/my grandfather sailed on wooden sailing ships as a young man. He had a lot of great stories to tell of his time at sea, including the sinking of his fathers fleet of sailing ships by the Russians to block Moscow Harbor at the start of the Russian Revolution.

Back in the day, a tank of gas cost my grandparents upwards of $50.

Then they'd fill their tractor with it for a month or two.  And the car, when they didn't feel like getting someone else to pump it for them.  And their children's cars when they'd come to visit...

We carried our bits in a bucket
And our mainframe weighed 900 tons
We programmed in ones and in zeros
And sometimes we ran out of ones!

Back when "FORTRAN" was not even "ONETRAN"
And the abacus--only a toy!
And we did our computing by torchlight
When I was a boy.

Behold, the device that truly popularized the "mix tape" ... a portable cassette player - you know, for playing cassette tapes?  ::something something kids today grumble::  still works, too.

I lived on an island off the New England Cost by myself for a while. I would motor out to the island at night, after running around the bars and parties on shore like an idiot, guided by moonlight and starlight only, It was an incredibly stupid thing to do. The rule of thumb was that if one could not sight the island before losing sight of shore, you were supposed to turn back. It did not always work out that way and I found myself boned, drifting in fog, more than once.

Want to watch a short film? Drag out the projector, load the reels.  To repeat, rewind the film first.

Back in the day we didn't need any gobbledygook app for Uber, we rode the trolley, such as this one in Media, Pennsylvania.

Back in the day, if you wanted to put a picture on the wall, it was invariably an opaque projector.  Shine a really bright light on a surface, and run the reflection through a prism and a focusing lens.  We used them in the 80's to project sketches onto the wall (in our case butcher paper) for mural work.  This particular one is 1950's Army Signal Core surplus and IDGAF if digital projectors might be better.

White Bird, ID hill. My grandfather did this hill on horseback in 1911 before even the first road existed. I took a car down the 7% grade of the new road and took the old road (in the picture) up from the town of White Bird at 1,800 feet to the summit at 4,400 feet. The switchbacks make the drive twice as long on the old road as the new and completed something like 13 full circles.
