Can't they just fire them?

And by fire them, I mean send in a brigade of flamethrowers to burn em up?

I prefer to simply call them "traitors". It seems these people prefer to turn this country into a third world banana republic.

Y'all Queda is pretty good, but it's Oregon, not really "y'all" country.  Vanilla ISIS is a better fit.

They're operating from their secure Persecution Complex, deep in rural Oregon.

That is how it has gone for them in the past, and that is probably how they are expecting it to go this time, but since they took over a building, and are currently surrounded by the police, the only way they leave now is in either hand cuffs or body bags.

neongoats: Can't they just fire them?

And by fire them, I mean send in a brigade of flamethrowers to burn em up?

On a serious note, probably not.  First, it's a nature preserve, and flamethrowers are inherently more destructive of the environment than regular old bullets.

Second, the best thing to do is just simply wait them out.  Cut off the electricity, encircle the area and don't let anyone in, and wait for them to run out of food.  They'll come out on their own eventually.   Wait until they're starving, then arrest them when they try to sneak away or when they give up.

Going in with guns blazing is counter-productive in cases like this.  These aren't actual for-real, "we want to kill people" terrorists.  If they were, people would already be dead.  They are people who are probably best described as "*VERY* misguided people with guns".  But if you go in and make it a bloodbath, like happened with the Branch Davidians in Waco, you may well supply motivation to some actual, for-real terrorist.  Nobody wins in that case.

Best to handle it like the Montana Freemen:  https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Montana_Freemen#Standoff

Isolate them, cut them off from outside assistance, and just wait them out.  Will it be expensive?  Sure.  But not as expensive as the 168 lives lost in the Murrah Building bombing by terrorist Timothy McVeigh, who was motivated by government actions at Ruby Ridge and Waco.

How about "Occupy Oregon" since that worked so well for the "Occupy Wall Street" guys.

Or maybe "Defend Oregon" like the "Defend Wisconsin" protesters who took  over the Capitol there.

Let the record reflect that I'm comfortable with either solution.

Then, after we're done arresting/killing Bundy Jr. in Oregon, let's send some Feds over to Nevada to scoop up that racist old sh*t-heel Cliven, and show the world how America deals with armed insurrection. It doesn't have to be a bloodbath, but it absolutely cannot be these a-holes getting away with this again.

winedrinkingman: Since the majority of Cliven Bundy's group, including himself and his sons, are Mormons, how about we call them Mormonist.

We also need to play up the Mormon angle, because the majority of Cliven's support comes from his fellow Mormon Ranchers and farmers.  You start calling them out as religious extremist and the LDS church in Salt Lake will be forced to put pressure on his supporters to back away from Cliven, for PR reasons.  The Mormon Church's PR department, not their prophet, is the source of all revelation in their religion.  That will leave Cliven alone in a corner, excommunicated and with his sons either dead or in prison.  Will serve as a warning to others.

You *REALLY* don't want the later.  That's likely to inspire other wing-nuts to take the gloves off, and you can't stop that kind of "lone wolf" terrorism.

I think we can all agree that waiting them out and arresting them after they start getting hungry enough to leave is the best outcome.

Yes, the Teahadists were called Y'all Queda.

This is their sister-cousin organization, Yokel Haram.

The family tree of many of these domestic terrorist organizations doesn't fork.

And while you're doing that, let the whole world laugh at them.  Let them be seen for the comic spectacle that they are, not romanticized into the common man fighting for freedom and human rights.

Kind/sorta/not really related... recently I was reading about culty types and came across the Peoples Temple Agricultural Project (Jonestown), an American religious organization under the leadership of Jim Jones, in northwestern Guyana, where over 900 people died in a mass suicide in 1978. Behind 9/11, it is the single largest non accidental loss of American lives.

Are these crazy [suicide] cults a peculiarly american thing?

But a consensus is emerging among Democrats that the "Occupy" movement is worth tapping into, even helping along and joining with in some instancesinstances.

"I support the message to the establishment," House Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., said on ABC's "This Week." "Change has to happen. We cannot continue in a way that does not -- that is not relevant to their lives. People are angry."

When did being afraid of terrorist reprisals become a thing when dealing with a few dozen racist yahoo shiatbags, but not with muslim terrorists or any other kind of terrorist?

I have never seen that argument to handle any other form of terrorist with kid gloves, on the theory it might be best to not upset them. It is a recurring theme here though. Why?

The linch pin is water.  Cut off their water and you'll have them in a few days.  Might take a little effort depending on the water supply, though ("no fuel for their generators to run their pumps" sort of thing).

These are Mormon Extremists, we can not allow all Mormons to be judged by the actions of few radicals with guns.
