It's too bad our Women's Soccer Team just "isn't that good".

They were playing with an attitude.  The Germans were afraid toward the end.  Talk about thunder and lightning.

Here's hoping Japan makes it through so we can re-enact WWII.

Now that you've beaten Germany, the next step is to take on Japan using overwhelming offense. Then you can expect to battle Korea to a draw in the Olympics, lose to Vietnam at the Pan-Pacific Championship, pull out an overhyped victory against Grenada at the Pan Am Games, followed by a stunning defeat against Iraq in the World Championship.

If 2-0 in soccer is the equivalent of the central europe campaign, would 3-0 be Hiroshima/Nagasaki?

That might make 4-0 the holocaust itself, but we can't know for sure because no team's ever scored four times in one soccer game.

US looked like a different team.  Really attacking well, and yet prepared for German counters.

/sadly, I only got to see the first half.

This would be more clever if not for the 10-0 and 10-1 matches in this very tournament.

It goes along the same lines as humor about British cuisine and dentistry.  The fact that a full English breakfast is delicious, or the Kate Middleton's teeth are perfect doesn't make it any less funny.

$.02 a LOT of it, was simply due to finally realizing what skills our players have and putting them in a hybrid formation that moved between 1-1-4-4 to a 4(or 2-2)-2-4  as play evolved and dictated.

Now she still had a few of the WRONG (or, rather, least optimal) players in for that strategy, but at least it was an improvement. pressure high, build from the wing, shoot from the dead center of the box/pitch. and do it without playing lob-n-pray crosses to Wambach.

I think the headlinr was in jest, but our women solidly controlled this game. Germany's high-powered offense had one shot on goal and we had several missed opportunities.

I'm wondering who or what Christen Press pissed off to be completely ignored in this WC? Does she not munch enough carpet or something? The girl is a dynamic player that scores just about every time she touches the ball, and she cant even get in garbage minutes as a sub. WTF, Ellis? Plus, she's cute as hell.

I can't wait for the thinkpieces about how the US team needs to radically change their play style or they are going to get destroyed by the top tier teams.

She had a great first game but after that has had issues losing the ball.  Its like she gets... TOO excited, then gets clumsy.

Sort of like the reverse of Carli Lloyd.  Lloyd is one of the best USA finishers (especially evidenced last night) but her mid-field play in some games has been just short of abysmal.  In the China game the US would have a really good series of passes and then she would inexplicably make a really stupid pass, clumsy move, or simply get dispossessed.

I wanted the same offense we had with China in this game.  I thought not having Rapinoe and Halliday in the match made the entire US team take the energy level up about 6 steps.  Last night was better than their average this tournament, but in the China game it looked like the Chinese weren't even trying have the time compared to us.  Germany put on much higher pressure than China, but the US energy level wasn't nearly as high.  And our passing took  step back from the China game.

I hope we get Japan and beat the royal snot out of them.  I have only seen Japan play in their elimination of Australia, but god damn they were dull.  I want that same suffocating frenetic pace we used to bury China to sink the Japanese.

Well, they sort of did.  Have you watched Germany?  Their passing was rediculous.  Until China I didn't think we could take them.  Our back line might be made of farking Chobham armor but our offense has been total clownshoes for most games consisting of hail-mary crosses from the wings.

Really?  I was quite impressed with the way Japan pretty much dictated the pace of the entire game.  If they had someone on the team who could finish worth a damn, they'd probably be the favorites to win the tournament.

I didnt say  bad, i said dull.  Yes, they controlled the pace but what they did with it wasn't overly impressive.  I feel like if the Aussies hadnt played pretty flat they would have overwhelmed the methodical play with pace.

True.  Though I bet some people thought the same thing about Spain in 2010 when they were stringing together 1-0 victories in the playoff phase of the tournament.

MugzyBrown: The US Women's team has better passing and creativity in their game than the US Men's team.

I take it you haven't been watching the men's team recently. Better passing and creativity than Mexico, Netherlands, and Germany. Klinsi has a better system than the women's system using a pulley 6 and 8, with a lot of play developing from the central defenders with great overlap wingback play. Bascially, Klinsi is turning the US into Germany-lite, with the US Men's national team looking a lot like the 2006 Germany side he coached. Also, I'll say it: Losing Landon Donovan was a big help, in so much there is no longer any focus on our attack--Everybody creatively attacks now.

Don't worry, Gold Cup is coming up right after our women eat a breakfast of Akai Miso and Rice/Eggs bangers and fried toast and wash it down with victory.

Haven't seen a game since the WC. In the WC they couldn't control the ball vs most teams.
