't be any religious monuments in public spaces.  If any are allowed, then they must all be allowed.  Especially the  most absurd... Because RELIGION IS ABSURD.

So everything I learned about Satan comes from a Fark thread, but isn't he actually the good guy?

It was my understanding that god told Lucifer to be a dick, eventually Lucifer said no, and then god got all pissy and threw Lucifer out of heaven.  Over the years people have just clung to the notion that, "If god says Lucifer is dick, then he must really be a dick and we hate him" even though god was the one who told him to be a dick in the first place.

That's where you crossed the line.  Religious monuments are not messages of hate.  A public park is not the place to erect a statue that says, "All LGBT people are going to burn in Hell!"  The existing religious monuments are positive symbols.  A cross doesn't tell a Jew, a Hindu, a Muslim, a Scientologist, or an atheist that they are despised of.  This proposed monument says that to ALL of them.  That is the difference.
