Lopez says there was another person was in the car with Galdino. Neither realized a person had been struck until the victim's body fell from beneath the SUV when they arrived home.

Not on the hood, still you might think they'd hear something dragging under there, not to mention feel the initial impact. Great sentence construction there, too. The writer and editor should be proud.
2004-03-01 11:21:34 AM
Wrong the what with of structure sentence?
2004-03-01 11:24:31 AM
You should see the pics of the vehicle. All up smashed in the area hood. (working on sentence of structure)
2004-03-01 11:44:09 AM
Gebreegziabher. That's a name that reads like an eye chart.

Frankly, I love the ad that accompanies the article:

"DONATE YOUR CAR TO CHARITY! Proceeds benefit the physically disabled"

...with a picture of a guy in a wheelchair next to an SUV.

There was case another like this in Fairfax a three years ago with involved a law clerk who hit and run a korean girl and called 911 only after she arrived in her area home. She jail to went.

But seriously, folks, Peter Jackson is really unkempt.

Maybe the "boom-boom-chickah" music was too loud to hear anything?

Oh look, he at the Brazilian Embassy worked.

"Diplomatic immunity..."

Today's rant against todays tired and repetitive headline is brought to you. Today.
2004-03-01 02:14:50 PM
stapon: blame Drew, he picks 'em. I used to submit non-cliche headlines, but they never get selected.
2004-03-01 02:27:52 PM
Put him in jail for 50 years and make an example out of it
2004-03-01 02:28:39 PM
I had one rule and I follow it, whenever I have to stop on the side of a hiway I get out of the car and stay away from it.
2004-03-01 02:33:21 PM
From the article, it sounds like the guy was changing his tire in the middle of the road, or at least where the guy was very close to the road. If the victim was bent over, doing something with the tire, while crouching very close to the road, it is possible the driver did not know he hit him.
2004-03-01 02:34:15 PM
The driver must have been thinking to himself, "Damn, how many speedbumps can one road have ?"
2004-03-01 02:39:27 PM
Leonard_Cohen, that's a good rule. Somewhat personal anecdote: just a few months ago, a friend had a minor accident on the beltway, and he and the other vehicle involved pulled over into the shoulder. A police officer arrived shortly thereafter, and by that time traffic was already slowing down just because stupid people were rubbernecking. Then, as they were all standing on the shoulder exchanging information and such, my friend's car and the other car involved were struck by a passing car, which narrowly missed hitting the people as well.

Also, another reason it's supposedly not a good idea to stay in your vehicle along a highway at night in an isolated area is because criminals/predatory humans keep an eye out for that sort of opportunity.

Fitsum Gebreegziabher?! and I thought Fennis Dembo would be my favorite name for all eternity..
2004-03-01 02:40:21 PM
...Fitsum Gebreegziabher...

Anyway...well, that name just blew me away. Can't really think of much else.
2004-03-01 02:40:23 PM
Damn ignorant SUV drivers
2004-03-01 02:41:30 PM
This has a 'Law & Order' script written all over it.
2004-03-01 02:41:39 PM
how long till we get an 'i'd hit it' pic for this?
2004-03-01 02:42:12 PM
How do you drag someone from the hood of your vehicle?

2004-03-01 02:42:56 PM
Gebreegziabher. GEBREEGZIABHER.

I give up. How the hell is this name pronounced?
2004-03-01 02:44:23 PM
Emasedawg, good point. Also, most people 'round here are used to horrible potholes...I can actually believe that it's possible the guy didn't realize he had hit someone. Although, I hope that I would notice something like that, you know, visually, because i'd be watching the road.

*withholds the usual anti-SUV comment*
2004-03-01 02:44:24 PM
Fitsum, lose some.
2004-03-01 02:45:36 PM
Ya know, I'm going to hell for this, but I actually think I feel more upset about this since the guy's name was Fitsum Gebreegziabher. There are a hundreds of Bob Jones, and Tom Smiths, but how many Fitsum Gebreegziabhers can there be in the world.

/climbs in handbasket
2004-03-01 02:49:29 PM
well there's one less of them crazylittleelf

Fitsum Gebreegziabher

That name goes on my list of favorite names...right up there with Gwatoh Kromah.

He also says he's shocked that police charged Galdino with DWI.

He really should be relieved that he was charged; no one has an excuse to pull this while bone sober.
2004-03-01 02:52:29 PM
Technically it was brought to you by Brasil, since the dumbass was a dip-lomat.
2004-03-01 02:52:44 PM
Hmm... perhaps St_Francis_P's remark on the writer's style and grasp of grammar had some impact. The article now reads:

"His lawyer Daniel T. Lopez says Galdino had no idea he had struck someone with his SUV until he returned to his home. Another person in the vehicle didn't realize anyone had been struck either."

Is this acceptable to everyone now?

In Las Cruces, NM:

The man told police he didn't know that the woman had become entangled in the truck's seat belt after he pushed her out of his cab following an argument.

Police found 39-year-old Faye Smith on Wednesday dumped along a highway. She had dragged nine miles through city streets, leaving a trail of blood and clothing....in.html
2004-03-01 03:00:47 PM
I had to double check to see where this happened. Because there was a very similar accident in this area, where a guy got hit while broke down on the highway. He was standing in one of the travel lanes though, and he didn't get a ride on the offending vehicle to the drivers house.
2004-03-01 03:03:25 PM
At least they didn't park in the garage and leave him there to go inside and have sex.

Washington Post story (NOW WITH REGISTRATION - username: assman@kramerica com / password: assman)

Pretty gruesome details about a trail of remains.
2004-03-01 03:10:17 PM
An autopsy on Gebreegziabher will be...

The only large peice left is this guy's name. Geesh.
I say lock the guy in his SUV, set it on fire.
2004-03-01 03:19:26 PM
Fitsum Gebreegziabher?

Fitsum, damn near killed'em!

/nuttin' really
2004-03-01 03:24:16 PM
Maybe he didn't know that someone was under his car, but if he would've stopped at the scene of the accident instead of taking off, he would've found out pretty damn quick. Lock him up!
2004-03-01 03:27:51 PM
Gotta love NM, Rob4127

The most amazing thing about that article is the headline: the driver of the vehicle that dragged the woman 9 miles is merely a SUSPECT.
2004-03-01 03:35:36 PM
I am stuck on asphalt...
cause asphlats stuck on me...
2004-03-01 03:46:33 PM
How can he be charged with 'hit-and-run' if he brought the guy with him?
2004-03-01 03:47:51 PM
Hooray for unoriginal headlines! More Ackbar photoshops!
2004-03-01 03:48:31 PM
I submitted this with a straight up this-is-what-happened headline. Can you see my halo from where you're sitting?
2004-03-01 03:54:23 PM
well at least he didn't leave the guy to slowly die stuck in his windshield
2004-03-01 03:54:58 PM
