Who was it back in the day that countered the "large magazines + semi automatic assault rifle aren't useful for anything more than killing lots of humans" argument with "are you crazy? Have you ever tried hunting feral hogs without one?!"

Basically, if you can find one semi legit reason for a gun (you may have to squint),  you've just destroyed any argument against you.

She actually has a point. I mean, many schools have come a long way regarding defending themselves against armed intruders -- metal detectors, for example, are increasingly commonplace. But most grizzly bears would be able to pass through a metal detector without setting off any alarms, because their normal weaponry (teeth, claws) are not metallic in nature. So the school's defensive systems could be working entirely within normal parameters and a grizzly could still end up inside the school itself. This isn't even even taking into consideration any possible collaboration between the grizzly and students themselves, who might wish harm upon other students and form some sort of pact with the bear (one possible scenario being leaving a normally locked door propped for the bear's easy access). So what happens if it's lunchtime and such a grizzly breach occurs? One bear in a crowded cafeteria could inflict incalculable harm. I'm also fairly certain that most SWAT and other rapid-response units who would arrive as first responders do not regularly train in counter-grizzly tactics, which could lead to catastrophic delays in their actual entry of the building as they plan and strategize. Does anyone need to be reminded of what happened at Columbine when such delays took place? Some might argue that the fact that no such attack has ever happened is evidence that it never well, but "head in sand" is not a plan. Before 9-11, passenger planes were not viewed as weapons. Then everything changed. Do we really want to be playing catch up with this threat?

Trump's Education Secretary Nominee Struggles In Hearing
Betsy DeVos, Donald Trump's nominee for education secretary, weathered an unusually contentious confirmation hearing Tuesday night, where she stumbled over several basic questions about education policy and denied she served on a board of a private foundation that donated to anti-LGBT causes, despite years of tax filings that indicated otherwise.

Betsy DeVos, Trump's Pick for Education Secretary, Won't Rule Out Defunding Public Schools
Other answers DeVos gave were less clear.
Former Democratic presidential candidate Bernie Sanders pressed DeVos on whether she'd support tuition-free college -a central pillar of his 2016 campaign. DeVos was non-committal.
"Senator, I think that's a really interesting idea," she said, adding that "we also have to think about the fact that there's nothing in life that's truly free."

Education secretary pick Betsy DeVos called bold reformer, unfit for job in divided hearing

Joseph Lieberman, the Democratic nominee for vice president in 2000, introduced DeVos on Tuesday and vouched for her leadership, arguing that her status as an outsider is an asset.
...
GOP senators cheered DeVos' nomination, saying they hope she will champion alternatives to the nation's public schools and scale back the federal footprint in K-12 education.
...
He restricted senators to one five-minute round of questions, saying he was adhering to committee precedent and the "golden rule," treating Trump's pick as the committee treated Obama's nominees. Democrats were dismayed, arguing that the committee has never before cut off questions, and that they needed more time to examine DeVos' record.

How Betsy DeVos Used God and Amway to Take Over Michigan Politics

Thanks to the DeVoses, Michigan's charter schools enjoy a virtually unregulated existence. Thanks to them, too, the center of the American automotive industry and birthplace of the modern labor movement is now a right-to-work state. They've funded campaigns to elect state legislators, established advocacy organizations to lobby them, buttressed their allies and primaried those they disagree with, spending at least $100 million on political campaigns and causes over the past 20 years. "The DeVos family has been far more successful not having the governor's seat than if they had won it," says Richard Czuba, the owner of the Glengariff Group, a bipartisan polling firm in Michigan. "They have, to some degree, created a shadow state party. And it's been pretty darn effective."

This entire hearing was a travesty. She is so far out of her depth it's unbelievable. Oh and here's a little something to keep you up at night: she's Erik Prince's sister. Yes, the same Erik Prince who went to ground after Blackwater got caught doing all sorts of nasty shiat in Iraq. He's back as an "adviser" to Trump.

Anyhow, Franken, Kaine, Warren and Sanders went in pretty hard on her, but she kept grinning and bullshiatting enough that she'll get confirmed. A woman that doesn't believe that all schools receiving federal funding should have to equally abide by civil rights laws is going to be the next SecEd.

The Republicans on the committee even had to invent a rule to invoke on the spot to prevent more intensive questioning of the woman set to be in charge of a trillion dollar bankroll, and who has no experience in public education or banking,

They actively conspired to obfuscate the utter unfitness of this vapid woman. Just another day at the office for the GOP I suppose.

I took it to be even worse: that the homeschool parents can pull that shiat while  receiving federal funding and be held to a different standard than everyone else because Jesus. It's why he was trying to get her to specifically say that all schools should be held to the same civil rights standards. She refused to.

I don't use this term often, but Trump is cancer. No matter what, a malignant desiccation is going to spread to every corner of the government. Even if Trump is impeached soon after inauguration, his cabinet is going to stick around. We're going to be set back so many years.

There is a real potential for things to go off the rails, and fast in the way you describe. I am only holding off on connecting the dots because I don't really want to endanger my own sanity too much, but deep down I know who Trump has surrounded himself with and that what they are up to has nothing to do with anything that will increase the cohesiveness of the nation. We're in for rough times whatever the destination.
