Could also have something to do with the radial distribution of receptors from the center of the eye.It would be easy to test the sampling frequency hypothesis by making small changes to the frame rate, and seeing if the colors an individual saw changed.

I tried two monitors and got the same result, a forest/olive main color, and after a while the negative space becomes relatively magenta, but primarily a deep green chasing the black lines.I downloaded the GIF to see if it's got any colors, or how to increase the smoothness, this GIF is a very low frame-rate, choppy and epileptic. Searching for a flash version with better FPS, I found thishttp://www.michaelbach.de/ot/col-Benham/index.htmlWith adjustable rotational speed.The colors I see don't change from 100RPM to 300RPM. Below 100 it's clearly black and white, must be my brain's refresh rate.At negative RPM you can get the primary and secondary colors to switch places, This app has a reverse button to do just that.My colors didn't change across two monitors and ranges of speed, and I'm shocked that so many colors are reported, only a small handful agree with me that it's dark green.
