Is  subby reporting from a time vortex in the 1980s when New York used to be crime-ridden?

Hey  subby, don't trust that Oliver North guy. He's up to no good.

I like to get nostalgic sometimes and shiat in the street.

Really Subby?  Really?

/not that this would not be in some ways preferable.  It would get rid of the douche tide that call NYC home today.

I love that movie (and other 80s movies about NYC, like The Warriors) because they're such great historical documents about the crime hysteria of the period.

Why not both!

The introduction of the smelly, smoky automobile was heralded as a great boon and clean alternative to horse-drawn conveyances. At that time in NYC, the varnish on carriages was peeling away due to the ammonia fumes from horse urine in the stables.

So, in 1893, the horse manure was literal.  Now, it's merely metaphorical.

Oooh, that's a rare one. Don't get many of those, these days.

The cops camped out front of the NYSE during OWS covered the street with horse shiat.  It was disgusting.

foo monkey: The cops camped out front of the NYSE during OWS covered the street with horse shiat.  It was disgusting.

I bet the horse shiat was pretty awful too.

The thing is the horseshiat was pretty much all over due to traffic. The modern-day detritus is localized.

There were also more house sparrows with the horses, since they ate undigested seed from the plops.

In 1893, 2.5 million pounds of horse manure filled NYC streets per day, a rate equaled today by the Fark Politics tab.

They're more fun than the current spate of jackboot fellating fantasies where instead of Mad Max Somalia we yearn for Orderly North Korea.

In the seventies and eighties, the streets smelled of nothing but urine.  Everything, everywhere had hobo pee on it.

Also the city was letting everyone store their trash on the street.  Every store and restaurant had a little mini dumpster out in front.  You could not get away from the smell of garbage.

Giuliani stopped all that.  He passed a law that mandated that garbage had to be kept indoors in an air conditioned space until pick up.  Every restaurant in the city now air conditions its garbage.

The urine smell only went away after the cops evicted the homeless guys from everywhere.  I felt bad about that, but things couldn't go on the way they were.  Sure the smell was a problem, but it was more that things had just gotten too dangerous.

Horse poop doesn't smell all that bad. It's the horse urine that is wretched.

I have two horses that graze my pastures, and I shovel the poop twice daily. About 40 lbs per horse. All of the waste is dry composted and recycled into garden plots for myself and neighbors. It is awesome fertilizer.
