doglover: Rube Goldberg solution. We already have the tech to do something similar without much of an infrastructure update: self driving cars. It would be orders of magnitude cheaper to just have a bunch of robo-taxis.Might be fun somewhere small and expensive, like Disney Land, but that's about it.
ArcadianRefugee: Yeah, until it explodes just because you didn't pay your fare.
Russ1642: Oct 21 2015 is just over a year away.
way south: It could happen but: Infrastructure costs money. There needs to be a shift in priorities for things like this to happen.
Richard_The_Clown: Who's gonna ride it? They built a light rail in Norfolk and I hardly ever see anyone in the thing! And now they are talking about having one go through Virginia Beach. I'd love to be able to just get on a train and take it all the way to the ocean front, but I know that from where I live it will take twice as long to get there than if I drive. So driving it is.
Hollie Maea: way south: It could happen but: Infrastructure costs money. There needs to be a shift in priorities for things like this to happen. Two shifts, unfortunately, are needed. First, we have to decide that spending on infrastructure at all is a worthy endeavor. We used yo be there, but aren't there any more. Second, we have to decide that some of that spending should go to legitimately new stuff, rather than patching and expanding our 150 year old system.Since the US is the most conservative (and therefore change averse) of the big rich developed countries, we'll probably never to wait for someone else to do it first. Can't be European countries though, since we are instinctively opposed to anything they do.
bdub77: The project would cost 20 billion dollars for a 50 mile run of rail:- 3 billion for acquiring property rights- 2 billion for the maglev track- 2 billion for the pods- 1 billion for transit facilities and HQ- 2 billion for lawyers- 10 billion for political bribes and corruptionIt would take 20 years to complete the initial 5 mile run of tracks.
