I'd be pissed. That is, unless some of those X10 girls lose some laundry--they're hot!
2001-12-27 3:11:02 PM
if this poll is going to affect fark policy, i hope everyone would choose D
2001-12-27 3:11:19 PM
I hate to say it, cuz y'all probably need the cash, but I'm even avoiding because of their X10 camera ads. I hate them, hate them, hate them.
2001-12-27 3:11:42 PM
cool boobies filter!

as long as the X10 ads show pictures of female prison riots
2001-12-27 3:13:02 PM
Jesus people grow up! I wouldn't like it but I would keep on reading fark. I'd just set my popup killer to destroy them as soon as they reared their ugly heads. I read the breakdown about how much Drew is losing by not doing any popups, and I don't want to deny him that.

Popups are such the non-issue anymore.
2001-12-27 3:13:12 PM
Pop Ups are like Communism. As soon as you let some in, the whole place goes to shiat eventually.
2001-12-27 3:13:14 PM
2001-12-27 3:13:21 PM
Pop up ads don't work. Plain and simple.
2001-12-27 3:13:35 PM
I hope a lot choose D, then fark implements pop ups. Lose a lot of trolls and space fillers
2001-12-27 3:13:36 PM
Well, they're annoying as hell, but if it helps out fark, I know where the farking "X" button is. I sure as hell hate to see it come to this, there's got to be another way to generate cash.
2001-12-27 3:13:38 PM
I say go ahead with them. I don't like them, but hey, it's money, so why not?
2001-12-27 3:14:07 PM
If everyone gave a little here, this would not be an issue.
2001-12-27 3:14:32 PM
Pop-ups make my pop-up get limp.
2001-12-27 3:14:54 PM
The Beer Fund is what I meant.
2001-12-27 3:15:32 PM
do not do it
2001-12-27 3:15:45 PM
Jesus people, don't you know how to stop x10 ads? Just go into your browsers 'security' prefs and go into 'restricted sites' and add all the x10 websites. Duh.
2001-12-27 3:15:55 PM
< Prefers Pop-Unders that hide in the back of your browser window >
2001-12-27 3:16:35 PM
I use Pop Up Killer anyway, so go ahead, make my day.
2001-12-27 3:18:17 PM
I'm going to start complaining now.

2001-12-27 3:18:44 PM
People, it ain't that hard - get Proxomitron or some other ad-killer if you can't stand the ads. I don't think killing the pop-ups has any effect on the website's revenue: the ad is still considered "served" even if you filter it out.

Heck, I configured Proxomitron to allow all my Fark stories to open in the current browser window. It's awesome.
2001-12-27 3:18:46 PM
What would you do if used pop-up ads.

Where's the "Buy an assault rifle and plain ticket to Frankfort, KY" option...?
2001-12-27 3:18:52 PM
I dont see what the big deal is. I have pop-up stopper. It's not that big of a deal to download at all!
2001-12-27 3:20:28 PM
Use Opera. Disabling popups is as easy as setting one application preference. Fark can add all the popups they want for all I care.
2001-12-27 3:20:34 PM
Do what is best to keep FARK up and running.
And to the FARKers who object(I'm not happy about it but Drew has to pay the bills you know)here is a line from a Rolling Stones song.
"You can't always get what you want, but if you try sometimes you get what you need."
I need my FARK fix every day. I'll deal with the B.S. to support my addiction.
2001-12-27 3:20:35 PM
Answer 5:
I'd add the popup sites to my hosts file. I'd never see them and Fark wouldn't get any credit for them.
2001-12-27 3:22:02 PM
Get pop-up stopper or equivalent. End of controversy.
2001-12-27 3:22:04 PM
The ad wouldn't get served if:
A) one has JavaScript turned off which kills,
B) The ad hostname is in my hosts file as,
C) I'm running a proxy which cancels requests based on patterns or hostnames.

I do all three. The reason the ad doesn't get "served" is the request is intercepted before it gets to the server, or not even made.
2001-12-27 3:23:00 PM
Add a question,

"Have you donated to the beer fund?"
2001-12-27 3:23:23 PM
Jraxis - As opposed to a fancy ticket? Schmuck! :)

Seriously, I don't fark a lot anymore *grumbles about trolls*, but a few pops ups wouldn't kill everyone, and it just might, maybe, possibly, help Drew out. Drew, I say go for it, and if the trolls are too stupid to hit the X or download pop up stopper, then tough farking noogies to them. Fark will probably be better without them, AND it will save on your bandwidth costs.
2001-12-27 3:23:53 PM
The ironic thing here is nobody is seeing the point. Pop-up advertisers want you to see their ads. If everyone blocks them, the pop-up advertisers will ultimately stop paying.

Anyway, I'd recommend trying to fix the farking banner ads first. Not a single one of them actually clicks through to its proper destination.
2001-12-27 3:23:56 PM
pop up ads? Are they the ones that feature neeekid women?
2001-12-27 3:24:44 PM
It really depends on what kind of pop-ups advertisers you sell space to. I've found some pretty alright sites and deals by using them. But as my vote reflects, my pop up stopper would probably be activated. I'd say use java banners. If you reorganize the page, it wouldn't cause any pain.
2001-12-27 3:25:17 PM
Drew, do what you need to do -- I'll just close the damn window.. Not like every other site doesnt have the farking x-10 link.
2001-12-27 3:25:46 PM

Those of us at work would appreciate it.
2001-12-27 3:26:03 PM
AAARRRRGGGHHHH! First have me eliminate the use of a pop-up killer by having all stories open in a pop-up window, and then cram pop-up ads down my throat now that I am unprotected?
2001-12-27 3:27:53 PM
Fark is really starting to get weak anyway, it always happens, a site gets a bunch of users and then they get money hungry, I still say, get a real job, if you can't afford to run a website then don't do it.

you are the weakest link, fark!
2001-12-27 3:28:26 PM
Brad , turn pop-up stopper back on, then just hold down the ctrl button when you want to follow a link on fark.
2001-12-27 3:30:03 PM
Works like a charm. Bring on the pop-ups if that's what is required to keep fark going.
2001-12-27 3:30:11 PM
I chose D for good measure, but I use and suggest Web Washer.

I haven't seen a pop-up in a week, and I've seen very few banners, side-banners, sky scraper ads, or any other annoying a$$ ad.
2001-12-27 3:32:09 PM
Don't do it. It's a shiat trend, not to be followed by anyone sane. The ability to find what you want with a minimum of noise is what sets the net apart from the shrieking idiot box.

You're better off just asking for donations, ala NPR. Even banners are more acceptable.
2001-12-27 3:32:42 PM
If a site uses pop-ups, they don't get my money, period, either through the pop-ups or other means. Not only will I not buy whatever is in the pop-up ad (if I accidentally saw it, sometimes I turn JS back on and forget to turn it off), but I will not even consider doing business with the site in question; donations, other products, whatever. Period.

But I will continue using the site if possible. :P And sites that try to block people from using their so-called "free" content without getting barraged by annoyances (e.g., Yahoo's discussion boards,,, *, and more) get added to the growing list of sites I tell people to avoid.

I truly don't understand the motivation of pop-ups and other interstitial ads (e.g., those damn "Chotskies" or whatever they were called). Thinking one can make money by intentionally annoying their customers is perversely illogical, absurd, at best. Oh, "product impressons"? Next time I see your bloody product I remember how you pissed me off in the past and obviously won't buy it now.
2001-12-27 3:33:39 PM
Pop-ups, eh? So you want to know about the pop-ups?, sir. I don't like it. I don't like it at all!
2001-12-27 3:37:04 PM
I guess I could live with say, 1 popup ad. Just don't use ads which open ads, and so on. That gets old really fast.
2001-12-27 3:37:22 PM

Pop-up ads are controlled via JavaScript ( method), the pop-up links are controlled by TARGET attributes in the HTML anchor tag. Don't worry, disabling automatic/involuntary pop-ups shouldn't hinder windows popping-up when you click the links.

Just turn off JavaScript (will limit your use of certain other sites) or run a proxy like Junkbuster to intercept requests to known adservers (read the docs where to get files of known ad servers, and you can make your own). With a filtering proxy, the popup will still pop up but when the browser tries to fetch the URL it will fail (this is when the proxy says "no" to the request) and you'll get an empty popup window.

Or get one of the other Windows programs I see people mentioning in the comments.
2001-12-27 3:37:37 PM
Maybe we could have a setting where each person gets... say 2 pop-ups per day, but beyond that no pop-ups?
2001-12-27 3:38:27 PM
I'd keep farking and leave my Popup Stopper enabled at all times!
2001-12-27 3:39:28 PM
fark pop ups
2001-12-27 3:40:44 PM
It seems like Fark is doing the best it can to provide us with entertainment with the fewest possible annoyances - I don't run a site like this, but even I know that bandwidth and the time/people to run a great place like this aren't free; perhaps you could do better.

If popup ads are necessary, I guess it would be okay, since I enjoy Fark.

Did anyone notice that someone paid $10 for a classified & put up a funny pic? If you don't feel like you're getting enough for your money by contributing to the beer fund, perhaps that would work for you?
2001-12-27 3:41:46 PM
I like that one, if there's a way to make it happen.
2001-12-27 3:42:52 PM
i'm liking br0d's idea. FARK pledge drives!!
