Yeah, don't watch it then. Whining about the entire premise of Mad Max in a Mad Max thread makes you look really smart.

Pretty sure it's a sequel that's been in development for a decade.

Is this a reboot or a direct sequel to the Mad Max trilogy?

It is a reboot. At the April 30th, 2014 test screening in Burbank, CA. Director George Miller told attendees that the reason for a reboot was that too much time had passed between the last Mad Max film to do a sequel or a film set between, along with doing such would mean a plague of continuity issues. George also commented that he didn't want to do a "remake" as he had no intention on retelling a story already told. A reboot allowed him to bring the universe and wasteland 30 years up to date while keeping Max as the moviegoers remember him, a man with nothing to lose after the loss of his family.

From Warner Bros. press release: "Mad Max: Fury Road Seminal director George Miller returns to the post-apocalyptic universe he created three decades ago with the cultural phenomenon Mad Max. Tom Hardy reinvents Max Rockatansky in Mad Max: Fury Road, Millers extraordinary new take on the legendary character for a new generation of fans. The film also stars Charlize Theron, Nicholas Hoult, Zoe Kravitz, Riley Keough, Hugh Keays-Byrne, and Rosie Huntington-Whiteley."

ALL of you are wrong. Every single one of you.

This remake is worth it but all others are not.  I hope by seeing this remake, they keep making movies like this.  Likewise, I hope that they stop making other remakes.

2014-07-27 11:59:50 PM

GungFu: I'm so confused about whether this film is a sequel or a remake or a reboot, I might just boycott on principle. I like my films to be clearly categorised or you're not getting my money. Making it worse, I don't even know if Tom Hardy was in Prometheus or Bronson.

As Fisker just posted, it's a reboot.

2014-07-28 12:00:36 AM
I don't know.  It's a little too... sexy?  The original was dirty and ugly and kind of plain.  But that made sense for what they were going for.

I'm just not excited about this.  Not yet anyway.  Maybe it's just too early to tell.

2014-07-28 12:02:16 AM
I'm sold.

However.  2015?  2014 is just over half over.  It's like seeing Christmas stuff in stores in July.  I'm slightly sick of prolonged waits and media saturation that lasts months and months trying to build hype, quite often being the meme-ish revealing enough bits in each successive trailer that one need not see the movie at all because they've already seen 80% of it.  A couple months previous is best, 6 at the outside for something monumentally huge.  Gets people excited without being over exposed.

Over exposure is problematic in two ways.
1. People become desensitized and lose interest.  Excitement to see NewMovieX fades over time.  This is why people bit-torrent a movie once it hits DVD/BR.  They've lost interest and totally forgotten by the time it actually rolls around, didn't even realize they missed it in the theater completely, it's actually a bit of a shock when they notice it's on disk.  The opportunity is missed, they sigh, and then turn to the internet depressed that they missed it, again...

2. The dedicated fans get over hyped and get burned because their expectations were at an impossible level(or that the movie was utterly stupid rubbish... Just with a really big budget). Whichever the case is, they see the movie and are totally disgusted with it.  They learn to ignore advertising because it just burns them. This loops back to number one.

Eventually, people just stop giving a crap altogether, especially when you factor in that going to the movies can be a hassle, expensive, and the people can suck balls. Two hours of entertainment isn't worth allt he hassle, real life goes on. It WILL be on netflix, HBO, Starz, or one of them, and in 6 more months, it'll be on network cable like FX..  Burned out and desensitized to the whole movie scene.

2014-07-28 12:13:24 AM
Looks awesome and with just the right farked up tone of the series, like they just picked up where the others left off. No self-important 20XX-remake bullsh*t, if the trailer is at all consistent with the film. I'm in.

2014-07-28 12:15:29 AM
Looks good, but I'm worried about the amount of shooting.

One of the things that made Mad Max feel post-apocalyptic was the way that even the roving bandits were running out of everything. Dozens of people die in Road Warrior over a few barrels of gas, and the bad guy loads a single round at a time into his pistol because they're too valuable to use. Even Max only fires his shotgun twice in the first two movies, mostly just using it to bluff with. Having Tom Hardy blaze away with a glock in the trailer doesn't exactly seem to fit that.

2014-07-28 12:19:50 AM
Looks cool. And while Road Warrior is a great piece of 80s action cinema, I am glad they didn't try to dress up the marauders like they were extras in a Judas Priest video.

Why the f*ck are they wrecking that poor Interceptor again?

Good trailer.  The music was good, the action was enticing and there's enough strange elements mixed in to get me curious about the plot.

They're ambitious and it shows.  Might actually be a good reboot.

2014-07-28 12:43:32 AM
It looks like a combination of bits from all the previous movies.  That could be bad.  If all this movie has going for it is redoing everyone's favorites scenes but in a larger scale that will be boring.

2014-07-28 12:49:24 AM
Hey, girls.
Can you tell me, why does Max keep driving the last V8 interceptor?

Mad Max 2 is one of the purest action movie experiences ever made. Thunderdome fell short for a number of reasons (PG13, cutesy third part in a trilogy-itis, the death of Byron Kennedy) but I'm hopeful for Fury Road. Two hours straight of this would be incredible:

spamdog: Cars are cool, but how's the script? "My name is Max, and my world is fire and blood"? I hope that's not in the actual movie. It's awfully 14 years old. I remember Mad Max spoke softly and didn't reflect on what a badass he was.

Yeah, this.  I suspect this will follow the recent trend of "not your mother's _____" by injecting way over-the-top, CGI fueled action sequences and making the protagonist superhuman beyond all reason.

Oh, and not having an actual story or characters with more than 2 dimensions.  Hey, prove me wrong, studio!

Funny, there's a Mad Max marathon on where I am and I'm currently watching Thunderdome. The movie is such a pile of crap it's no wonder I didn't bother watching it again since it first came out.

Director George Miller addresses a lot of your concerns here. If you don't want to read the whole interview, here's the pertinent part:

I feel like a lot of people are very excited about the idea that you're doing old school stunts, old practical effects. Was that very important to you, going into it?

Yeah, Mad Max is not a superhero. We don't defy the laws of physics, it's not a fantasy film. It's basically a western on wheels. And I think if people see, I know when I see too much CG, that sort of takes me out of the experience. You want to have that sort of almost, I'm not going to say documentary experience, but you want to feel it like you're really immersed, like it's really happening. So we decided to literally do every car that's smashed is smashed, every stunt is a real human being, even the actors do a lot of their own stunts, and so on.

/Been pretty stoked since I saw Charlize's awesome buzzcut.

Let's hope they get it right.
