How about the red welfare states start pulling their weight, then we'll talk? Don't drag us down with you.

Why are the places with no jobs called working class states?

That... is a good question.

Here'a a clue: stop being racist, xenophobic religious nutbags. Maybe we can talk then.

So I actually read TFA all the way to the end. I know, what was I thinking, right?

The premise of the article is that economic power is moving not to dense city cores, but to suburban areas, and the point it wants to make to progressives is to put up contests for middle-class suburbia and not dismiss their lifestyle. So the headline is (surprise!) inaccurate.

But then, I guess it's been a whole day or two now since we've had a thread to let everyone shiat on the working-class people who used to be the reason Democrats won elections and don't anymore, so I guess it's time to do that thread again.

I don't think red states are arrogant. They're not smart enough for that.

But seriously, they have legitimate complaints on how Democrat and Republican Washington has addressed their concerns over the past 35 years. Liberals should recognize that.

Those working class people just took a shiat on all the progress that was made to help them.   They, literally, bit the hand that fed them.

They keep biting it as well, which is astounding to me.

How can someone so blindly support politicians who actively work to destroy their lives?

Dumb people are the effing worst.

Dumb people are OK. It's the ones that think they're smart or can't accept the fact they are the source and perpetuation of their own misery that are dangerous.

Lot of anti-Democrat articles, even with conservatives having control of all three branches of government. It means they're ashamed of their Orange Trumpenfuhrer, so they're deflecting with strawman arguments because they have literally no accomplishment to be proud of.

upholding the constitution is not a mfing "lifestyle"

also, rednecks are the most arrogant people on earth.

and btw all poor people loose in our economy, don't matter where you live.

White rightwingers: Why are Black so lazy and don't do the things so they can get a job!!!

Left wingers: Jobs like coal and manufacturing are gone now and never coming back maybe you guys should build up your colleges so you can get high paying jobs of now and the future

White rightwingers: SHUT UP ELITIST WHY DO YOU THINK YOU CAN TALL OTHER WHAT TO DO? Now lets get back talking about all those lazy minorities who won't get jobs!!!

Dumb people think that the President should be just like them, basically created in their image. It's kind of like a Dunning-Kruger God Complex. Captain Dipsh*t was the closest thing to that because, despite his access to the trappings that a legitimate billionaire would have, he talks like a third grader. The rubes eat that up.

Exactly. Wisdom begins with the recognition of one's own ignorance. People who can't accept the need to learn are unable to grow past their inevitable limitations.

2017-05-01 11:22:49 AM
see that's the thing, the willfully ignorant red states' constituencies are tired of 'being talked down to, like they're inferior'.

YOU ARE INFERIOR, THAT'S WHY.  YOUR CONSERVATIVE MANTRA OF 'NOTHING MUST CHANGE EVER FOR ANY REASON' IS THE VERY ANTITHESIS OF ADAPTABILITY - THE HUMAN RACE'S MOST IMPORTANT CHARACTERISTIC.

Want to stop hearing about how stupid you are?  Try not being so goddamned stupid.

I tried, you know, but the smug "blue bourgeois" attitude and the writer's complete lack of knowledge about why there is a red/blue split in places like California turned me right off. Sorru.

Since we're talking about arrogance, how about the arrogance of Red state Americans being the only "real Americans".

It means "white" and usually "male"

There's millions of POC making shiat wages in labor-intensive service industry jobs (think healthcare workers and such).

Why are they never considered "working class?" 🤔🤔🤔

What progress was that? Are you sitting there thinking that when people have a job, and the plant closes, that they want job retraining and food stamps and subsidized day care?

They want another job that pays like the old one did. Not help from the government.

The only thing people ever asked for from the Democratic party was to prevent their employers from taking excessive advantage of them. As long as they were doing that, nobody ever asked any questions about social progress. But now that Democrats don't put any effort into making sure that people with jobs can even keep them, without having to move or learn unfamiliar technology, they don't have those voters anymore.

So, if the Democratic party wants to write off entire states and have a constant disadvantage in governors' offices and US House representation, what's anyone supposed to do to stop them?

I actually had a conservative think that blue states somehow just got lucky with all tech jobs in their states and they were being unfair to the red states for just  profiting without them.

I tried to explain to her the reason why blue states have so many high paying tech jobs has a lot to do with those blue state policies that the right rejects in red states and her head could not accept that.

She couldn't connect trying to keep business like coal/manufacturing and not investing in colleges had any effect on not having tech jobs.

Seriously, this.

God, Guns, and Gays. Those are the issues rural America cares about, because they're presented to the common clay as simple issues with simple, black and white solutions.

For example, I have a coworker who believes in universal healthcare, higher taxes on the wealthy, free education etc. Why'd he vote for Trump? Abortion and guns.

2017-05-01 11:26:10 AM
I've been listening to my family and acquaintances I grew up with saying that we'd be better off if we nuked Los Angeles and New York and gave California back to Mexico since I was 12, and that Texas and Arkansas could survive as independent countries if only they had the chance.  .

That's a few decades past.

I don't think Blue states have the market cornered on arrogance.

I don't have much affection for Red-State America. And they don't seem to have much affection for me. However, I'm not trying to legislate which bathroom they pee in. I'm not trying to take away their health insurance. I'm not trying to put restrictions on who they marry. I'm not trying to make pre-natal care less accessible. I'm not trying to cut their SNAP benefits. So while our dislike may be mutual, only one side is on the attack.

Because at some point it would mean they have to accept their own role in their current situation.

It's way easier to blame "the government" and "Mexicans" for all of your problems, while simultaneously identifying, unironically, as a member of "the party of personal responsibility."

The AFFORDABLE CARE ACT (aka ObamaCare) which somehow just became more popular when the unwashed, salt of the earth, morons realized they got a handout (but won't admit it).

Economic justice is only route forward for both groups.

FTFA= "They might seek to give the unwashed red masses "cake" in the form of free health care and welfare, but they don't offer more than a future status as serfs of the cognitive aristocracy."

So healthcare and welfare is "abandoning the red voters".  Let's not forget that the Democrats also have large chunks of their platform devoted to reducing the cost of college and boosting retraining efforts, thus helping that same group join "The cognitive aristocracy"

Meanwhile, let's look at the policies submitted by Trump and the Republicans to aid this same group.  There's um, well, uh. Ok, help me out here?

This is just Yet Another Article decrying how the Democrats have given up on everybody other than rich urban liberals, in utter contrast to their actual policies and platform.  But hey, those things require work, and it's easier to just believe the conman-in-chief and wait for the manna from heaven.

So, let me get this straight. You're all about the free market and open competition until you're not?

Democrats tried to help, but working people didn't like the answer because the answer was obtaining actual marketable skills.

2017-05-01 11:27:40 AM
Labor stock is good for lifting, hauling, and digging.  Some have argued that they prefer it to other work because of the simplicity and routine.  Unfortunately, doing that sort of thing these days requires a fair amount of education and training and there are fewer opportunities.  You have this entire population of lifters and haulers with nothing to lift and haul for the first time in human history.

Now, of course there is always work to be done, like repairing roads, plumbing, stringing cable, but there's a matter of anyone wanting to pay for it.  No one in history has ever really wanted to pay for that sort of thing and now people have ways not to.  It would be advantageous to get thousands of the beasts of burden into classrooms and teach them those magic computer boxes and how to follow plans and learn the math behind basic plumbing or electrical work, but the labor stock doesn't want that anymore than the already skilled labor wants to compete with them.

So you think the primary policy if the Democratic Party should be to ban all technololgic progress, and to ensure that every job remains exactly as it is.
