I thought this was going to be about that crappy $3 topless show in Vegas.

Here's a picture I took of the place a couple of years ago (they were closed, unfortunately):

The staff member wouldn't say why the bar was closing but reports in local media say rising rents had made it impossible to keep going.

Well, if the evil, totallitarian chinese government couldn't do it, but those those greedy, heartless landlords were able to achieve this.

I've never been able to understnd why some landlords are sooo greedy and stupid that they'd jack up the rent and drive a thriving business under just to have the place sit idle for MONTHS generating zero income for them.

But then, I guess that what happens when you go over to the "dark side".

2004-03-23 07:34:28 AM
Phew. Not the offy.
2004-03-23 07:36:12 AM
What may well have happened is that they could get another renter to pay more money. The push behind the cleaning up of the Times Square area in the 1990s, for instance, was more economic than moral--Guliani knew that if it was cleaned up, the tourist dollars would dwarf what the real estate could get as a dirty movie Mecca.

"Hello China....I have something you may be interested in, but it's gonna cost ya......that's right....ALL the tea!"

I was in Hong Kong in '72, and topless bars were already widespread. I spent all my time in Wanchai-I never even heard about this place at the time.I don't know if there are any rickshaw drivers around anymore (probably not), but they would all take you to whatever you were looking for back then.I still daydream about my days there.
2004-03-23 07:44:22 AM
The article says they're moving to Wan Chai. I'd expect rents to be a lot higher in Wan Chai, although they'd probably get a lot more business.
2004-03-23 07:46:09 AM
i lived and grew up in hk, spent my first 18 years there.. and heading back tomorrow night frm london.. two things ill say, there are no more rickshaws, and hk is still the world's greatest bastion of capitalism (china cant change our political system until 2047, contrary to popular belief - and wouldnt be in their best interests to do so!).. shame i was never old enough to frequent the strip clubs

Christians think that the human body, the very image of God, is indecent. By logic, they think that God is indecent. Freaks.

Now we have this crap happening in Hong Kong? At least America can't be singled out as the only prudes.
2004-03-23 08:05:18 AM
Asscroft would be proud.
2004-03-23 08:05:39 AM

Eh? Did you read the article? Have you been to Hong Kong? The Bottoms Up club isn't so much closing down as relocating, and Hong Kong is certainly not prudish.
2004-03-23 08:29:14 AM
Hey Snooj-I was only 19 at the time, but I went to every dive imaginable, and certainly no one asked for my ID-I looked about 16 at the time. After going on a spree for the first few days, I hooked up with a girl from "Club Mini" in Wanchai, and stayed with her until she had extracted my last dollar. I returned to the US with NO money in my wallet. Good times.....

All I know about Wan Chai I learned from playing Deus Ex
2004-03-23 08:56:22 AM
Was there in 1991 when we stopped in Hong Kong coming back From West-pac. There were better strip clubs in HK but it was cool to be someplace that they had filmed a James Bond movie.
2004-03-23 09:14:59 AM
I was there in 1995..

Funny thing is, like in New Orleans, You walk through the door and your committed to Buy 2 over-priced drinks.
Lap dance my Eye....
2004-03-23 09:16:57 AM
Under where?
2004-03-23 09:17:30 AM
Bottoms up going tits up?
2004-03-23 09:23:38 AM
Celebrities like George Peppard? Cool.
2004-03-23 09:47:21 AM
I went in the early 90s. If you want titty bars, Hong Kong ain't the place, unless you have an aversion to keeping your money.

The topless bartenders were un-sexy as far as I could see, perhaps the ones they had hired in 71 had never quit.

Still, I went as part of my "see everything James Bond saw" world tour. Didn't make it to the ship in the harbor with M's office in it.

" In 1994 it lost a court battle to prevent the government removing its saucy naked-buttocks neon sign as part of an obscenity crackdown. The ruling also forced the naked dancers to cover up with bras or negliges."

I see why rising rents are an issue.....

Take a look at the caption below the photograph that was included with the article:

yahoo photograph and caption

" A dancer performs on the stage of a strip club in Tampa, Florida. Bottoms Up, Hong Kong's most storied strip club which featured in a James Bond film and was the subject of an indecency crackdown, is to close.(AFP/File/Rick Reuion)"

The photograph has NOTHING to do with the story.

In other words, "This reporter doesn't rate a trip to Hong Kong to take a picture of a stripper from the club I'm writing the story about, so, instead, I got my brother-in-law in Tampa to take a picture of the skankiest woman in the United States of America, at some club there."
2004-03-23 11:09:55 AM
That's hilarious... Actually, I think that dancer looks like David Bowie, circa 1970.
2004-03-23 11:19:02 AM
If you're ever in Richmond, VA go to Bottom's Up in Shockoe Bottom.

The pizza there is unbelievable

/not a strip club, sorry
2004-03-23 11:19:51 AM
jeep44, strip clubs tend to be an old businessman or tourist kinda scene.. i stuck to regular clubs/bars, but its true - ID-ing is lax most places, esp if you look loaded.. better places, the IDing gets way stricter, though of course its 18 not 21.. either way hk rocks, best nightlife ever
2004-03-23 11:34:39 AM
just adding another voice to the "WTF is up with the skanky white chick in the photo?" column.

/yellow fever.
2004-03-23 11:53:54 AM
I wonder how much a stripper gets in unemployment. I heard the max unemployment benefit was something like $300 per week.

/maybe they can send a wad of sweaty $1 bills...

I have been to Bottoms Up in HK a couple times. It is on the Kowloon side of HK. It is a place to take tourists. It is not a strip club. Just round bars with a (sometimes) topless chick in the center serving drinks. Not cheap drinks, and they had a service charge too. Strictly for the tourist. Heck, I had to tell a chick to take off her top or we were leaving, after all we went their for beer and boobies.

As far as pub crawling, there are tons of pubs in Kowloon better than BU. I haven't been back since HK was given back to China. I doubt it is as much fun, especially where you have absolutely no rights as a human being.
2004-03-23 01:11:05 PM
I've been there. I had a good time.

Though for _real_ entertainment, I found that the Diamond Club (around the corner from the old China Fleet Club) in Wan Chai was much better. I heard it's gone now, torn down for some BS urban renewal thing.

Mary, sweet Mary. I wonder what she's doing now.
2004-03-23 01:37:24 PM

HK hasn't changed much since it went back to China. The government leaves it alone as basically their little cash cow. The mainlanders have a hard time getting access to it, just like before. The main difference from prior to Chinese rule is that the real estate prices have collapsed and everyone has negative equity in their buildings. Don't know how long that will last, though.

I agree with Angel, Wan Chai is much better.

I thought that pic was David Lee Roth.

Americans have exported the inherent dichotomy of our culture. Puritannical and prurient.

New Orleans is VERY religious. And VERY obscene.
2004-03-23 03:06:29 PM

doesn't that defy the laws of physics?
2004-03-23 03:49:50 PM
Ah yes, Wan Chai. How is the bar fine market? Prices up/down/same?

There are a lot of former Hong Kong residents in Canada.
