Step 1. Designer babies with edited genes only to prevent debilitating diseases and illnesses.
Step 2. Just like people got used to the idea of "test-tube babies" they will get used to gene editing.
Step 3. Confidence and experience with the technology unlocks INT, CHA, and STA enhancements and multipliers.  Nations like China won't hesitate to increase their citizens stats, and everyone will follow if INT can be boosted.
Step 4. Only the lowest class will have unedited children, because it'll seem cruel to birth a child so inferior, and prone to sickness and early death compared to an edited one.
Step 5. Classes turn into races, or race and sub-race.

Wild? So no plans to create genetically modified kids to be the kickass soldiers? Yeah as if I didn't see that on Dark Angel or any other scifi ideas.

"DARPA wants to develop controls for gene editing and derivative technologies to support responsible research and defend against irresponsible actors who might intentionally or accidentally release modified organisms."

Monsanto is displeased. DARPA shall pay for their insolence. Defund them! Defund them all! Small government damnit!

And since religious groups will be so very set against it and not take part in it, religion will become far more liberal or die out.

I'm not seeing any downside here.

Except for Khan of course.

Good God, I'm not sure whether to mark this funny/ smart in this case I wish there was a scary button.  I know you're right but good lord.

Step 6. Put disease resistant gene in altered babies, when that particular disease goes rampant, it mutates eventually effecting all test tube adults.  The only bit of humanity left are those with unaltered genes because they had enough bio-diversity to with stand the disease.

U.S. government is developing technology that can rewrite genes in the wild.

To make an alteration in the envolvement of an organic life system is fatal. A coding sequence cannot be revised once it's been established.

I think it can be vectored into adult cells with a tailored virus. I heard a great podcast about it, I think Radiolab.

Let me guess, code name Captain Tripps?

/Humans are very complex. So instead of a set of switches you can use to say "boost INT", think of it as a giant factory with thousands of dials that each have a tiny effect on what we clumsily classify as INT.
//Viruses, however, are dead simple. Often the difference between "deadly but hard to spread" and "deadly and super infectious" is a hand full of genes.

By the second day of incubation, any cells that have undergone reversion mutations give rise to revertant colonies like rats leaving a sinking ship; then the ship sinks. We've tried EMS recombination.  Ethyl methane sulfonate is an alkylating agent and a potent mutagen. It created a virus so lethal the subject was dead before he left the table. True, a repressor protein wouldn't obstruct replication, but it does give rise to an error in replication so that the newly formed DNA strand carries a mutation and you've got a virus again. But this - all of this is academic.

Using viruses as a delivery vector, mostly. You can gene edit adults, but the effectiveness isn't that high. Or particularly permanent.
