Dennis Hopper gets his revenge!

Bike rage!

I can attest that unless you are in an area where pedestrian traffic is common, drivers firmly act as if they have the right of way over a bike no matter what the circumstance. My biggest near-miss totals are by left-turners in opposing traffic as I am going through an intersection with a green light.

Believe me, I've thought about carrying a gun. There's some angry drivers out there.

I commute on 90% country roads. Half are 2 lane,m the other half are unmarked 1 lane. I see bike and jogger asshats on these roads all the time. In the starights its no big deal - share the road and all that. But on a blind hill or curve, they are making the road very dangerous - for them and me. But that has nothing to do with this article. Sounds like bike boy snapped.

2004-02-09 1:13:55 PM
How did the trucker not just take the biker out with the truck? Sounds like they had a brawl and the biker won.

Bikers in tight shorts: 1
Truckers who probably look like bikers: 0

Let's go for the middle finger trifecta!

2004-02-09 1:16:04 PM
iollow, I coudn't agree more. Strangely, however, I do live in an area with a lot of pedestrian traffic. An d a lot of bike trffic. And it still seems like the motorists have it in for us (or aren't paying attention to anything). I won't carry a gun, but maybe a ball-peen hammer?

Robert Urick.... HAH! Fooled you, he's already dead! Oh wait, there's another one?

"flips shots"

I am not hip to this euphemism. Did he fire a gun or was he drinking alcohol?

2004-02-09 1:16:56 PM
iollow: I totally know what you're saying. Some cars barely miss me when they speed by (and I'll already be as close to the curb/parked cars as I can be).

But to be honest, it's NYC's pedestrians that pose a greater threat to cyclists than the cars. I can't tell you how many times I've had to swerve at the last minute because some dumbass has stepped off the curb to look blankly past me down the street for a cab. Either that, or they are crossing against the light because there aren't any cars coming. Every so often I yell at them, "Just so you know, GETTING HIT BY A BIKE REALLY HURTS!"

2004-02-09 1:17:03 PM
Like I've said before:

Guns rock!

2004-02-09 1:17:52 PM
OK, water bottle... check. Stupid-looking bike helmet... check. Cycling shoes... check. Spandex shorts... check. Loaded handgun... check. "Honey, I'm going for a bike ride."

WTF?

2004-02-09 1:17:52 PM
Truck driver = pickup truck driver

Wouldn't the gun chafe?

2004-02-09 1:18:04 PM
Damned inconsiderate of the bicyclist to not finish off the pickup-truck Yabbo for a clean kill. Just like all damned inconsiderate bicyclists.

2004-02-09 1:18:32 PM
The truck driver should have known better than to mess with Dan Tanna.

Ok, this story is interesting for several reasons:

One, I live within walking distance of Monroeville.
Two, I heard nothing of this on any Pittsburgh news (TV, paper, et. al.)
Three, This is from a Tampa Newspaper!! (I know, I know AP, but still...)

2004-02-09 1:19:23 PM
Didn't any of you read the article? The truck driver told the bicyclist to "get off the road." Hell, I would have flipped him off and shot him TWO times for something like that.

Jeez, some people...

2004-02-09 1:19:55 PM

That's because bicyclists are slow, ruin traffic flow, don't signal their intentions, drive erractically, and are otherwise huge hazards. Yes, it's everybody's road, but if the majority of cyclists would learn how to NOT be little flimsy menaces, there'd probably be a lot less animosity. Not all of 'em are idiots, but sadly too many of them are.

2004-02-09 1:20:01 PM
I flat guarantee, without reading the article, the reason the cyclist shot the bird was the trucker almost ran him off the road.

It would be nice if cops enforced the traffic laws (because this actally saves lives) but they're busy arresting people for victimless crimes.

If more bicyclists were armed it would be more gooder.

2004-02-09 1:20:02 PM
I think both of them are the dumbasses here.

2004-02-09 1:20:29 PM
In case I needed another reason to not regret leaving Pittsburgh... there's another.

2004-02-09 1:21:20 PM
He should be more careful about the flipping "of" angry truck drivers.

2004-02-09 1:21:30 PM
where does 'ramming speed' come in?

2004-02-09 1:22:18 PM
Ah handguns! The cause of, and solution to, all of America's problems.

2004-02-09 1:23:02 PM
ok. im all for bicycles having an equal "right" to be on the road and we should look out for them in the interest of safety...

BUT

just because you have the "right" to do something doesnt make it a brilliant farking idea!!

i have the "right" to go to a southern baptist church wearing a goatskull helmet and covered in chicken blood, but i dont think it would be a great idea!

bicycles need to get the fark out of the way. its better for both of us.

(i ride little kids bikes.)

Bah!! This happened in DC years ago. Some guy shot a woman (and killed her) after she knocked him off his bike. Near College Park I think.

Oh and Belial_two, cyclist are the only idiots on the road. I ride and drive, and I've seen both types I wished I could shoot.

2004-02-09 1:24:40 PM
You haven't been listening to the radio then, buntz. This story is evolving - originally, the driver's only offense was to yell "get off the road!" and all of a sudden the pedalist opened fire.

Now, we've got the "ramming speed" element, and by tonight the driver should be in custody, too.

2004-02-09 1:25:21 PM
He's a bad shot. I mean really. Guy chases me down with a truck, and I'm armed and willing to use it, I'm not going to leave him in good enough shape to continue chasing me. Unless he's like Jack Sparrow, only one shot? It's puzzling. I think there's more here than was reported.

2004-02-09 1:26:54 PM
A more accurate summary of what happened, for those who didn't want to RTFA:

1. Driver tells cyclist to "get off the road."
2. Cyclist flips driver the bird.
3. Driver turns and drives towards cyclist.
4. Cyclist displays gun, shoots driver in arm.
5. Driver rams cyclist. Brief fight. Cyclist flees.

Sounds to me like they're both asshats.

The pedalist was 41yo!!! Carrying a Gun.. That makes me assume he has a DUI and can't legally drive a car.

Lots of those around here. Heck, most of the adults on Mopeds are DUI's, since you dont' need a license to drive one.

(South Carolina here)

2004-02-09 1:28:53 PM
Cyclists are always getting in the way of traffic and generally just messing things up, especially if there is no bike lane. Some of them close down a whole lane, forcing motorists to cram into the left lane and creating a cluster fark. I'm sorry cyclists, but when I'm in my car I want to go faster than 10mph. I'm not going to wait behind you patiently to get where I'm going. Move the fark over. All these tree hugging commie pinko cyclists should go to beijing if they want to fark up the roads.

/End rant
/Flame on

2004-02-09 1:29:24 PM
Bicyclists don't stop at stop signs or lights. Bicyclists don't signal turns. Bicyclists ride on the wrong side of the streets. Bicyclists run pedestrians off the sidewalks and trails. They assert their protection under law, and yet obey none of the laws that apply to them. The only form of life lower is the lawyer.

That said, the driver of the truck must have been pretty thin-skinned to get that offended by a spandex clad weener flipping him off. He really needs to get off the caffeine.

2004-02-09 1:31:02 PM
Buntz, it was all over KDKA TV last night. Not that anyone really watches KDKA but still.

2004-02-09 1:31:27 PM
To all bike riding crybabies, you are not a car. If there is a bike lane, stay in it. If there is no bike lane, stay as far to the edge of the road as safely possible. Do not get in the turn lanes because you don't want to use the crosswalks at intersections, you think you can accellerate as fast as the cars? you can't. Most of the people that nearly run you over are not trying to kill you, they are simply not paying attention, quit whining or buy a car, it's nothing personal.

2004-02-09 1:32:21 PM
Believe me, I've thought about carrying a gun. There's some angry drivers out there

Wait, I'm confused. You're considering carrying a gun, but it's the DRIVERS who are angry?

2004-02-09 1:33:00 PM
syberpud- well said. There are idiots on four wheels and two wheels. I try to be as considerate of cars as I can on my commute (I stay off the four-lane roads with 40+ mph speed limits) but I can't be held responsible for all the assclowns who run lights, ride on the wrong side of the road, etc. Likewise, most motorists are pretty considerate but of course there are the 1%-ers who have to miss me by two inches, yell at me to get off the road, etc in order to prove how large their wangs are or something. I'm sorry, but that's going to warrant at least a bird from me. I'm not bothering you, so how about not putting my life in danger just because my spandex-clad butt is somehow threatening to your way of life, okay?

You left out an important modifier...BAD Bicyclists don't stop at stop signs or lights. BAD Bicyclists don't signal turns. BAD Bicyclists ride on the wrong side of the streets. BAD Bicyclists run pedestrians off the sidewalks and trails. BADBADBAD...

The rest of us are scared for our everlovin' lives, as motorists don't see us/care about us...

They assert their protection under law, and yet obey none of the laws that apply to them. The only form of life lower is the lawyer

You should run for office. Not.

2004-02-09 1:33:50 PM
I love many of the bike riders in Mpls, especially the "Critical Mass" asshats. They whine about not being "respected" on the road, and then proceed to violate every traffic law, ride 3-4 abreast, ride through pedestrians on sidewalks, etc. Fark 'em.

2004-02-09 1:34:56 PM
Love the Headline...hehehe

2004-02-09 1:35:53 PM
I drive to work, I ride for fun. I can see this from both sides. Honestly, there are some cyclists that are idiots, but the drivers are usually the problem. They just don't look out for the cyclists. I can't count the number of times I've almost been run down by cars. The worst are cab drivers. I've put some huge dents in some cabs with my feet and fists as I go by those jack arses trying to turn while at a red light going through the pedestrians trying to cross at the croos walk. Damn cabbies.

2004-02-09 1:36:02 PM
A question for those of you complaining bikes "slow them down"; how much time (on an average day) do you spend stuck behind bikes and how much time do you spend stuck behind other cars? Think about it.

2004-02-09 1:38:59 PM
whidbey

You are right, of course. I left out the important modifier. Bad cyclists. Bad bad cyclists. They're just the ones that stick out in my memory - and therefore seem to comprise the largest percentage of cyclists on the road.

You're also right about me never running for office. I'm completely unfit for public office of any sort. Now if only the other dingleberries (don't you love that word) who are equally qualified would follow my example...

Here is my proposal:

In each metropolitan area the authorities issue one traffic defense license each day. The recipient is a randomly chosen commuter (vehicular or not). The license is good only for that day. The holder of the license has the right to shoot or ram any person who violates his right of way.

I've gotten stuck behind cars doing 10mph for no reason on an open road before, and I get just as pissed at them as the asshats who won't use the bike lane. Thank you, drive thru.

Bicycles are the FUTURE. Soon enough, you're going to see more paths on your "major highways." Squeaky wheel gets the grease...so to speak.
