Sounds like a good buy (for your collection to bring out for auction in half a century after it flops spectacularly now).

It would have to be selling at zero margin for anyone else to even look at it.

Pepsi likely has a brand following, just like Apple (people purchase Apple because of the brand). So maybe it wont flop?

I'm holding out for a Hello Kitty phone though.

Make this thing purchasable (and my monthly bill payable) with pepsi points and I'm on board.  As much pop as I drink it shouldn't be difficult to gather enough points.

/still using the 2gb flash drive I bought with pepsi points in ~2008.

FTA:Using a branded app's leverage to ensure the presence of marketing content to eager consumers is a model that's currently under threat, and creating the entire device seems a reasonable marketing response...The pressure to retain hermetic consumer environments does therefore seem to be encouraging gaining complete control over them.

OTOH even the prospect of a basically-free camera doesn't wash away the stink of participating in the culture of omnipresent branding and advertisement and the literal takeover of people's lives by corporations...

What did Pepsi need with an app, anyway?

Diet Pepsi went to "do-gooder only" redemptions years ago.

I switched to Diet Coke b/c the points let me get totally free (even shipping!) presents for my favorite aunt, who has collected Coke memorabilia all her life.

Maybe it's different now, but they went to an all-donation thing w/ their points where you could do like a gofundme (but w/ points from bottle cap codes) for people's projects (schools, teams, charities, etc.). And it was a real hassle, too, as I recall.

I can drink either, so I just went to Diet Coke and never looked back.

Hell, if I'm entering those farking codes off the dang bottle caps, I wanted something for my investment of money and time.

FTA: whilst at the beginning of September Google began to downgrade web-pages which favour incitements to 'download the app!' over the display of the actual web-page content.

FU Google. How about downgrading your own sites that use your fracking "Answer this survey question to read this article!" interstitials???

As for a Pepsi phone, I'll pass - a Mountain Dew one though, I'd be all over it. :)

One person downloading an app and carelessly giving it free rein to use all their personal data is worth more than a hundred website page loads from random people Pepsi knows nothing about.

Also, it's persistent advertising.  Someone can visit a webpage, close the tab, and never come back.  But once you install an app it's on your phone until you actively uninstall it.  Even if you never open it again, that pepsi logo is still sitting there increasing your brand awareness every time you look at it.
