So if we're going to go after Devos, we should point out that charter schools don't work, and that teacher unions have never been more popular among Republicans.

I liked Devos back when they wore funny hats and sang about whips.

culebra: rynthetyn: Lackofname: DeVos demonstrated multiple times just how nutty and disastrous she is.

She declined to back public, public charter and private schools from all having the same accountability standards.

And here she is derping through Al Franken's questions.

I suspect that this also means that she believes that homeschoolers can lock their kids in the basement and teach them nothing but the Bible and it's all good, since they don't get any federal money.

I took it to be even worse: that the homeschool parents can pull that shiat while  receiving federal funding and be held to a different standard than everyone else because Jesus. It's why he was trying to get her to specifically say that all schools should be held to the same civil rights standards. She refused to.

That's entirely possible too, though the homeschool lobby traditionally freaks the fark out over any homeschoolers taking even a penny of taxpayer money because that means they might have to follow some sort of standard. The big national homeschool lobbying org even fights against homeschool sports participation in public school athletics, because even the blessed virgin Tim Tebow isn't proof enough that somebody somewhere might use sports participation to make sure you teach your kid something.

Maggie Hassan also had a moment of dumbstruck silence when DeVos clearly had no idea that the Americans with Disabilities Act is a federal law that exists.

Too bad Republicans are cowards and wouldn't allow extended questioning so that the full committee could further discuss what it means to Betsy to be a Christian Warrior, and what that entails for the direction Education will take with her at the helm.

Yup.

Charter Schools basically exist when you combine unhappy parents with teachers unions.

The parents want to get their kids away from "Those kids" , and can't use geography to do it, and the Conservative Education reformers want to crush the unions.

if you just have the first, no charters.
If you just have the second... well, Vermont doesn't even have a Charter law.

Because charters aren't about education, they're about peer group selection.

I think a lot of Trump's cabinet picks think being a cabinet member is like being on the Board of Directors. You get sent some papers to review every so often, show up for a yearly meeting, say "I want this and that" and then head to the golf course.

She clearly had never even heard of the issue that Al Franken raised. I think she's surprised that she's expected to know these things.

WTF?  I grew up in farking Alaska and we didn't worry about grizzly bears laying siege to schools because it NEVER Happens. You see a bear, you go inside until it goes away.

I did once open the door to go to school and found a giant moose rear end 3 feet from my front door.  The moose swung it's enormous head and looked right at me, so I did what any reasonable kid would do:  I slammed the door, locked it, called my mom crying "I can't go to school there's a moose in the front yard".

Man, that was back in the day.  Elementary school kids were expected to get up and walk a half mile on top of frozen snow berms in below zero weather to school by themselves.  none of this snowflake shiat.

culebra: This entire hearing was a travesty. She is so far out of her depth it's unbelievable. Oh and here's a little something to keep you up at night: she's Erik Prince's sister. Yes, the same Erik Prince who went to ground after Blackwater got caught doing all sorts of nasty shiat in Iraq. He's back as an "adviser" to Trump.

Anyhow, Franken, Kaine, Warren and Sanders went in pretty hard on her, but she kept grinning and bullshiatting enough that she'll get confirmed. A woman that doesn't believe that all schools receiving federal funding should have to equally abide by civil rights laws is going to be the next SecEd.

It was depressing watching her sneer at their questions and evade a straight answer.  She has so much contempt for her opponents that it's scary.  This is the face of 'Christian' Dominionism.

Here's a link that discusses the sinister agenda behind homeschooling.  Christian Dominionist Reconstruction ideology was controlled for decades by J Rushdoony, who aggressively promoted homeschooling as the most effective way of controlling the minds of his future followers.  People who wanted to homeschool their children for non-religious reasons have discovered that once they 'plug into' the homeschooling community, almost all of the available materials are severely religious, and secular parents are ostracized unless they pander at least a little bit to the religious agenda.

The "Buy Belize" thing was resurrected a few years ago, if it ever really went away.

One of my partners "invested" close to $2 million in some shady real estate development venture. The sales pitch was that when Obama destroyed America, millions of people would try to flee to Belize, they'd all need housing, and you'd already be set up to rule a Potterville of desperate exiles willing to fork over huge sums to find safe refuge. Because of limited supply and overwhelming demand, the owners could name their price, and only accept "desirables".

He recruited at least one other colleague, who I heard sunk about $400,000 into the banana republic Galt's Gulch.

The best part: these folks are goddamned doctors. Surgeons, who by dint of their superior intellect and judgment are entrusted with peoples' lives and well-being.  Oh well.

It would not surprise me in the least if the ringleaders of the scam switch gears and start marketing to people terrified of the impending Reich of Twitler.

She absolutely did, right at the end. It was about the only time she gave a direct answer.

CNN: Sen. Patty Murray, the top Democrat on the Senate committee considering DeVos' nomination, asked the Michigan Republican whether she would consider the actions described on the tape -- "kissing and touching women and girls without their consent," she said paraphrasing Trump -- to be sexual assault.
"Yes," DeVos answered simply.

That couldn't have made Trump very happy.

SoupGuru: Who was it back in the day that countered the "large magazines + semi automatic assault rifle aren't useful for anything more than killing lots of humans" argument with "are you crazy? Have you ever tried hunting feral hogs without one?!"

Basically, if you can find one semi legit reason for a gun (you may have to squint),  you've just destroyed any argument against you.

I was the "human hunting" side of that conversation. Can't remember who replied. But it may help your search. Part of his/her biatch was also that changing clips in the cold was some sort of horrendous struggle.

Soup4Bonnie: Franken hits her with an easy question if she's prepared.  She's not.  About 1:30 in.

She wasn't clear on the difference in "growth" and "proficiency". Mr. Franken tried to give her a quick lesson, but I think she stared right through him.
