I dont have anything to say bout this article, just wanted to get a chance to say; "Say it aint sooo Goose'! Don't retire yet big Tony, the Ravens kinda suck this year, but they can just count on being down righty farkin crappy next season without you as defensive tackle. Say it ain't so Goose!!
2002-01-04 10:56:53 AM
I thought political correctness died long ago.
2002-01-04 10:58:52 AM
Dobbler - you're shiatting me right? Please tell me that was sarcasm
2002-01-04 11:02:23 AM
who routinely surfs the DMV's Web site to check for offensive plates

Some people obviously have more time on their hands than fb

This kind of shiat is so damn ridiculous.
2002-01-04 11:03:15 AM
i guess this guy who spends all his time surfing the net doesn't have anything else to do. how many people remember a farking license plate more than 10 minutes after they see it much less going over DMV lists. does that give me the liberty to toss out personal names that offend me or nationalities on the license plates.....what a goob.
2002-01-04 11:04:57 AM
They should just ban the team. They are an embarrassment to Redskins, Washington and football.
2002-01-04 11:06:37 AM
I could say something really offensive here.
2002-01-04 11:12:01 AM
fb....why hold back
2002-01-04 11:14:00 AM
Goose clogged up the middle like nobody's business. Guys like that make a big difference, forcing the run outside. He will be missed.

Betcha he ballons up to 400+ pounds by May
2002-01-04 11:16:56 AM
hey assholes, this isn't the football link.
2002-01-04 11:18:49 AM
LOL Albo too true!! I think if Goose went up against a silverback gorilla, that gorilla would be toast!!:)
2002-01-04 11:21:24 AM
Atkeson was fingered by a Native American activist who routinely surfs the DMV's Web site

I don't really need to know how these 2 spend their private time.
2002-01-04 11:21:50 AM
No, it truly wasn't sarcasm. Maybe I'm just hangin out with the right people, but I don't hear much PC bullshiat anymore--especially since September.
[enter disparaging remark about Indians here]
2002-01-04 11:26:23 AM
who came up with all this pc bullshiat anyways?
2002-01-04 11:26:56 AM
Dear God or Alah or Budha or whomever,

Please release the big earthquake that knocks California into the Pacific Ocean. They have passed on beyond the realm of sanity.

Your Humble Servant
2002-01-04 11:28:39 AM

I hate PC-ness run amok. I've got the florida plate "IH8 PPL" (you figure it out)...just to let everyone I cut off know how I feel about their inadequate driving ability. If that's not offensive then I don't know what is.

Crap like this shouldn't even come up for debate...poor old timer =(
2002-01-04 11:39:00 AM
Atkeson has now requested new plates that say "EUGENEHERRODISABIGFLAMINGCOCKGOBLIN 7".
2002-01-04 11:41:29 AM
QuiK_42o, what do you consider PC-ness run amok? Im assuming you consider "PC-ness" to a certain extent is a good thing, but at what point should it be considered "run amok?"

personally im a skins fan and would like to see the name changed. i think a name like "Warriors" and removing the indian from the helmet should be enough.
2002-01-04 11:41:45 AM
I didn't think there were very many Indians around anymore to insult.

You'd think that Indians should be pissed at the source. (i.e naming sporting teams after racist remarks) not farking license plates that capture them....
2002-01-04 11:46:29 AM
I wish they'd change the redskins name, but until that happens, you'd have to assume that the liscence plates would be ok.
2002-01-04 11:48:31 AM
Damn Californians ruining America
2002-01-04 11:49:56 AM
I have no problem with the license plate itself, so long as the team exists. But it's rather ridiculous that we give a national football team a racist name anyway. Think how many people would be up in arms if you could see the New York N*ggers playing at the Garden...
2002-01-04 11:56:32 AM
Back not so long ago, there was a bounty on the heads of the NDN people. The trappers would bring in NDN scalps along with the other skins that they had managed to trap or shoot. These scalps brought varying prices as did the skins of the animals. The trappers would tell the trading post owner or whoever it was that he was dealing with, that he had 2 bearskins, a couple of beaver skins and a few scalps. Well, the term "scalp" offended the good Christian women of the community and they asked that another term be found to describe these things. So, the trappers and hunters began using the term "redskin". They would tell the owner that they had bearskin, deer skins and "redskins." The term came from the bloody mess that one saw when looking at the scalp, thus the term "red" skin because it was the skin of an "animal" just like the others that they had. So, you see when NDNs see or hear that term they don't see a football team, they don't see a license plate, they don't see any "honoring" of NDNs... They see bloody pieces of scalps that were hacked off of men, women children and even babies. They hear the screams as their relatives were killed in an act of genocide that made Hitler look like a boy scout.

So, yes, you can safely say that the term is considered extremely offensive.
2002-01-04 12:06:08 PM
>Meanwhile, he and his wife are lying low. They have yet to >hear anything about the plates on Wanda's Camry, which >read "RDSKN2."

Well, thank you Peter Y. Hong, Times Staff Writer. I guess they're not lying very farking low anymore, given that, by now, about 87 million people have read this article. Jeebus.
2002-01-04 12:09:39 PM
So, if I had fallen down a well when I was a child and was mentally scarred for life I would have a right to require that no one ever use the term "well" again in any for regardless of meaning?
2002-01-04 12:17:24 PM
SLACKER: So, if I had fallen down a well when I was a child and was mentally scarred for life I would have a right to require that no one ever use the term "well" again in any for regardless of meaning?

Invalid premise. The term redskin is an international symbol of racial genocide.
2002-01-04 12:19:12 PM
I think the offensive bit is that he's willing to broadcast having played for such a suck-ass team.

Think how many people would be up in arms if you could see the New York N*ggers playing at the Garden...

I'd love to go see the Alabama Crackers play. I hear they're pretty good....

Anyway, a friend of mine bought her car from Koonz. Here I am living in a predominantly black area and I hear "When you're talking Ford you're talking coons!" (It wasn't 'til later I realised it was actually "Koonz". Needless to say I remain surprised that it's still around. But, that's just ol' naughty me.
2002-01-04 12:21:26 PM
Slacker: You have a right to biatch and moan, which is the same thing that everyone else is doing. The major difference between you and native americans is that you have no economic or political clout, whereas native americans have some. I mean, remember that bit where PETA tried to get the Green Bay Packers to change their name? Everyone laughed at them, largely because cows don't vote or go to football games. Native americans do both and are well-organised, so politicians and businesses need to pay some attention to their demands.
2002-01-04 12:25:17 PM
Gulliver, I disagree, if something like that had happened to me it might really bother me a lot, there might be hundreds of thousands of other people with the same feeling, but it doesn't give them a right to control what other people say and think. As Big Gay Al put it the other night on south park, passing a law requiring people to behave a certain way isn't the same as having them do it on their own.
2002-01-04 12:27:48 PM
Damn... Seal Hunter beat me to it. Laying low by saying they are in a newspaper? That tells me one thing. That the write of the story thinks that NOONE read their newspaper. If there was a "farking-idiot-of-the-week" award, mine would go to him. Someone please post the story of the follow-up of the DMV sending his wife a litter demanding her plates too, and the subsequent arse-kicking the writer suffers from the husband.
2002-01-04 12:33:04 PM
Somebody needs to be shot for this.
2002-01-04 12:34:20 PM
I feel sorry for the old man.
I didn't know Tee-Pees had electrical power to run appliances. Do they have indoor plumbing too?
How much wampum does it cost to buy one of these new fangled Tee-Pees with sex crazed squaw included?
2002-01-04 12:34:28 PM
Slacker, in general laws of this type are passed banning the use of such terms by government bodies. And since the license plate "belongs" to and is issued by the government, they can make whatever rules they want.

If you like you write redskin, n*gger, or spic with a huge sharpie all over your car. the government cant do shiat about that.

it doesnt matter how many ppl are affected by these killer wells. again your argument is flawed in that these wells aren't a conscience body looking to harm you (physically or mentally).
2002-01-04 12:40:31 PM
Not saying you're wrong, but your explanation of the term "redskin" reads a helluva lot like an urban legend. Any good sources you can point to for it being that rather than, say, that the color of their skin was seen as having a reddish cast? Also, what does "NDN" stand for? Haven't run across that one yet.

Assuming "redskin" was nothing more than a typical racial slur of the sort found everywhere and anywhere, then my question would be: Does anyone actually use it to refer to indiginous north americans anymore? The only thing that ever springs to my mind when I hear the word "Redskins" is "Washinton's football team", and that's invariably the context it was used in. This is relevant because I don't see the parallel to the hypothetical "New York attractive and successful African-Americans", which is a term that is still commonly used as a racial slur.
Notre Dame is the "Fighting Irish". That's a racial slur. Of course, it differers from "Redskins" in that it was applied to the team from the outside as a racial slur because of the large number of Irish on the team at the time. In any case, it's not used as a slur anymore, and no one thinks twice about it as a team name. (And, goddammit, if someone starts going off about changing it then this Irishman is going to have to beat the crap out of him!)
2002-01-04 12:40:47 PM
OH NO. I'm OFFENDING people. Oh, please, Mr. DMV lady, give me a less offensive license plate! Then we can all skip down to have a tea party with the muffin man and all his fairy friends in a gumdrop house on Lollipop Lane! In case you couldn't tell, I was being sarcastic. (bonus points for placing the reference!)
2002-01-04 12:41:57 PM
When a hateful term toward others does not reflect upon your heritage and upbringing, it will not bother YOU, of course.

But there is the unalterable fact it does insult a whole segment of America.

And finally, if the fact it insults and bothers thousands of others does not give you a reason to discontinue using it, I can not change that, either.
2002-01-04 12:47:11 PM
My point is that anything anyone says is going to offend someone eventually so trying to ban offensive language from the state owned licence plates is futile unless the states stop issuing custom licence plates all together. I personally think that is the way to go unless the states decide to stop restricting what can and can not be on a license plate.
2002-01-04 12:47:34 PM
Jebus. We give these a-holes all of this land and this is how they treat us?

"PAW! Break out the musket, the natives are actin up again!"
2002-01-04 12:50:39 PM
When a hateful term toward others does not reflect upon your heritage and upbringing, it will not bother YOU, of course.
That's a big honkin assumption to make about anyone. In my case, there are plenty of derogotory terms that bother me when they are used, and, interestingly enough, none of them are about Irish, Scots, Welsh, Germans or Swiss (my make-up). They are, however, words that are currently used in English as derogotory terms. Since I've never heard "Redskin" actually used in such a fashion, I have a harder time getting worked up about it.

Somewhere, an indian is crying.
2002-01-04 12:56:25 PM
You are correct, MacGabhain, that there is some dispute as to the origin of the term. Here's some various views for consideration...

From: http://www.freeindiannews.com/article1077.html

A term once used when referring to a scalp which had been cut from the head of a Native American.

In times past, it was common to trade the fur of animals and scalps at trading posts. It is said that delicate and sensitive non-Indian women couldn't bear to hear a "scalp" referred to as a "scalp," so the term "redskin" was adopted in its place.

Thus, a trader would refer to the "animals" he had killed as (for example) deerskins, coonskins, and redskins.

Excerpt from The Washington Post

Bob Levey: In 1998, the attorney for the Washington Redskins said that the term "redskin" is neutral. A fairly amazing position, if you ask me. Would that same attorney call "attractive and successful African-American" or "whitey" a neutral term? Your comment, please.

Suzan Shown Harjo: The attorney also said that same thing in a hearing before the Patent & Trademark Board, where the African American judge asked if there were any Native American organizations that used that term. The answer, of course, is no. The "r" word is comparable to the "n" word. One reason that white folks have a difficult time relating to this issue is that there is no comparable word to deride the whole of the white race -- there are words that condemn on a class basis, but not for the group as a whole.

Symbols shape our reality. The dispute is about a derogatory name used to refer to Native Peoples since the days when the Europeans introduced scalping for profit -- when bounty payers began accepting scalps for the Indian heads and red skins for the whole Indian men, women and children. This awful word is a symbol filled with meaning for us. It is not acceptable to us to be referred to in this way. We hope that one day it will not be acceptable in polite society generally.

Excerpted from Myrtle Beach Sun News

Most people do not realize, he said, that during the 1700s, the French in this country offered a bounty for American Indian scalps.
As scalps were brought in, the system was distorted as scalpers tried to cheat by splitting a scalp and receiving twice the offered reward.
To remedy this, the French demanded the entire head for bounty. This, too, posed problems.
Again, the bounty offer changed, and an acceptable scalp consisted of a section of forehead, with brows intact, so an individual scalp could not be divided. This type of scalp was salted to preserve it for the trip to the trading post. The salting turned the skin red.

what? the casino's aren't enough? they are already beyond federal law if they live on a reservation.

people who pray to dogs should not interfere with American Law.
2002-01-04 01:26:11 PM
jeez, the redskins just can't win with anything, can they?
2002-01-04 01:27:52 PM
maybe the sooner, cornhusker, jayhawk, hoosier, rebel, illini, blackhawk, yankees, and various other team mascot fans should outlaw those names to for fear of offending someone.....give me a break. i've been called all kinds of names growing up in different regions of this country. get some thick skin and get over it. if that is all you have to complain about, then hell, you must have it made.
2002-01-04 01:33:50 PM
Seems like some poeple look very hard and long to find something to be offended by. I guess if someone goes by the nickname "Red", that will have to go too. As Freud said... ..."Sometimes a cigar is just a cigar" Don't look to deep into things, not everything is intended as an insult, don't make it out that way.
2002-01-04 01:40:43 PM
Interesting. I'll have to look into that more sometime.
I was interested in there characterization of the word "Shamanism" as being used as a catch-all for occult practices. I've often seen the term used to describe nature-based religions, particularly where there is an emphasis on physical and spiritual healing arts.
The only context I've heard it used to describe occult practices are in closed-off right wing "Christian" contexts, where pretty much anything other than reading and talking about the Bible is seen as occult.
2002-01-04 01:59:04 PM
The most disturbing thing about this is that ONE person raised a farking stink and now the guy has to change his plate! What happened to the good old days when if one person whined about something he was told to grow the fark up and get over it?

If I were Mr. Atkeson, I'd keep the farking plate and put it in my rear window.
2002-01-04 02:00:07 PM
Scratch that. I'd move to a rational state.
2002-01-04 02:14:56 PM
farking stupid PC bullshiat.

When will people realize that it's you who empower the words, the human language is a myriad of words with varying definitions, I think it's fairly obvious that this plate wasn't meant to offend. that it does offend someone is more due to the fact that they have their heads stuffed a bit too far up their cheeks, thus giving them a unique view of the world.

"who routinely surfs the DMV's Web site to check for offensive plates"

In other words, actively looking for shiat to that pisses him off. Chances are, if you look for something that offends you, you will find it.

I personally think all of the wops, rednecks, poles, micks, limeys, hillbillies, degos, wetbacks, wonder breads, chinks, gooks, gimps, faggots, towelheads, ricers, polacks, pepis, wasps, okies, peckerwoods, white trash, heebs, beans, snowbacks, krauts, kikes, blondes, fatsos, moolies, dikes, white devils, flips, greasers, sticks, taters, spearchuckers, dagos, spics, bubbas, canucks, floppy heads, attractive and successful Caucasian-Americans, crackers, frenchies, hicks, itis, japs, puffs, honkeys, jews, attractive and successful African-Americans, injuns, alp apes, spooks, nazis, frogs, round eyes, cameljockeys, gooks, junglebunnies, stumps and retards need to chill the fark out? (i think that includes just about everyone, including myself several times over)

2002-01-04 02:18:31 PM
The redskins name comes from when there was a reward for scalped native americans... eventually they would just say "show some red skin" instead of the whole scalp. I think this is rediculus that they dont abandon the name. You don't see sports teams like the "atlanta jew-killers" or "Harlem Whitey must dies"
